A way to silence gestures

I know I'm not the only one with this in mind. You see it all over SL. People playing loud, annoying as hell gestures all the time. These gestures that play a full song, or some annoying quote over and over and over. I've even saw one that was an extremely loud airhorn that left almost everyone nearby deaf. I do DJing and have been to a few Slingo/DMC games that end up having people overuse gestures constantly. Yes, it may be a simple complaint, but I don't make a complaint without offering a solution.

My solution? Create an extra slider in the volume control section. Have the slider recognize when a sound is being played via gesture, so you can turn it down or off. I'm sure there has to be a way to recognize if the sound is character-played or object-played.

Anyone else with me on this? Or do I stand alone?

I think that muting the avatar mutes their gestures. Am I wrong? Have I just been lucky that every time I've muted the annoying avatar they've just decided to stop playing the gesture?

Something that flings the perpetrator 6 sims sideways would be perfect, I often think

Yeah, muting the avi normally works but for those of us that just don't want to hear gestures all the damn time, we'd have to mute almost everyone. It's sad. Even a few good friends spam gestures all the time. Hence why I was asking.

And yes, a gesture-flinger would be fun.

The solution of not hanging around people who spam gestures/sounds has always worked for me ;)

This suggestion was made on the Jira sometime ago and it's still open for voting. Goto jira.secondlife.com and search for VWR-2658

I have a dozen or so laugh, giggle, and greeting gestures. I use them to salt&pepper my chats with friends. And when it's time to be silly, "MikoMiko Nurse" MUST be played. (^_^)y

.... Call me annoying .... /giggle .... (^_^)

I "just" was at the Abyss buying hair and boots and there was an AV there bumping into people screaming "theyre coming to take me away haha hee hee ho ho haha".

This gesture was annoying back in 05 when i first heard it...oddly enough..it hasn't gotten any better.

Do the people who play these sounds over and over and over actually think its endearing?

..or is it part of their fun to know they're being annoying. I usually gladly oblige and call them an explitive in public.

~Lana Tomba

Just recently had a friend ask me not to even speak to him in local..when i asked if he was "shy" he replied"No..other people don't wanna hear our mess";((this was in a store on a shopping spree))

I was prepared to allow one exemption to my punititive measure, and you just took it :)

My beef is more to do with being in a club or wherever, and the chorus of cretinous howling and whooping overshadows the music to a ludicrous extent.

One of my faves (not) is "yyy spanked zzz" accompanied by a loud slapping sound. Why do I need to be informed of this? Can't these people play over IM, like the rest of us?

Most annoying are those things that create an image with characters over a dozen lines of text, spamming anything you're trying to read off your screen or chat window (which I keep as small as possible).

I lump all this in with blingy shoes: something the newbies have to get over eventually.

/me is cranky today

I don't mind the giggling or the greeting ones. Like a few others stated, when you're DJing and people keep WHOOP WHOOP!ing and howling, it gets crazy. And half the time I'm in places where I can't just turn down sound because I have to listen for other things going on (i.e. Slingo numbers rolling)

gestures in clubs are important and fun, people dancing in silence is creepy and boring, but gestures must be chosen and be funny or sexy or amusing, not ripetitive...

My solution was to stop going to the kinds of clubs where people who spam "woot woot" and "howlzzzz" all night long hang out.

witty, amusing conversation can take place surely? - silent dancing IS creepy, I agree.

People dancing with me get witty, amusing conversation. Or at least I think so. Or hope so. Or something.

Yuppers....precisely the reason I don't go to clubs in SL..... I just don't get the obsession with gestures and those annoying 'pictures' people clutter the chat area with. It's like partying with a bunch of 12yo's. I tend to like actual conversation. Oh well.

Exactly. Back when I used to frequent clubs the only ones I would hang out at were where there was a lot of amusing conversation. The ONLY reason to hang out at a club is for the amusing conversation, IMHO.

Amusing conversation and The Edge are two mutually exclusive items.

Have to give them credit for staying open so long, though.

For busy clubs they have to be one of the oldest.

I have no idea how the conversation is though -

At 1 frame per second I tend to want to leave quickly on the few times Ive been over the years.

just seeing them scroll up in chat is offensive enough. Especially the picture ones.
