Do you find that you are posting less and less because you just do not want folks to jump down your throat. Even when it is a thread in which you might know the answer or would like to share a similar situation to let the person know they are not alone...yet you hold back because you think maybe someone will twist your words, get all pissy at you etc.
Also... do you find you are different on the forums that you are in world?
Me I do refrain from posting and yes I am different here... I am more laid back in world (as some can easily vouch for heh)

From: Rhaorth Antonelli Do you find that you are posting less and less because you just do not want folks to jump down your throat. Hell no! To your other question, we are all a little different in different environments. The core is the same, but we act differently. So the answer is yes, and I'd be surprised if anybody here could honestly say "no".

Nah.
I believe in karma: What goes around, comes around. So when people come after me, I feel I have a duty to the Universe to return their karma to them. (Muhuhuhaha.)
Meaning, if they are sincere in their comment, even if they are as undiplomatic as I am, I treat them with the respect they deserve. OTOH, if they are flaming or trolling, well, then, I treat them with the respect they deserve. Try it, you'll like it.
(See, if someone tries to jump down your throat, they usually leave themselves in perfect position for disemboweling. ; ))

(edited to add: I agree with Love, in that there will be differences, merely due to the differing nature of the media...one can take their time on the forums, edit, add, delete...if they have the inclination. Like I did for this...wanted to add something according to the topic, which is so very off-character for me. Blaech!! Tastes like serious! Yuck! /wipes mouth on his paw...)

yes cause kindergarden has taken over
will be posting again when people grow up and stop posting this bs and tbh, this topic makes as much sense as the pie ones and pretty much pointless
can see why people refrain from posting change to lurking with the hopes some real questions get asked to answer on or just give up on RA completly

hmmmm
I hope no one thinks this is a troll poll post thingy
I really am questioning myself lately I knew I portray myself differently on the forums than I do in world in world I am more like the real life me when the real life me is having a grand ol time in the backyard with friends having a bbq and lounging by the pool...
the forum me is more like the at work in the office have to keep the profession air kinda me (which slips up from time to time)
The me today is kinda lost in the midst of it all
AND... totally unrelated but... I found out my PC has been ready since Tuesday but no one called me And when I tried to call they were out of the office AND I have no way to get the pc unless father in law can write me a check and we pay him back when hubby gets home but FIL is not around sooooo
I am a bit distracted!!!
(oh and FYI for those who knew I was having PC problems... it was my motherboard... it was toast, a wonder the pc was even running before it decided to not run)

No, I don't predicate what I say on whether or not someone will agree with it. They don't have to. They don't have to like it, or even care. Everyone is different, but you shouldn't let others dictate what you think or say. You can hold back because YOU feel it's inappropriate, insulting, silly, whatever. but don't do it just because you are afraid someone won't like it. Especially on a place like this, where everyone is just anonymous, and nothing any of us say here is really that important in the grand scheme of things.

I voted yes, but only in the sense that I've decided a couple of times, (mid-post) to delete my answer. Not because of any fear of being 'attacked', but more in the sense of self-control. Sometimes not answering is better, and less time consuming, than sharing the same views others have expressed already.
So I try to ask myself if my post will actually add anything new - if not, then meh...
If I really feel the need to write something, the only one who can stop me is (at the moment) Millie.

I'm the same on here as in-world. The clue is in the name - we have to use our SL names on here so that's why I'm on here rather than a spokesperson from my RL agency. I act more or less the same in-world as here - charming, bright, breezy, a bit of a show-off but not afraid to call a prim a prim!

I don't refrain. If I have something to say, I say it, if I don't, then I don't. Sometimes I post to be goofy, sometimes I don't. I do not ever post to intentionally harm anyone in any way, though I may post a disagreement, which is for sake of discussion not flaming.

hehe and you are right but I really do not like ppl jumping on me because I voice my opinion... No, but some will. And if you let them silence you, they win. When it happens, just consider the source. Sometimes, people can be critical in a constructive way, it isn't always meant to be vindictive. Consider it and if it is from someone whose opinions you respect, think about it. If not, just tell them FugQ.

I think you should act how you want and make YOU happy. Not everyone is going to like you and not everyone is going to answer in a respectful way. So stop worrying about pleasing them and please you.

can see why people refrain from posting change to lurking with the hopes some real questions get asked to answer on or just give up on RA completly In this case, I must respectfully demur. I think the OP raises a valid issue: I think a lot of people do hang back from posting because they fear criticism or attack, and I think we are probably the poorer for it. The ones who do venture to speak up often have intelligent and valuable things to say. I think it's also interesting and valid to explore the degree to which people do behave differently (or don't) in RL and SL and on the forums, and why. Probably is reflected in their behavior in SL as well as in these forums. Personally, I think us folks who don't mince words or suffer fools gladly (I think our hearts beat as one on that issue, Alicia), should remember that there are people out there who are sensitive plants, and need to be encouraged to dip a toe in the relative rough-and-tumble here. (I say relative, because it appears RA is almost like a Japanese tea ceremony compared to some of the other forums out there on the Internet.)

Believe it or not I hate it when I get slammed by people on these forums. And there are times when I have felt very beleaguered for sticking up for myself on these around here, But stepping back I think some of that is my own insecurities rather than how the people are. If 5 people are "ganging up on me" maybe they aren't really; thats only 5 out of a few hundred reading, right? Maybe its just coincidence they all disagree with me and choose to say so. So obviously I don't really post less, since I'm such a big mouth, LOL. I Just hope people can feel less inclined to fear the "jumping down of their throat"

I Just hope people can feel less inclined to fear the "jumping down of their throat" Gee, Colette, I never knew. I only very rarely come to your defense because you seem to deal with attackers so well and don't need it. But FWIW, at least 90% of the time, you are right on and I am cheering you. Don't let the bastards wear you down!

I am very different in the forums than in world. In world I tend to be silly and laugh alot (except when I'm building). In the forums I am serious and that's because I come here for different reasons. I come to the forums to help others and to learn myself. I've expressed my feelings on that many times before. I never worry about getting attacked for a post. As Brenda said, no one knows who I am so why the hell care. Some of the discussions here get pretty heated and that's not a bad thing, as long as people are respectful. Unfortunately too often that's not the case. If it's someone who regularly argues for the sake of arguing then I'll get bored with them eventually and put them on Ignore. My only other concern with posting is that I'm told I come across pretty harsh in some of my posts. Friends in RL and SL have expressed surprise at how testy I can be when posting, and say it doesn't match my normal good nature. I'm amazed that I don't see it sometimes, but take their word for it and strive to be better. Unlike what Brenda said. I think what I say is VERY important in the grand scheme of things.

The ones who do venture to speak up often have intelligent and valuable things to say. I agree that the OP raises a valid point. We can in no way know for sure how many people hang back for fear of criticism. I hope the numbers are few. I really think most who do 'lurk', do so because they are using 'search' to find their answers. After all, should we all change our manner of posting so that a few will be able to post in _their_ manner? There will always be those who are more gruff, but since they usually represent a minority in threads, I don't see how they are able to push away anyone one but the very, very shy. Why not just focus on the positive posts?
