I find the notecards and whatnot annoying and a bit of a distraction. It is not just the stores, clubs are really just as bad if not worse. A simple sign with an OPTION for the shopper to accept the note, lm join group or whatever else is enough for me. What I like to see is and this is pertains to the larger stores, more tleporters throughout the store. I find this most useful than a notecard telling me where to walk. The greeter bots that will not go away or they keep coming back the are an irritant as well. It reminds of something watching you to see if you are going to shoplift something.
Those are just my 2 cents on the subject.

I couldn't agree more on this one. I have been to big places that did not have this and needed it badly. It is way too easy to make a one-click teleporter to not have it.

Hate them! There is one place in particular that I occasionally visit that has welcome mats that you walk on and here comes the landmark, notecard and group join spam...triple whammy...and if that's not bad enough, the mats are placed in several places outside and inside of the store. Heaven forbid you miss one!
I'm currently working on opening my store and I'm watching the consensus on this thread. I want to know what works and what doesn't. I surely don't want to piss off the potential customer.

I'm annoyed by dialog boxes/landmark givers. I don't mind the object chat or IM, so long as it's not too long.

If a notecard/landmark is automatically dispensed to a visitor in an unsolicited fashion, it is spam, period. The store owner may feel it is necessary to convey important information to their customers - and it probably is - but the customer should always have the final decision. A simple kiosk will do. Click Here for an important informational notecard. Click here for a landmark. Maybe a very short llSay calling attention to the kiosk.
Personally, I've got better things to do than spend 5 minutes reading a 25 paragraph notecard about how to shop at a particular store. If your store requires that much instruction, it is too complicated to begin with.

The Shelter is a PG establishment that exists in a Mature sim. While we do have our rules clearly posted, we've had many folks complain "Why don't you give those out as a notecard - I never read the sign!". It feels like a catch-22. There doesn't seem a way to communicate house rules/information that is universally acceptable. Right now, only people under 20 days old get a notecard - although we've discussed giving it out to everyone *once*, to solve the problem of people not reading the rules sign. Based on this thread, I don't think we'll be changing anything Here's the way we work it: -If you're under 20 days old, you receive a chat greeting & a welcome notecard that explains how to get around the Shelter, and what the basic rules are, one-time-only. -If you're under 20 days old, but have already received the notecard, you just get the chat greeting: "Everyone give a warm welcome to Joe Newbie who is 1 day old!" -If you're over 20 days old, you just receive a chat greeting. "Welcome, John Oldbie!" -In either case, if you've already visited that day, you don't receive a greeting.

At least you have given it some thought and put in more than a little effort to make it less obtrusive.

Especially if you get a lot of newbies you need to be more aggressive in reaching out to help as they often don't know what to do or where to look.

I make sure i say in open chat that I am muting the greeter, so that Officers in the area are aware someone minds, and so newbies nearby can get the idea what to do.
