Never really thought about it before, but the login servers may be throttled back on purpose, to keep from overloading the asset servers when huge numbers of people login and demand inventory downloads... probably other shared services, too. Provisioning for such a spike in demand could take hundreds of times as much capacity for all the central services as would the highest steady-state load.
[Edit: finally got in-world, and noticed it took a *long* time for Voice Chat to connect. Maybe that's a clue which shared service is the bottleneck this time.]

From: Kevyn Hienke lol, actually I pay them to provide them to me, you seem to have it bass-ackwards.
Heaven forbid they anticipate this and actually prepare for it. But how dare we even mention that, eh? Well them I'm sure you have read the Terms of Service which fully cover planned outages. I'm logged in and had no issue logging in and others are on the same sim as me ... so restart your SL client maybe?

I'm getting the "Due to our best efforts, we made it so you can't login. Ha ha!" screen. It's just because 500,000 people are trying to log in at once. I'm just going to wait until later tonight so I can avoid getting irritated.

Not sure why everyone but me always has bad luck...
Restart your SL Client maybe...

Okay... logged in just fine, tried to buy some Lindens, got an error that they couldn't "authenticate" me... bought them through secondlife.com just fine, but found that I couldn't teleport without relogging.
...and now I can't seem to get back in.
*quirk brow*
Can't authenticate me? What in the world does that mean? O_O

13,650 Noobs can get on, But people (like me) who have been here for month's or maybe even a year or two or 3 or whatever can't. Pretty sad if you ask me. Those sitting at the login screen have a better chance of quitting and trying again.
What a load of elitist bullshit. Those "noobs" as you call them (newbs is probably a better term) have just as much right to be in SL as anyone else. Get over yourself.

And please forgive me for forgetting LL can do nothing wrong And yes, I missed the part of the ToS where I gave up the right to complain about their inability to load balance.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I've been playing SL for a couple years now and I don't expect better treatment just because of that.

Even WoW has a system to throttle log ins after an outage. This is very standard for the industry.

Correct, you we're not the only impatient one. The ToS should be read by all users. You might want to read over it one more time. And Throttling logins != Failure. I'd rather have them Throttle logins then increase SL costs because they have to buy extra authentication servers to keep up with load that only ever spikes up that high after and upgrade and even then is only for a short period effecting select users.

there is no need for us to disrespect each other by swearing. all of us have a right to say what we feel with respect, but we do not need to swear to get that point accross, because if hurts. i cannot login to secondlife aswell. i think it is not fair to not even be told about why. i think everyone should be able to get into secondlife, and i also feel like those who pay 10.00 us a month should be abale to, they pay for this. but you who do not deserve the right to get in as much as we do. and as i speak i have finaly logged in. why it only logged me in after an hour of waiting, only when i started to write this post, i am not too sure. but it makes me wonder if someone is somehow paying attention to all of this in the forums.\ well, all the best to you all. and i hope you all have a wonderfull day.

Because we should all design our systems to support 100x average load. So if you site runs OK on a Dual Core 2.4Ghz Computer, you better really run on a 100 Dual Core 2.4Ghz, because if you can't balance that load, you are a failure no matter how big the load is in comparison to average traffic... Right? I'm 100% sure they use load management, but I am also 100% sure they are not stupid enough to purchase unnecessary servers just to cope with infrequent upgrades that will be made even MORE infrequent thanks to todays update. From: Kevyn Hienke Yes, heaven forbid they have dual use servers that can be transfered over when needed. Ok, so you are off the Excess is good crowd. I'd prefer lower costs.

SL may Say they're online, but I started trying to log in when there were 53 people in SL this afternoon and I'm still trying. It's all well and good to say they're back up, but for me, they're still offline. It would seem that their maintenance could be completed during the wee hours, rather than when most of the Western Hemisphere is interested in being online {with no aspersions cast toward those in the Eastern Hemisphere.}

I couldn't get onto main grid or Beta so I spent the time sorting my SL photos and putting some on my Flikr pages.

You have to restart your client before you can TP or do anything again... An annoying bug that I first saw after they changed some of the messaging to TCP rather then just UDP.

Just too stupid to re-task other servers, eh? You know a certain load is coming, you don't have to buy 100x the capacity, it is stupid to even suggest such a thing. That is where "load management" comes in. When you know you are going to have a higher than average load in one aspect, you transfer other resources to that which are being unused in their other capacity. Thinking that load management only involves purchasing extra resources shows a lack of understanding as to what load management actually is.
