Gestures are good for helping me pick out people I need to mute.
As those folks are frequently also dripping with bling and various particle spam, it's really quite helpful for finding the lag culprits and getting them off my screen via 'mute'.

The worst offender, other than any version of the word HOWL, is an ASCII shape of a dog to go with it. Although possibly meant to impress people somehow, it serves only to spam actual conversation from my text window.

I rarely use them, I mostly dislike hearing them. I always considered gestures as mostly a kind of newbie right of passage thing. I prefer to emote though I do have a laugh I am fond of.

Oh shoo, you can use a group tag for that. Would not be surprised if such as group already exists even.

I think you should have gestures for more weasel dances though if you can. :D

I don't like gestures at clubs and events....I find them annoying. They often use loads of lines so they interrupt any chat that's going on, and the sounds that go with them just annoy me - especially when everything is quiet and all of a sudden some wierd howling comes from my speakers and gives me a heart attack.
But I do have a lot of gestures and tend to get into gesture wars with friends - we stand around playing loads of gestures over and over just for fun. Not to annoy anyone, just to collect them lol. Hard to choose my fave though....possibly the baywatch run - it has no sound or chat spam, just a really slow baywatch-style run that lasts forever.

I don't use gestures, except maybe the clapping one at events.

I have to admit though, the /boo one makes me laugh. It seems so heartfelt.

Not everyone has group tags on, and someone who can't be arsed reading what's in his chat window while he's talking to me is going to need audio reinforcement in any case.

sadly not everyone has sounds turned up (not voice, but sounds)
so even then a gesture might not work.

I tend to keep sounds down when out jumping around the grid, because of gesture spam more than anything.

Applause and Wave are the only two I seem to use regularly - even though I have made quite a lot of gestures. Point and Laugh I use occasionally, when needed.

gestures - and loving that song.....
05-25-2009 16:21
I know the original question was about favourite gestures - and sadly, my answer is none -hate the things!

Lemme, however, give you another perspective on the "I love this song - utterance" gesture, and its companions the full screen ASCI fingers, wolves, howls, whatever. As a working DJ, not only do I hate these things, but what actually do they signify? That you've been sufficiently moved by a song to extend a finger and press an F key? Wow - that's magnanimous of you - have you ever considered that a well phrased, typed, "Gee, that's a great song - thank you" would actually take more effort from you, and actually mean more to the person you're aiming it at?

And more to the point, what does the screenfull of ASCI characters actually tell anyone? Not so much that you're cool, but maybe more that you're insecure and threatened by the fact that, for whatever reason, you're currently not the centre of attention in the room - and you need to grab it back by drowning out any other form of communication or conversation?

I dunno, just venting - and I'm sure there'll be a flaming to come .....

I don't use them as a rule as so many people find them offensive and I know often DJ's are annoyed by them. But I actually like gestures and use a couple of them sparingly.

I like the "purrrrrrrrr" and "sexy rawr".

But my all time fav is the one that says, "Yay, Yay" twice in a very deadpan male voice and lifts your arms over your head. That just tickles me.
