Needs professional help

I need help of the highest kind.

I have no real SL skills.

I would like some suggestions, and some help, tips, pointers, ect. that can be givine, both here and in-world. I won't be in-world until around midnight SLT. I am interested and am willing to learn in a number of things. But I am clueless on how to get started.

So, if you wanna do something outside the Services sector, I think you actually kinda have to *make* stuff... like build, or animate, or script, or design texture, or somethin' "real" in a Manufacturing sector sorta way.

But if Services aren't out of the question, there's always Banking: the pay is good, there's a new customer born every minute, and I think there's a recent opening.

That is more what I'm looking for, but I havn't the faintest clue on how to get started!

The texturing tips forum has a lot of good pointers and stuff to help you get started with doing clothes and skins.

One place to get lessons in SL matters is NCI, the New Citizens Inc. group.

One way to find lessons is to use the Search button at the bottom of the SL interface. Then the Events tab. Then pick the education category.

Some folks learn to build by going to a sandbox and clicking build. Then they click and drag and such and pay attention to what happens when they do.

The forums here are full of years of posts with information on how to do things like build, texture. Look in the section called Content Creation.

There's a wiki with information in it. It has a "Creation Portal" in it now, at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Creation_Portal . That has info on various aspects of creating things in Second Life, and it has links to Torley's video tutorials.

The old scripting wiki at lslwiki.net has probably the best introductory information on getting started with scripting. Starting from the beginning there are reading all the introductory information would be a good way to get some idea of what's going on in scripting. One approach that works for some people is to use that wiki and the LL provided wiki along with a bunch of sample scripts. One starts by trying to make small modifications to short already existing scripts.

For some of us...there's just no substitute for heading to a sandbox, clicking "build" and fiddling around with stuff. Once you learn how to link prims...you're on your way.

Designing skins and clothes has more to do with your skill at photoshop than anything else.

And...be warned. If you plan on designing clothes or skins...or even building a decently textured object, you'll probably need to invest some cash. It'll cost you to upload your own textures - and invariably, for beginners, you'll make a few mistakes and end up with things that just don't "look right" in-world.

The best advice I can give is to be patient, don't be too hard on yourself, and more importantly try to have as much fun as possible.

SL can be an awfully depressing place once you start treating it like a job...instead of a hobby.

Search Events under education. Many free classes are available that start with the basics of learning the build window and how to use it, advanced building techniques, all the way up to scripting. The one school I am familiar with is College of Second Knowledge, but searching Events under education will help you find classes that occur on a timely basis for you.

If you want to do clothes/skins/etc you'll need a good graphics program. If you don't already have Photoshop or the like, I can recommend The Gimp, which is an open-source (aka free) program which I quite like. Your best bet is to go hit the Texturing forums down in Content Creation, where you can pick up kick-ass templates from Chip Midnight and Robin Sojourner (aka Robin Wood) and start from there. It's a looooooong process but totally worth it.

Here's what I did:

When I first arrived to SL I was stubborn and said I was "never" going to buy Lindens with my credit card. So, yes, I started as a stripper. The money was DAMN good and it was a lot of fun. In the meantime I took building classes at NCI and began building on my own.

What's up on now? I stopped being a stripper because the fun wore off and I got bored. I now work a couple of shifts weekly as an event host. I don't make much, but I have a helluva lot of fun. And yes, I now buy Lindens every month to pay my tier. How's my building? It's reached the level that I'm very proud of the work I do and I sell some things here and there. If I'd stop being so damn lazy and get some work done I'd have some good products on the market. Maybe someday.

The lesson: It just takes time and effort to build up your skills. There's no quick way to do it. Just keep creating whatever it is you want and your skills will get there. I you need money now there are ways to earn Lindens but without creative skills you'll be doing something you might consider mundane.
