You know, this is an interesting idea, because in the legal sense gambling on the beta grid should be fine. You never risk your real L$ balance, which will be restored the next time the beta grid is updated, and you have nothing to gain because your winnings can't be cashed out (and like losses, will be nullified with the beta grid update).

But for practical reasons, I expect LL will keep the no-gambling policy in place on the beta grid. If I understand correctly, the beta grid is not large, and is not able to handle anywhere near the numbers seen on the main grid. And although anyone is allowed there, its main purpose is for testing.

If gambling was officially allowed there and became popular, the beta grid could become so filled up with gamblers that the beta testers (trying to use the beta grid for its intended purpose) could be locked out. Suddenly LL has a secondary grid that generates no income and serves no useful purpose for them, and nowhere to conduct beta testing. So business-wise, I'm guessing LL is gonna say no to beta-grid gambling.

But it would stress test the grid. However, I would guess that most people that like to gamble like the thrill they get when they win. If there is no value, it isn't that big of a deal to win big. I don't think you will have the flocks of people even if it was allowed.

Considering how understressed the beta grid is, I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. One major point of the beta grid is to perform stress tests, so that issues that can only be seen in stress situations will be detected before they are rolled out to the main grid. At present, since the beta grid is almost never stressed, these issues never get seen, resulting in the wobbly main grid we have.

You say oh noes! stress on teh beta grid. I say, that's why it is there, to be stressed.

This may sound like a silly question, but how do you make money in the beta grid? I havent used it for a long time, but I thought the L$ balance reset to the default each time you logged in.

Probably a moot point anyway, since as LL releases the server code to allow them to do "Het Grid" testing on the main grid, the beta grid will be used less and less, and will eventually go away. They may still keep it for the most risky testing, but it won't get updated as often, I would imagine.

I've offered my honest assessment of whether LL would consider their gambling ban to cover the Beta grid. I believe that it does, and that t is very unwise to risk being banned from SL just so you can continue gambling in SL by doing it on the Beta Grid. If others here disagree, it is up to them to make that decision and take that risk of losing their accounts. In my opinion, LL would be well within their rights to ban anyone who insisted on running a lot of gambling devices in the Beta Grid.

Making money in Beta? Every time the beta grid is reloaded, all L$ balances are set to L$5000 more than what the avatar has in their main grid account at the time of the update image. So if a noob has L$0 in his main grid account, he can experiment on the beta grid, do tests of texture uploads, and the like, with a L$5000 balance to pay for that testing. If someone with L$100,000 in their main grid account went to the beta grid, they would have L$105,000 to play with. So lets say I go to the beta grid and give Joe Noob L$50,000. He can't transfer that to the main grid, and he can't keep it past the next beta grid upload. The balance will persist from one login to the next, but only until the next Beta Grid update. Next time they update the beta grid, he's back to L$5000. There is no reason for a merchant of any sort to set up a business on the Beta grid, other than to test a vending device to make sure it works right. Accumulating "riches" in Beta is as foolish as investing in sand castle real estate at low tide. It's certain to be wiped clean with the next tide.
