Trouble finding things in inventory

I think everyone has problems finding things in their inventory. It seems to me that there ought to be a better way for the whole thing to be organized without having to sit down for hours sorting it by hand and putting things into folders. Just the other day I sent an IM to one of my freinds and it went something like this:
Me: Hey there... what are you up to this morning?
Her: LOL out shopping for clothes, of course.
Me: Oh?
Her: Yes... I decided it's easier to buy something to wear rather than try to find something in my inventory.
Of course she was sort of joking.. but there was also some truth in what she was saying. It got me to thinking about the sorting tool. You can check off so that only clothes are displayed... but that includes everything... shirts, pants, socks, skins, shapes. Why couldn't they give us the option to see... say... pants only? Wouldn't that make it easier to find stuff when you are trying to put an outfit together? Certainly they are represented by different icons in the inventory window so wouldn't it be pretty simple to seperate them in the sorting tool?
So my question is... has this idea ever come up before? And also has it or should it be added to JIRA as a new feature request?
Thoughts?

there are filters in the inventory that will do this already.

Filters that will seperate...say.... just jackets? I thought you could only seperate "clothes".

omg i hope they never change it ..i am too used to the way it is..
really i don't think we could have a much better system with being able to create directories and sub directories and so on..i mean we can make them as deep or as shallow as we like just like our computers system..

i would hate to have less..

if i am organizing my inventory i open a second or sometimes a 3rd window and scroll to the area i want to pull from and drop over in the folders i want things in..it goes so much faster than scrolling in one window..

Well I would never advocate that we have less... just maybe better and more ways to find things. I

if you want to just seperate jackets here is what you do..make a new folder and name it jackets..then open another window up.
now you have two inventory windows open..in one type in the search JACKET
now all you have to do is drag them all.. the jackets that show up drag into the jacket folder in the other inventory window

I agree with the OP, I am frustrated by the same thing. Being able to narrow your inventory filter to specifics would be handy (i.e. shapes only, eyes only, pants only).

I bet there is a 3rd party viewer that does this. I'd have to check...

...except not every jacket has the keyword "jacket" in it's description. Additionally, if it's no copy then you remove the jacket from any previous "outfit" folder that it came in, effectively destroying certain coordinated outfits. On top of all that, it's a manual process and it's a pain in the ass to go through every single item type and do this. Plus you'd have to continue this maintenance routine everytime you buy something new.

I think the only real improvement would be implementing shortcuts for items, especially No Copy items. That way you could put a No Copy item in a folder, and ALSO have it in another Outfit folder.

The other problems are simply ones of organization, and individuals can take care of that themselves. My Clothing folder is highly subdivided, and I usually don't have much problem drilling down to find what I want.

Yeah... I get that some people spend a ton of time organizing their inventory by hand... but a lot of us don't. I know how to open extra windows and put things into folders... I just choose to spend my time doing other(more fun) things. I guess I'm advocating better tools for us lazy people.

lol
i don't know if there can be an easier system for an inventory..
i would say you have to file things when you get them..
i take a screen shot of every outfit i buy then place it in the folder with the outfit..but if you want to put all jacket layers in one folder and you see an outfit that you want to keep the jacket with just don't take it out is all..

you want to do all brand names then make a folder with the designers name..
you want favorite outfits then make one of those..
the options are endless..
i have over 35k in items which are 80% clothes and haven't destroyed anything yet..
it's a filing system is all and it's not gonna separate by jacket and object and gadget.. they get labeled on the item and then we sort them so our searches for them become easier..

i haven't heard of anything like that..and i don't think unless someone made a viewer that could do it..
mayeb there is something in world..i know they make trunks you can put a bunch of stuff in that may be what you want..but i think you have to drag and drop those..i'm not sure i never used those..

i found this in world..not sure if this is what you would be looking for or not but here is from the note card...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inventory Box
------------------------

Inventory can be a giant drag for those of us who are not the organized types. This box allows you to
pack your stuff away without having it clutter up you inventory. Items are easlily accessable with
scrolling. similar to a vendor, touching the box gives you a menu allowing to to take the item, the contents
and delete the item or the contents. There is nothing to do to configure it. Simple rez the box, right click
on it and choose Edit, go to the Content tab and drag things from your inventory into the Content pane
of the edit window.

You should also change the name of the box (the object) in the General tab to reflect to contents
of the box in your inventory. Here are the steps.

1. Rez the box
2. Right click anc choose "Edit"
3. On the "General" tab, change the name of the "Object" to reflect what you are putting in the box.
If you are filling it with T-Shirts for instance, call the Object "My T-Shirts"
4. Click on the "Content" tab.
5. Open you inventory and drag all your stuff, t-shirts in our example, into the content tab.
6. Close the "Edit" window.
7. Right click on the box anc choose "Take"

You will now find an object in your inventory called "My T-Shirts". To get stuff out of the box, follow
these steps.

1. Rez the box.
2. Scoll with the arrows on the box until the text above the box shows the item you are interested in.
3. Touch the box anywhere and a menu will show with the following options:
Give - this will give you the item showing in the text above the box
Give All - this will put everything in the box into a folder in you inventory, the same name as the box. *
Delete - this will delete the item showing from the box
Delete All - this will empty the box (there is no getting anythiing back if you do this!!)

* items that are not marked "copy" cannot be put into a folder in you inventory. this is a limitation/feature
of the SL scripting system. You can, however take those item from the box but it will move them from the box
and put them into inventory. Those items will no longer be in the box.

I don't think they do, but YOU can.

I started keeping different kinds of clothes in different folders right from the start. Organizing your inventory is the best thing you can do if you want to be able to find things.

what forced me to get organized real early was when ifirst got here and i saw so much free stuff..i was like ..omg a house..you mean i can just take this house??

then clothes and jewelry and everything..i was ..ok i'll just take everything and look at it later..
i played wow before coming here so it was like..omg unlimited inventory space wooo!!!
grab grab grab ..

then went to my inventory and saw two folders..my inventory and library..
i opend library and looked around a bit..then opened my inventory and was like
omg what am i gonna do with all this crap!!
it took me forever to get rid of it when it was mixed wit things i had bought..like a year before i got rid of all the free junk..

so from then on i made a system and stick to it like a fly to a bug strip..
i find the second i let it go things get sucked up and i could lose them forever...the only way i would find them is by stumbling on the or remembering i had bought them and go looking for them..
there is an art to speed and inventory..dancers i think have to really learn pretty fast because of all the changing they do..

No... really I was just looking to see if people felt the same way about inventory as I do, and if anyone thought it would be helpful/worthwhile to be able to filter by clothing type.
I do appreciate your time and input though. :)

Yes, I've never used the filter for just clothing or anything like that because what I wanted to filter for was just tops, or pants, or socks, or a specific! :) So yes, I would vote for a Jira for that.

btw, for anyone who is closer to starting out than having 20,000 items in their inventory, for outfits, you can shrink the SL window down to just frame you, and snapshot yourself wearing different outfits for an easy and faster reference to your "closet" (LOL, which is exactly what I call that folder on my computer). If you name those thumbnails on your computer to match the folders of your SL inventory, voilĂ , easy and quick way to find the name of the outfit you are picturing or see if mixing and matching separates might work as well as you imagine. ;)

Oh and I see Ceka's message, I would like to be able to filter by prim or coalesced prim! Why not? And used LMs versus never touched LMs?

Oh, oh, OH! And by creator!!! I would LOVE to be able to search/sort/filter/whatever by whomever created something.

to search by prims would be a nightmare..ever get a folder that has assorted sizes and things you can mix and match that are all prim? there are just too many prims of every type to really track..they would have to be labeled as clothes..but most are labeled as lower left leg or right forearm..you would have a huge filter list..

i think the trunks are neat if they could be incorporated to browse without having to drop them on the ground..
