Just a question you may liek to think of - and a nod to the Lindens and sl. What is YOUR most inspiring moment of 2008 in Secondlife? Added to taht, what is teh most inspiring moment of 2008 in Real life? SL: I really like the idea of the time capsule and found that "inspiring". RL: Seeing Barack Obama get elected. The first African-American president! I think this is WONDERFUL! But I would have voted Democrat whoever the candidate was as long as the name didn't end in Bush. lol I don't know if my rl part is really inspiring unless I put this way: "that it will open a lot of minds and inspire many blacks who feel oppressed to continue to inspire or aspire to their dreams and/or purpose in life". |

I really haven't spent a lot of time in SL this past year to be inspired by much.
In RL the continuing slide of our country into bankruptcy and socialism inspired me to leave my job in the public school system, and reassess my priorities, be that personal, political or financial. |

In SL: I would say Burning Life '08 was inspiring because I came out of reclusion and participated a little. I made some brilliant and inspiring acqauintances that way. This taught me that being inspired is up to me. Others are already doing their part.
In RL: On a grand scale I suppose the slight shift back toward the left in US politics is at least refreshing if not inspiring. Since my ideology is somehwere slightly to the left of Timothy Leary, I fear it will still be business as usual though. Only when thought police from either side are cured of their meddling affliction will I feel truly inspired. On a smaller more personal scale, my extremely high stress job that was probably killing me has been phased out, and the university I work for has generously found a more peaceful position for me, allowing me to actually finish some artwork after several years of creative block. I have also been using SL as a simple kind of 3d sketch pad to this end. Sorry. This was all probably TMI. |

I wanted to add to this thread, but I couldn't think of anything that inspired me. I'm sure there were many little bits of inspiration during the year but nothing that I could remember. Then I remembered something...
The cockup that LL made by deleting perfectly good MLP scripts, and the subsequent discussion in this form inspired me. I'd been using animations in my furniture that I found from the discussion were not supposed to be used, and that inspired me to make all my own animations, and that in turn inspired me to make significant modifications to the MLP scripts so that the system is capable of doing more than the normal MLP scripts are. It wasn't exactly a spiritual moment, but it was certainly an inspiration to make the animations and changes to the scripts - a big change for my store. _____________________

RL: My most inspiring moment(s) - LOTS of them - was watching my father valiantly fight and WIN stage 4 throat cancer! Thanksgiving and Christmas are a lot different this year than last year; thankfully so.

RL - working in the transitional care unit of a hospital during my clinicals. _____________________

Discovering the wonderfully creative people in SL.
It started for me this year with Jay Newt's "Brooklyn Is Watching" project, and the SL artists I've found there. Danoyote Antonelli, Dekka Raymaker, Ichibot Nishi, Arahan Cleavau, Selavy Oh... Marianne McCann and her wonderful SL photography deserve a shout out. The same goes for her enthusiasm for exploring SL. Torley IM'ing me about my Burning Life build. Just about everything Torley does is inspirational. Thanks for helping "amplify my awesome"! SL may be a virtual world "awash in sex and porn" (not that it's a bad thing) but it's also awash in remarkably creative and talented people. _____________________

SL: getting a new computer and monitor which allowed me to truly realize the wonders of SL - you have NO idea how difficult my SL was before LOL
RL - seeing Barack Obama elected. Whether I voted for him or not isn't the issue. The issue is Americans are finally getting past their prejudices. |

I have also been using SL as a simple kind of 3d sketch pad to this end. Sorry. This was all probably TMI. Your real life sounds a bit like mine. I am inspired though that my country has actually elected as president a person of color. Growing up as I did in the '50's, I had hardly dared hope I'd see it in my life time. Even if it does turn out to be business as usual, which I also fear, still I'm heartened to have a leader whose message is that we should have courage and work together instead of that we should fear and blame each other, give up our basic rights, and redistribute our wealth to war profiteers. At least its rhetoric that I like. In SL my biggest inspiration comes from the creativity of others and the opportunity to create myself. _____________________

In RL - The beginning of the end of capitalism. Yes, because longer life spans, personal freedom, and the commonplace items we use for daily life are so disheartening. _____________________

At least its rhetoric that I like. Never happen as long as anyone has collective power over anyone else. Didn't you find it refreshing and heartening that Obama's new chief of staff has actually written in favor of slavery as a program for the current government? _____________________

In SL, it was standing on the side of the road that traveled through 35 beautifully designed & built sims....being part of the bystanders that were watching & cheering as the cancer surviviors and caregivers (adults and children) walk the Survivior Relay for Life lap.
In RL...the day my best friend had her 1st year check after her fight with breast cancer ....and being told there was no sign the cancer has returned. |
