I met my wife on a BBS back when just having a 1200 baud modem was already uber-geeky, so my friends consider something like Second Life pretty mainstream compared to some of the things I've been into.

I have good reasons not to trust either.

I think that's because they have a better sense of it not being "real".

Maybe the most judgmental of SL are those who know nothing about it (either way).

Considering the amount of hearsay used to further “[Insert hot button item here] is supposed to be banned and I’m crusading to get rid of it!” agendas... I totally agree. (^_^)y

A similar thing was said by a 20-a-day smoker acquaintance of mine. Because spending real money on virtual things is "wasting it'" whereas burning £5 a day and inhaling it is "that's different, because it's something I enjoy". (Same thing goes for the boozers who piss away [literally!] in one weekend down the pub more than I spend in one month in SL.)

If I ever become a land baroness, I'll tell people, "I'm the Supreme Ruler of a small country on the Internet, and make a living by taxing my subjects."

That should serve to weed out all the people too boring to talk to.

I wish I could remember who it was so I could quote them... I've tried forum search, but it just hangs up on me - the post is probably two years old...

Shortly after I joined the forums, some people here were talking about content creation and sales in a virtual world, and somebody said, "Who knew there was money to be made selling things that don't exist to people who aren't there?"

That's an awesome description of content sales in SL, but it would probably get you some funny looks at a dinner party.

I say I create virtual art in a virtual world that I show at a virtual gallery that is connected to a real life gallery in Brooklyn NY, and that people visiting the gallery in RL can see my work on a 52" screen, once I visited the gallery and I had my photograph taken in front of the screen, on the screen in Second Life there was a real life photograph of me as a 5 year old that I used on an installation in the virtual world, after that they usually say "ohhh?"

Then I say, actually this coming Friday in another real life art gallery in NYC I have a piece that was first shown in Second Life and then was asked to reproduce it for real life, which also happens to be a photograph of me when I was 5 years old, but not the same one, it's a photograph of me and my father, the title of the piece, which is printed on the photograph is "Kitsch Father & Sons Competition – Butlins Holiday Camp 1963" and on the sign that I'm holding, which originally said 83 I have changed it to say 'masturbator', then they usually say "ohhh nice".

Then I say this is a true story, isn't that amazing?
