From: Blog Profile and Group Temporary Changes 1:00 PM PST Sunday, April 6th, 2008 at 9:40 AM by: Kate Linden As part of a plan to increase overall stability of the grid today during peak usage hours, our operations team will make some changes at 1:00pm SLT that will reduce overall database load and create a more reliable experience for everyone. As a side effect of these temporary changes, some group and avatar profile services will not be available.
Specifically:
* Avatar profile information will not be trasmitted to the viewer. This affects both floating and embedded profile windows.
* General group information (name, charter, etc.) will not display in floating or group embedded group info windows.
* Groups will not show their member lists.
* Group owners and officers will not be able to eject group members.
* Group proposals will open the UI, but will fail to create.
* About Land will show 0 for traffic.
Please note that all of these effects are temporary and will return to normal behavior when we re-enable these services at approximately 4:30pm SLT. At that time you should either relog or run Client -> Clear Group Cache (a Debug option) in order to refresh group behavior. We will update this blog post to indicate when these services have actually been disabled, and again when they are again re-enabled.
Over the next week or two, we will be making some changes to the database cluster that we believe will significantly reduce the effects of peak loading that many of you have experienced over the past several weeks. The mitigating measure we’re taking above is something we will only use until those permanent changes are in place.
Thanks for your patience. .

I think they'll have to totally redo how groups are handled to fix that particular problem, and that of course includes group IM's.

It's a bit concerning that a basic functionality such as group operations is being pinpointed. This platform is held back by group restrictions already.

This reminds of having to turn off the air conditioning in the car so it doesn't overheat in the desert. SL keeps clunking along, but this jalopy ain't gonna take us all the way to the Promised Land.

Depressing. It's LL's alternative to throttling logins. Back in the "Load testing done, profiles and such still not working" thread: From: Sling Trebuchet Eh. It was an "unload" test.
Things were getting borky. So they thought " I wonder if it will be less borky if we turn off profiles and group stuff for 30 minutes".
If that worked helped, then expect to see Profiles and Group functions turned off at peak times. Next to be turned off at peak times will be ........ .... some or all of Search?
..... or a very throttled search... ? So for now, Groups and Friends are going to be turned off at peak times. It's pretty certain that without a considerable beefing up of servers and bandwidth, the next things are going to be Search and Map. Question: When is Peak Time not Peak Time? Answer: When it is no longer Peak Time, because people stay out. That's a brilliantly short-sighted solution to the issue.

Last week when they did this, I was in for a bit. Person-to-person IMs did not work across sim boundaries, and therefore were more-or-less useless. Hard to tell whether that was an effect of these restrictions, or just some random borkitude.
Group IMs WERE working, tho. Odd. Just odd. .

That's a brilliantly short-sighted solution to the issue. Map already comes up as gray squares at least 50% of the time so they don't have far to go with turning that off anyway.

Between 11:39 and 11:54 I have watched one of my friends on my friends list go on and offline 12 times....that's six crashes.
My partner can't stay online either. He's crashed 4 times in a mere 15 minutes. He has a nice machine. With 3GB's of ram and an excellent graphic's card. He's actually talking about going out today to buy a new graphic's card. He's lowered all his settings but still crashes.
How am I managing to stay online? I've tp'd around a few sims and stayed with no problem other than lag...but for now I'm sitting on a mushroom in my yard doing nothing.

It's actually a lot more like driving through death valley CA, on the hottest day of the year, and being forced to turn your HEATER on full blast to try and keep the engine from overheating.

From: Sling Trebuchet So for now, Groups and Friends are going to be turned off at peak times. We started having problems inworld again at roughly 11:00 SLT, so I would say that they haven't even fully defined Peak/Problem times.

It's the sheer blatant dishonest of them that gets me.
"As a side effect of these temporary changes, some group and avatar profile services will not be available."
Yes. Wonderful! A "side effect" of turning things off is that they get turned off.

From: Sling Trebuchet I wonder if they will end them later than originally expected? That is a given - what is questionable is whether or not it would be intended.

CAN'T LOAD PROFILES CAN'T IM CUSTOMERS CAN'T DROP NOTECARDS ON RETAILERS CAN'T MANUALLY DELIVER ITEMS
I was willing to put up with it when it was "just the group stuff".. but this will functionally halt all customer service for the next 5 hours.
THIS. IS. UNACCEPTABLE.

This is horrible. We can not open profis to drop things from ava to ava. So if an item now is not delivered when someone buys it we can't even send it to them manually without having to go stand right beside them and dropping it ont heir ava. The abilty to see profis is core to the ability to communicate, and that is what people are in here for in the first place..to communicate with one another. Peak times are when options like this are used and needed most. It is obviopus people making decisions like this are not in SL using it day to day hour to hour like the rest of us. It is bad enough when "unexpected" (how a steady increase of assests and users stressing an already stressed system is unexpected is anyones guess, sounds more like poor planning) problems cripple the grid and make a poor user experiance for new and old residents alike, but to plan to cut major functions during peak times is beyond belief. At a time when you have the most sets of customer eyes on your product, you disable it's functions? The profile thing really hurts the way I use SL badly, the groups do not effect me much really, but I do wonder what a groupowner is to to do about a disgruntled renter running around and autoreturning other group members objects at free will for hours.

THIS. IS. UNACCEPTABLE. Yes. When they disable profiles, they disable being able to do anything for someone who is not on your friends list. Aka, customers. Meanwhile, there are 63,370 people online atm. .

I guess LL just expects you all to treat your customers the same as LL treats their customers. *shrugs*
