OK, back to animations again.

I've noticed that my walk and turn animations sometimes become jerky after I have used furniture poseballs in stores, or been somewhere which alters the camera view.

It's happened again and I've tired logging in and out, but it makes no difference.

The last time this happened, I had to redo the whole AO. Is there a simpler solution? And apart from not using strange poseballs, what can be done to prevent this happening in future?

Go to World/Stop animating my avatar. That might help, especially if the system still thinks the poseball animation is still running.

SL is buggy at times,no need to redo aos, most likely last time the glitch stop by the time you got done playing with your ao.
Sl is far from perfect ,I have days I fight with taking images for boxes as my av is twitching and thrashing around .
All you can do it wait it out,it will stop.

It can happen when you get off a poseball in an unusual way. For instance, buying the one you're on can cause it. If I'm not mistaken, flitting from one to another, without getting off the first one before getting on the next one, can also cause it. Getting back on a poseball and then standing up normally fixes that. Of course, your difficulties could be for other reasons.

I didn't do either of those. Just stood up in the usual manner (by which I mean clicking the blue button near the bottom of the screen).

It's puzzling. I've got to the stage now where I hesitate over trying pose balls and such at all.

Try a spot of oil on those joints of yours. But I also found that that jumping up and down as if your about to fly also helps.

Update on the update: switched to a copy of the same AO with the same walk - result, problem cured.

So what the heck has gone wrong with the first AO?

OK; scratch that. It's doing the same jerkyness with the AO copies too :(

If you have not tried clearing the cache try nuking it. People have had problems with clearing the cache and not all the files being dumped.

Look in the network tab in your preferences and note the location of your cache (Ctrl-C to copy to clipboard.) After closing SL goto that folder and delete it. When SL starts back up it will rewrite the folder and make a new cache.

I didn't know about this. Are we supposed to clear this periodically?

Many problems can be cured by clearing the cache and relogging. In rare instances some files will not be deleted when the cache is cleared. I would not recommend deleting that folder on a regular basis but clearing the cache when experiencing problems is a good idea.

I think that the posts recommending to wait it out might be the only way to go :-(

Kay, there are several permutations inworld of the "Stops All Animations" object. It has a script in it that really does stop all animations, and works a lot better than that viewer command that's supposed to do that. You should be able to find one free someplace, but if not, drop me a line inworld and I can send you one. You just rez it and then click on it, though my partner says if she wears it, she can click on it and it works.

The viewer cache is not very large (1GB max, of which 800MB is useable), and prone to errors. So two things can happen. First, if you visit several places, or use new animations, it can push old stuff out of cache. If the old item is actually old and uncommon, it may be in back storage in the inventory servers, and take some time to get fetched and reloaded.

Second, the cache index or the actual content can get borked by memory errors, dropped packets, etc. This is why clearing cache works, it forces it to be reloaded fresh. The downside of that is you cannot selectively clear a broken item or category, it's all or nothing.

So the recommended solutions are to try the animation for several minutes, especially at busy times of day or in a busy sim, to give it time to get fetched, and if that does not work, then clear cache.

Maxing out your cache size (to 1GB), will store more data, and lessen how often stuff gets pushed out. That's still pretty small, but its better than the 500MB default size.

OK, will leave it alone unless necessary. I did take the precaution of keeping a copy of the old one before removing it.

What I did notice is that it took a long time to log in after deleting the cache; took ages for things to rez properly, especially the textures of objects I'd made myself. Does that mean the cache contains information like that? Or was that a coincidence?

How do I do this? Is it in the preferences panel of the viewer itself, or do I have to tell the computer to assign more memory to the viewer?

That is exactly what it is.

Think of it as your attache case carrying all the information about your avatar and the world of SL that you have experienced. As you fill it up it becomes a mess and disorganized. Eventually it is full and to put a new item in you must first remove an older item. If you come across the need for one of the items that you trashed you must acquire a new copy of that item.

When you clear or delete your cache you're throwing away the baby with the bath water. To get rid of the few borked files you must throw away all the good ones with them. When you relog your attache case is empty and it takes time for SL to fill it back up with the required information. Hopefully all the new copies are in good repair but corrupted and lost packets can break them, that does not happen often because there are constant data checks going on when you're downloading content.

When you first open SL before you log in look at the top of the screen and click on Edit > preferences > network tab

You'll see a slider that says cache size... slide it to the highest setting. If you experience more problems after that try a mid range setting.

If your internet connection is fast enough slide the 'maximum bandwidth' slider higher too. That will speed up your rez times.

Sadly, none of the stop-animating scripts have helped. :( So I guess it's just a matter of waiting it out. Can't think of anything else to try. Sigh.

SL has been very "flaky" the last days. It totally destroyed a pair of scripted shoes, because the lag caused the resizer to run again and again in a loop. I got a new pair from the designer, but then the HUD wouldn't work.

I know I don't have the best software or the best internet connection, but I hear many say the same. I lag much more than I ever did, causing my avatar to move "jerky" before the AO starts and I walk with the AO walk. I think it's just to wait it out and see.

The strange thing is that SL was very laggy and working bad before Xmas in 2007 and 2008 too, and after Xmas I thought it was working better. LL staff too busy preparing for Xmas?
