as a realitive noob (6months or so in SL)
I’d be interested in what decisions LL have made in the past to cause such mistrust among residents. With the disharmony the recent decision on OS has caused, I have read many comments about how LL has cultivated mistrust amongst its customers.
Out of interest can anyone tell me what the history is?
Thanks

The short answer is: every decision since beta. Not everyone reacts the same way, there's a whole lot of us who just shrug, deal with it, and go merrily about our SL.

Ageplay, Gambling, Banking, IDV, VAT, Adfarms.....In all cases these were things the residents were complaining about for a lonfg time, yet LL did nothing abou them...until it was a problem for them, mostly legal in nature Then they would put out a bunch of incomprehensible, sometimes contradictory announcements, followed by half baked ill conceived fixes that would usually create more turmoil for the people not involved in the illegal activity. The famous "Broadly Offensive" caper, where they told us it was our job to look out for offensive material and activity, and squeal on each other, yet wouldn't tell us exactly what "Broadly Offensive " meant. They are the ones I recall since I showed up.

Being a 50 year old man, I was bitterly disappointed that they banned bare nipples at SLB5, how's a man going to get his fun these days if they do things like that?

There was the time that Jill Linden and Panthar Orlowski stole my land, leaving a void in the terrain.
I dreamed that though.
Hmm, let's see, the giant sun annoyed me. The change from smoky semi-transparent unloaded textures to opaque gray unloaded textures displeased me and continues to displease me every time I go anywhere in SL.
Every time I buy something in SL they decrease my balance. I don't like that one bit.
The decision to make your avatar do a 180 every time you enter appearance drives me mad. That decision I guess goes back to the first appearance of the appearance editor, whenever that might have been.
I do think there was one major change that didn't get met with mass whining, the addition of custom gestures. I recall people generally being happy about that. I do seem to remember some comments about the loss of the good old days of doing the F12 dance.

Being a newbie and lost in beta and totally confused....What sent me packing for 3 years was the prim tax. Also I didn't get at first the concept of charging money for Lindens. I thought it was totally weird and sort made me feel not mad but uncomfortable at first. I don't know if their was much uproar about it back then because I never talked to any other Resident except twice in my first year in 2003 and only briefly found forum then promptly forgot where to find it. LOL

There have been many decisions that have come from Linden Lab that stir up anger and distrust. I would have to say for me, the banking ban is the biggest one. The reason for this is as follows:
Since the inception of SL, Linden Lab has always stated and still to this date states a no interference policy with resident vs. resident disputes as seen here: _________________________________________ I have an agreement with one or more Residents regarding real estate, group management, performance of services, division of revenue, etc., but they aren't keeping to the agreement.
Linden Lab cannot verify, enforce, certify, examine, uphold, or adjudicate any oath, contract, deal, bargain, or agreement made by the Residents of Second Life. Please contact the Resident with whom you have a dispute, and request that they make good on the deal. While you may have a valid agreement with another person, Linden Lab is not a party to and cannot resolve your dispute. _________________________________________ Now they turn around and blatently reverse this decision when it comes to in-world banks due to...you guessed it, resident vs resident disputes. The decision was not made due to a legality matter as some would have you think when they posted thier many thoughts on it. It is spelled out right in the very wording of the new policy itself: _________________________________________ As of January 22, 2008, it is prohibited to offer interest or any direct return on an investment (whether in L$ or other currency) from any object, such as an ATM, located in Second Life, without proof of an applicable government registration statement or financial institution charter. We’re implementing this policy after reviewing Resident complaints, banking activities, and the law, and we’re doing it to protect our Residents and the integrity of our economy.
Since the collapse of Ginko Financial in August 2007, Linden Lab has received complaints about several inworld “banks” defaulting on their promises. These banks often promise unusually high rates of L$ return, reaching 20, 40, or even 60 percent annualized.
Usually, we don’t step in the middle of Resident-to-Resident conduct – letting Residents decide how to act, live, or play in Second Life, but these “banks” have brought unique and substantial risks to Second Life, and we feel it’s our duty to step in. Offering unsustainably high interest rates, they are in most cases doomed to collapse – leaving upset depositors with nothing to show for their investments. As these activities grow, they become more likely to lead to destabilization of the virtual economy. At least as important, the legal and regulatory framework of these non-chartered, unregistered banks is unclear, i.e., what their duties are when they offer “interest” or “investments.” _________________________________________ Some will say "Oh well this is just Linden Lab defending the residents" but here is the issue. The residents knew what they were getting into and Linden Lab had a clear cut policy set in place to not get involved in such matters but then chose to break that policy. A policy that really is the basis of this project of thiers. The initial project was to create a platform and allow the residents to create what they would from it without manipulating it, but here they go, reversing that and breaking many residents' trust.

So they basically have never given a damn about their customers. I'm amazed SL has lasted as long as it has.........how much longer I wonder, don't think I'll be sticking around after July.

The end of stipends for basic accounts caused a stink, but back then you had to pay a one time fee for a basic account. The end of the "first land" program upset many as well.
