Best to go to small bars/clubs that cater to members of a particular group. I had the same problem as you until I met a DJ who does small gigs. We have a fun time discussing each song she plays and the memories associated with the song and the artist.

IM me inworld and I'll introduce you to these groups.

It's true, and i keep a list of about ten good clubs with on a notecard that I hand out to new residents who ask me about music. You'll find an average of 15 people talking about music, what it's like in their time zone, the news, and just joking around about daily life. For the most part, these DJs work hard on their sets to make them interesting, play eclectic music, and NEVER beg for tips. Just send me an IM if you'd like a copy of the notecard :)

I didn't think about pubs. I will check some out. Come to think of it now, I suppose live music venues would be a bit more social and laid back as well. Thanks.

In my vast experience in live music venues: The artist and the audience can and do on occasion interact (with the singer talking over the stream, and the audience typing back), and some singers noted that that instant back and forth is one of the reasons they like performing in SL.

Moving past artist-audience interaction and to audience-audience interaction - it has been my experience that, with some exception, most of the interaction is still hooing and the like (or the "tip the venue; hello person that just arrived" etc.). Which will get them an instant muting by me (those hooing, not the host/ess, unless they are hooing, which some do). I'm there to hear music, not have that drowned out by hooing. There are occasions when audience-audience interaction occurs, just depends on audience, venue, and musician.

I've been finding it very easy to find genuinely friendly crowds on estate kink sims. (^_^)

Though... It's been more difficult to take forum-friendly pictures in those places. (._.)

"estate kink sims"?

Just curious, what is the thing about tipping DJ's, seen it a couple places now on this forum. A DJ working their butt off SHOULD be getting tips, yes? I admit I DO beg for tips for my DJ, but he's a great DJ, so in case someone forgets, I mention it occasionally, remember to tip the awesome DJ. Usually after saying that, a flurry of tips will go out, so it can't be all bad. (/me smiles at my awesome DJ-of-choice, RockandRoll Michigan) Well heck, I didn't know it was a bad thing, tip reminders. :o

I mentioned tip rquests in my post as an example of the only thing said, not as an example of a bad thing to say. I mean, that was my intention.

Unrelated: I hate Vista. Company just updated all of us to Vista, despite it not being the new OS from Microsoft. It is so slow. And by slow, I mean, it has taken me an hour to write just this post here. doing nothing else (I joke, it only feels that way)

Ok; I was just curious if people thought it was a bad thing to ask for tips for your DJ, or for the DJ to ask for them for that matter.

It is only bad if it is the only thing said. And/or if it is something said every *insert an amount of time here, depending on the crowd* minutes.

It is somewhat off-putting if it is mentioned constantly. Also, those tipjars that annouce in chat someone tipped (name and tip amount included), and those tipjars that include last tipped amount and name in hovertext over them are also off-putting.

Non mainland places... Normally BDSM themed. They're typically much friendlier than they appear on the surface. (^_^)y

I go to those types of sims on occasion. Mostly as a cat. Most times they ignore or want to pet the cat. I have to be careful, though. If I find myself in a sim with a rather well hung horse or dog on display, I immediately attempt to teleport out. Fearing that they will want to use a cat in their activities.

I would like to clarify that when I said "pet the cat" I meant um . . like . . normal petting. Rubbing of hand on head type petting. Not the image that might come to mind if you were told (the plural you), "the two teenagers were found in a shaking car with steamed windows. When they were caught, some heavy petting had been going on"

Well, as a DJ, I can tell you that i do work my ass off with hours researching new music, and crafting sets particular to the venue I'm playing - so yes, we totally deserve tips. Fortunately, most people realize that it's good manners to tip the dj if they can afford it. And the messages that pop up in chat saying "Thank you [insert name] for your generous tip" acts both as a reminder for the busy dj to thank the person tipping, and also for the crowd to consider tipping. In a smaller club, it's doesn't come up enough to be considered spam, and it eliminates the need for a host or manager to ask for tips. Low key is nice - though there is nothing wrong with a manager giving a dj a shout out near the end of a set :) I worked in a club where i had a host once, and it embarrassed me to death when he shouted 'show some Linden love' - lol.

Muffled shouts are heard from a figure in the background, apparently duct-taped to a wooden chair . . .

I tried to eat the shiny tape, which would have freed you, but I got distracted by a catnip mousie. Sorry.

I don't understand clubs in game. There is so much more potential in Second Life.. but people insist on building more and more dance clubs.. so that people can stand AFK on a dance poseball or makeout with their virtual girlfriends while they make annoying noises and spam the chat like this is some kind of 3D AOL chatroom from 1996, lol. I understand the music, I love music.. but I haven't listened to the radio in years because the majority of what is played I just don't enjoy anymore.

I recently came back and found some pretty interesting events in game. Wrestling, MMA, Boxing, Hockey, Comedy Clubs, Karaoke, Churches, Counseling, Discussion meetings, Astrology classes, Buddhist temples, Art Galleries, Language classes, and FPS sims. Yet it seems like in between each one of these places is a club.

I just don't get it. lol

I find the clubs pay me enough and I would be too embarrassed to ask for tips. They are just some nice icing on the cake.

As for how hard I work? I don't. I find it amusing and I just get some music here and there. I have very few songs that were made recently and I don't hammer peoples' heads with the same over played top 20 songs. Above the tips, I appreciate a good turn out more, especially if the prize on the contest board is small or there is no prize at all.

Sometimes I will take people from Beethoven, through Ace of Base, Skunk Anansie and other all the way to Godsmack and Slipknot. (Such thing as too ecclesiastic?)

I quickly learned though that unless you speak in gestures, you really cannot carry much of a conversation in many of them. There are usually people who do not say anything except "HOOoooOOOooo!!!" 10 times in a row

Which is why I quit going to clubs.

There are other ways to meet people, anyway. Try joining the Forum Cartel group.

This video contains content from Current TV LLC, who has decided to block it in your country.

Oh but I am getting old. Laughing that hard gave me a coughing fit. Sometimes my fingers type similar words that my brain did not command them to do (usually shorter ones, lazy union.)

The answer to both your and my questions as they stand is "yes."

Let it be known that most clubs do not pay their djs - some people assume this is the case, but it is not. In fact, some clubs take a percentage of the dj's tips.

Most djs i know are passionate about sharing good music, and their hard work shows in the quality of their sets. People who really love music will recognize this. If you like the music, it's a lovely gesture to give a tip.

However, if you don't have the money, don't let that stop you from going - I had a loyal listener who didn't have money in sl and tipped me with desserts - lol. It's just nice to have people show up to have a listen and a chat. Just say 'thank you' - that goes a long way :)

If you're after good music, skip the generic clubs that hold contests or use sploders to draw people in - this is where you'll likely find chat spammed with gestures, and music is not the focus.

I can give you a list of ten or so clubs where the builds are quirky and fun, and the djs play eclectic music ranging from indie and alternative to electronic, motown, mod, punk, garage, french 60s pop, trip hop, crooners, or 80s - sometimes in one set - lol. Believe me, a good club experience definitely out there. The end. :)

I really landed in the butter then. I seldom get tipped much. I have to work two gigs to afford my stream each week. I feel guilty about the one place, it is so small and I often just do my shift to an empty room.

Erm ... I do get music for people ... and people enjoy it because I play what I like listening to instead of the same ("old" / new) tired songs. I don't work hard at it at all. This week I saw someone with a group tag that said, "^No Limits^" that reminded me of a song and I went on a spree getting a bunch of songs off that one.

I only started DJing because I have the technical know how on doing it and they couldn't find anyone to cover a shift.
