FINALLY! I'm cleaning out my inventory. It'd be nice if there was a search for duplicates function built into it. Since there is not, I'm hoping for suggestions or tools out there that I'm unaware of.
Skeptical but keeping my fingers crossed.

I don't know if there is any tools or not, but I don't think so unless someone else mentions it.
I think what a lot of people do do is to have 2 AV's and transfer one lots of inventory to the other then back again. Or alternatively open up 2 inventory's on your screen and create new folders in one and transfer to the other. As for duplicates, if the originals are in their own folder, duplicates will appear under the objects folder unless you have right clicked the item after being rezzed and selected open and then copied to inventory, then that will be a duplicate folder or another folder depending on the name of the object you copied from.. |

I completely forgot about being able to open two inventories at once. Hoping for more but it's definitely a start. Thank you!

Bradley, Larrie's suggestion of opening a window to get a second inventory for moving stuff is essential for good housekeeping.
Whilst there isn't a direct method for detecting duplicates you do have a filter. Open filter, select none, then select a type of object you want to check out will give you an easier view of contents, across folders. Additionally, you can start typing a name in the text box at the top of your inventory to further filter specific names. _____________________

I clean my inventory the way Bilbo does it. This technique also works for duplicate landmarks and textures, too (which is where I have the biggest problem of duplication).

How does one go about opening up a second inventory window? I've been trying to manage my inventory using just one-and it's a headache and totally confusing at best when sorting through the mess (I'm only a 2-month-old noob!)

This might be obvious, excuse me if it is, but you can have as many windows open at once as you like, I often have 3 or 4 open when I'm organising (which of course is nowhere near often enough).
Re: the duplicate thing, I have one window open showing whatever folder I'm clearing out, another window to search for things named the same as the item in question, and a third window open with the target folder in it - wherever I'm putting the stuff I'm sorting out. That way I always have the source and destination folders open and don't have to find them again every time I use search. |

How Many Items
09-05-2007 06:03
Just a thought, at what stage do people start emptying or reorganising their inventories.
Does it go by amount of Inventory items or just that the inventory is a mess and unorganised. I have about 10,000 items but have always kept it organised and deleted neccessary folder and files when necessary, its only the freeby stuff and things I have collected along the way that I have no idea about, collect so much stuff I got lost in it and just left it there. Also, how many items can we have, is there a maximum? |

No max .. that I know of Larrie!
BUT .... since inventory is loaded at login it does make a certain amount of economical sense to keep inventory trimmed. It was proven recently when someone created an alt with startup inventory, they logged a lot quicker ![]() And no particular trigger point for sorting .. if it's a mess it'll take you longer to find those shoes to go with that outfit ![]() _____________________

Set the inventory to list in alphabetical order, not the default date - that way you can see all the 'Objects' together - that is my personal bugbear - thousands of anonymous items named 'Object'

Find Shoes, I haven't changed mine since I left Help Island in Feb. Phew! Your feet must smell by now ![]() If you have some land - somewhere you can rez a prim - you can make a store of all or some of your inventory content. Just rez a prim, then edit it and drag items from your inventory into the content tab. You can then delete the items from your inventory. I did that beause I didn't have time to sort out my messy inventory and needed a clear out. Don't know if I shall ever go back to sort it out properly though - but at least I have the option. You could be better organised than I am and store things in properly labelled and described boxes. _____________________

Phew! Your feet must smell by now ![]() Funny that, I went back to my inventory and just got a complete change of clothes, what was funny, I had pants on that I didn't even know about, and yes before you comment Deira, I have deleted the pants! You could be better organised than I am and store things in properly labelled and described boxes. You could use your inventory like a cupboard in your kitchen except we don't have tupperware boxes to store things.......... |

It got to the point I stopped checking them and just deleted them. |

Just a thought, at what stage do people start emptying or reorganising their inventories. I'd always kept mine very organized but in the past month my RL has been in disarray and my SL inventory shows it. I'm sure someone could do a psychological study on that. My decision was based on having too many items that weren't organized in folders; having too many items in one folder making it a pain in the arse when moving items; and finally I knew I had way too many duplicates. I am now just below 9,000 items which is a dramatic reduction for me. |

There is a link on the log in page for organizing your inventory, but never used it. Don't know if it has any special clues in there or not. I put mine in catagory folders, Shoes, Formals, Swimwear, poseballs, Xciting Items. Try to put a LM in there so I dont forget where I bought it and of course the name of the creator.
Now if someone would tell me how to make recents something other than three months worth of recents, I would greatly appreciate it. I have more than 19,000 items and sorting them even by search can be a real trial. Sometimes after a hard long day of shopping I even forget what I have purchased, so I go to my account and look at my Linden transfers. |

I try to stay on it constantly. If I acquire something, I immediately put it where it belongs. If I am building, rezzing or editing a copyable item, I make sure I don't have a ton of useless copies from every time I've picked it up. I don't have anywhere near as many items as most people, but it would be out of control very fast if I didn't stay right on it. The only thing I have trouble with is clothes. I've tried organizing them into outfits, organizing them by type, etc. How I managed to acquire all those clothes is beyond me.

How I managed to acquire all those clothes is beyond me. Maybe deep down inside you're a woman at heart. Seriously though, I spent 2 hours yesterday sorting inventory. I managed to delete over a thousand items and chuck a bunch of furniture at a yard sale. I've found that if I don't spent a few minutes every day organizing, my inventory becomes a holy disaster in a really short time. _____________________

Maybe deep down inside you're a woman at heart. I checked, but it's hard to tell; deep down inside it's really dark. I did find the turkey sandwich I had for lunch, a giant ball of gum and a penny I lost when I was 7, but no indication that I'm actually female. Until someone proves otherwise by performing a complete autopsy and actually looking deep down inside with some better lighting (I'm in no real rush for this to happen), I'm going to remain male. _____________________
