Is this sort of behavior common in groups around here?

Ok, so earlier today while browsing a variety of topics using the SL client search feature, I found a group listing that caught my interest.

Group: Group Name
Group Icon(23 members)
Charter: For those interested in xxx Language

Structured lessons for the learning of the xxx language. Stage by stage learning for correct speech done in cognitive fashion by an RL trained teacher.

Lessons are done on site here at xxx.

Beginner, Intermediate level only. Advanced lessons are taught only on a one to one basis.

Lesson schedules are send by group notice, students are expected to attend as often as they can.

Open Enrollment
Founder: Mr. xxx

So, I joined the group and read the notices. The first notice was telling people "come to the class now," then the second one was asking people to tell him in advance if they would not be able to attend the class. There wasn't any sort of specific schedule that I could discern from the ad or the notices and figured that I would wait for the next notice to come out. To my understanding, lurking for a short period after joining any sort of group is acceptable behavior so that you see what goes on in the group and don't do anything to disrupt the existing harmony.

So, just a bit ago I get an IM from the group leader. The log is below.

[16:18] xxx: You have been ejected from 'xxx' by xxx.
[16:18] Piri Latte: I see...well, thank you for the notification at least.
[16:19] xxx: there were two notifications over the last two weeks.
[16:19] Piri Latte: I only just joined today, but thank you.
[16:19] xxx: how about announcing yourself.
[16:20] Piri Latte: do forgive me, I'm a bit new at this.
[16:20] xxx: how about reading the advert you just read.
[16:20] xxx: and maybe realize that there was a class earlier today
[16:20] xxx: if you cant take this seriously, you should not attend.
[16:20] Piri Latte: I'm sorry to make you upset, and am unsure as to what you are referring to.
[16:20] xxx: you joined the group how exactly?
[16:21] Piri Latte: The two notifications that I had read were dated from the fifth and the seventh if I recall correctly.
[16:21] xxx: well done.
[16:21] Piri Latte: I had browsed the search feature included in the SL client, and took interest in the listing.
[16:21] xxx: yep,
[16:21] xxx: did you notice that the classes are mondays and wednesdays and fridays?
[16:22] Piri Latte: no, I hadn't seen anything of the sort.
[16:22] Piri Latte: because I had read that you would be announcing the classes, I was waiting to see that
[16:22] xxx: so, as i said, you havent read the add.
[16:22] Piri Latte: my apologies for misunderstanding.
[16:22] Piri Latte: i won't waste anymore of your time. thank you for the information.
[16:22] Piri Latte: good luck with your classes.
[16:22] xxx: go away.
[16:23] Piri Latte: I'm very sorry, but I've been nothing but polite to you.
[16:23] Piri Latte: I'm not sure what exactly I've done to cause you to be so rude, but I'm finished now, so I bid you good night and good luck. Thanks again.
[16:23] xxx: go away i said.

Am I to expect this sort of behavior from fellow residents? I created my SL account on Dec. 4th and have joined exactly two groups (both today) and this was one of them. I'm rather afraid to try joining any other language learning groups for fear of this happening again.

(and yes, the group name and instructor's name have been removed as I am only using it as an example and not as a direct personal attack.)

No, that sounds like a group run by a... well, I will restrain myself. Certainly that is not common behaviour; in any world that is rude and unhelpful.

No, it's not usual behavior. This xxx guy seems to think that he is the king of his castle in the group, and therefore will set the rules as he sees fit. Nevermind that other people are on different time schedules...or even possibly real lives to attend to. Seems to me he is acting as if he is a hardnosed university professor...that can't hold a real job, so spends his time in SL.

My opinion: blow him off and move on. Not worth your time or effort.

No it is not typical in my experience. But it happens on occasion. I am sorry this happened to you. Don't let it get to you as that is what they wanted. Most folks in SL are generally pleasant and I find most groups started for the purpose of mutual learning and sharing of info are very lovely and full of people willing to teach and learn. Chalk it up to a bad experience.

Hey on the first day of SL for a close friend of mine - she went to the loo for a moment only to return to have a naked man with rather large bright pink appendage humping her leg. It took much coaxing down from the drapes on my part to get her to believe that all of SL wasn't like that. So at least this troll didn't hump your leg!

Cheers

That's not typical group leader behavior. The person appears to be socially retarded. I'd ignore it and move on.

No, not typical at all. SL has about the same incidence of asshats as RL does. Anonymity magnifies both flaws and gracious behavior equally.

Oh, and Welcome to SL!!

Just like in Real Life, there are wonderful, fun, friendly, helpful people and there are rude, manipulative, unpleasant people in SL. The nicest bunch of people I ever found hang out at the forum cartel club house. You are most welcome to drop by anytime.

I think it's a shame you had to experience this, however I feel you conducted yourself rather well despite it. There are a few rotten apples in the bunch out there is about the only way I can say it. Not everyone you encounter will be this brash, so please don't let it put you "off".

In my first few months of existence I was involved in an RP group and there was one member of said group that had it in for me. Went as far as to accuse me of violating TOS for passing around a notecard of a private conversation, something I never did. Which turned out someone used a spy script to lift the info. Regardless, I left the group, as his attitude and the fun of what was that RP died horribly.

I've also encountered my fair share of sour vendors, patrons, and customers. If anything, learn from it, laugh at it, and move on. Learning from my own negative experiences in world, has helped me respond more positively to those around me. As I wouldn't want them to have to feel the way I felt back then.

Not everyone is the mean , rude or just plain well...........but there are those that have groups thinking they are well.......a bit of advice if he as dum as we think. His classes offered might not be worth the time. I hope he not charging. Becuae there are some running languge classes and are doing it "Half Backwards";( whats the term ). Too many people just need to learn manners on sl. But sad facts are they don`t have any in Real Life, and they bring their problems to SL as well. "Anyways Welcome to Second Life" :)

Thank you everyone for your comments. It's nice to hear that this is not typical behavior! For now I'll just hold off on joining any kind of language learning group. There's plenty of people who speak that language in game, so I'll just have to overcome my fear of sounding like an idiot trying to converse with them. ^^;

Thanks ^_^

Hi again Piri. If you are looking for a fun social group you might see about joining "The Forum Cartel." You can find it in search. It is a group populated largely by readers of this forum and there is a cool hang out in world now too. Not a language group, but a really fun crowd and very friendly. :)

Wow Piri!! where do newcomers find these people? I've been here a year and nothing but polite, courteous people (except for the busy or AFK) and great fun. Hmm already too late to second the cartel group. First drink at the bar a double, on the house ... just as soon as Chris renews my membership .... yep, stoopid hobbit culling his groups last night knocked out the wrong one! ;)

No I don't think that is the least bit typical! I've never come across anything so bizarre in a supposedly serious study group. I'd have had a lot of fun with this guy!

"how about reading the advert you just read." ---- wonderfull!!! - and he is obviously in a state of confusion about proper nouns and the rules on capitalisation in English. Not a good way to present yourself as a language teacher - IMO.
