How many peeping Toms are there in SL?

Couple days ago I was inside my house trying out different outfits. Started getting IMs from someone commenting on my "great breasts!" I asked him who the hell he was and how he could see me and he said he had some kind of X-ray device and was just looking around--"by the way, you're hot!" Uh, yeah. That's a great way to get on my good side.

Let see, let me count really quick.. There are 6.4 million peeping toms, and thats not including their alts.

But really, it kinds of cracks me up, now that I'm thinking about my escapade last week. I mean, when you think about it, it's pretty much like these guys (I'll assume it's guys) are peeping on paper dolls that move for the most part. Sad...

He doesn't need a device to see inside your house. All anyone has to do is disable camera restraints and they can cam around anywhere they want to. That's why I get a giggle out of all the silly ban lines...if someone really wants to see inside, they are going to do it.

Yeah the X-ray device, meaning the camera tools that every avatar has in front of them.

I'm guessing that there are 3 "X-ray" user types: 1) Those who use them, 2) Those who don't know how to use them, and 3) Those who lie and say they don't use them. Sorry to those who really honestly don't use them. I'll *try* to believe you.

I had written a thread "I have a Peeper" - I was in a Changing Room, trying on a lot of outfits and quite naked for a long time, and some guy was in there hidden in a corner, with his, well, you know what out, watching me for who knows how long. I didn't have the mini-map on, I had never used that before (now I do) and I was too busy doing what I was doing to notice he'd TP'd into the sim (which is 2 small rooms) - plus, he'd turned off his "name" so nothing was over his head even. It wasn't until I happened to move my camera control around that I noticed him crouched down on a couch, staring at me. I got out of there pronto!

Do like I do. Start up your most suggestive dance ani and stroll on up close........do that for about 30 seconds and then inform him how much of a tip you expect!!! Then after you either get or don't get your tip TP home........or if already at home, do the "freeze, eject, ban" trick.

That there was some classic SL forums drama that stands the test of time. Change the names and it would be like it was written today!

What a creep. I was building something on my land the other day and got curious about a static avatar nearby, when I enabled 'client > character > show look at', and could see their pink camera was anchored to my build right next to my camera. It spooked me out a bit I got over it. If they'd have said something that would've been quite different.

Anyway, the person who did this to you just disabled camera constraints and panned into your home. Some people think camera distance is still limited even when constraints are disabled, but the trick is to anchor (alt+click ) the camera to an object.. and when it won't move any further, anchor it to another object, and so on, piggybacking your way across the land.

I believe the max draw distance is around 500 meters. So that’s how far away he could have been.

Not much you can do really. But you should be able to view his/her profile from the IM box...............you can mute and ban him/her from there.

But, basically, I wouldn't let any freak spoil my fun............I'd play along for a bit and then tell in polite and plain words that I'm pretty experienced with the AR system.

Though nothing like that has happened to me with someone camming in and IMing me.........I think I could handle it. I've had to deal with guys peeking under my skirts in clubs and IMing me about what they enjoyed or thought they'd like to do.......AR's are so easy under those circumstances.

Yes if it were me in the same situation as the OP, the IM's frm the peeper would be more likely to say "perv!" and, quite ironically, i'd be the one to be a likely subject of an AR, instead. I honestly don't care what they see, as long as they don't AR me for what they went out of their way to see, behind walls, on my land. That offends me.
Don't get me wrong; this has not happened to me. But it is something I consider every time i try on clothes in my home. For me, the stakes go WAY beyond embarrassment or annoyance or whatever the OP felt at the time it was happening to her.

Under Client, go to Character, where there is a menu includingShow Look At. Turn on the latter and you will see a 3D cross-hair at any point where a camera focus point exists. If there are more of these in a room than there are avatars, you know someone is spying from outside. You won't know who, unfortunately, but you will know you are being observed and can take measures accordingly.

I have a JIRA proposal - VWR-1807 - that would allow you to click on the cross-hair and get a standard avatar pie chart that would let you identify the Peeping Tom, and I suggest you vote for and help promote it. I think unwarranted invasion of privacy ought to be an ARable offense, and identifying the invader is an essential first step.

What kind of creep would peep on someone who looked awful and then IM that. Instead of "Great Breasts". You get, "Good God! Those are awful! Cover up before I vomit. Geez you're FAT! I can't believe I'm peeping on you. AHHH! Not the pants! at least tuck that saggy mess into some underwear!"

hmmm. Where's Collette? She should tap into the market for awful shapes, so when you have a peeper, you can instantly turn into Roseanne Barr or someone's sloppy old grandma.
