I have a notecard giver script in the vendors at my place. You click on the vendor.. get a notecard. Then you click somewhere else to buy.... you get the drift. Over the last week, I've noticed a serious slump in sales. Serious as in dropping from 2 houses a day on average, to nil. It started seriously bothering me. I started scrutinizing each detail of each house. Wonder what exactly could people have found defective today that they hadn't a week ago. Not finding anything too terrible, I lowered all my prices. Gave it a few days. That didn't work. Advertised an event. 50% off... that should sell something right? Nope. Not a thing. yet my traffic skyrocketed! I jumped to 6k visitors from my norm of 1500. Nothing. I'd hang out and watch people. They'd click the sign, read a notecard (or so I thought) and walk away to the next. I must have watched this for a solid hour. Click... move on.. .click.. move on. I even had a discussion with a guy who wanted a house that was mod. Told him I dont sell them with mod perms normally. I'd change anything he liked, or sell him at a higher price a mod one. He laughed and walked on... Eventually, some kind soul walked up to me. Told me she loved my houses and liked one in particular... She clicked for the notecard and instead of the notecard... she got the house. So there's my stoopid script f'up for the day. Someone please make me feel better and tell me something you've done lately that made you wanna sign up for special ed. (and no.. miss kind soul never paid me for the house)

Pro-bono work can be a great thing. It bolsters sales in the long run...chin up.

The good news is that you don't have to do much of anything to get sales to go up! And, I agree with Mr. Bigwig ... it seeds the market for your houses.

Think of all the traffic you'll get this week now that word has gotten around about the great free houses you offer! Funny story. It sounds like you are able to see the humor in it. I refer to moments like these as a case of the 24 hour Alzheimer's bug.

From: Michael Bigwig Pro-bono work can be a great thing. It bolsters sales in the long run...chin up. We have a phrase in the industry I work in in RL: "involuntary pro bono". It's where you expect to be paid and provide all the work and service, but for reasons beyond your control, it all ends up being free. I've done a pretty impressive amount of it from time to time. Losses are part of business. You try to avoid them, but things happen. Stand tough. A lot of the people who took houses would probably not have bought them anyway, so you didn't lose anything other than your normal business. You can recover.

I got all set up at a new vendor stall almost a month ago. I picked a nice area, high traffic with shoppers etc etc etc. Spent half an hour or so setting up the stall and at the very end I linked it all so I could take a copy of the mini build because I was quite happy with it.
Seconds later I get D/C'd.
My husband calls from across the house and reminds me that I was going to start dinner before I got caught up so I shut down and went to cook dinner with the mental note that all I needed to do was wait for the crowds tof all in love with my work. It'd be great.
I was highly dissapointed when I went back 2 weeks later (at the end of my rental) without a single sale. Why? Oh Why? I didn't think it was *that* bad of work.... I decided to lower the prices and see if I could scare up rent for one more week.... so I went to change the price and I realized....
My entire mini shop was still linked and not for sale.
Go me.

Go me. I've had this one happen to me a lot! Drives me crazy, since I could swear I had unlinked some vendors after adjusting the whole section... and they aren't. I simply chalk it up to a shrug and go on. I've had items just randomly change their perms so they had to become freebies. I've run the gamut of idiocy, which is a part of my life

Not many threads in the forum make me gasp...but this one did. WOW, I am so glad you found out about that. That is a good reason to get an alt to test those things out! Great to hear you got it figured out!!

I feel your pain. A couple weeks ago i put up my new 550L collar on the OnRez.com site, it was late and I had spent all day finishing it up. Well, next morning I was quite astonished to find I had sold 37 over the course of the night. But my initial joy turned to anguish when I realized they sold for 0L. :\ I had forgotten to change the price.

Sorry it took so long for someone to alert you. But more of your product out there on the grid can't be a bad thing.

When I encounter things like this i ALWAYS IM the owner and let them know, too bad more people don`t do that. Maybe one reason people *dont* is because they think they will be asked to pay for the product or return it. I think if someone is decent enough to IM the owner of their mistake the owner should not ask for anything in return....................................... Was the house copy/no trans? normally prefabs are. In which case she could not give it back to you and she only pressed for a note card, it might be she could not afford or had not decided if wanted the house or not, so you cannot expect her to pay for it when it was kinda pushed on her.
I agree with the above poster that if someone helps you out like that, they should not feel the need to pay for your mistake, it would prevent them helping in the future.
I think a lot of us have made similar mistakes, I once put the wrong thing in a box and someone told me, I gave them the correct one and said they could keep the one they had got because of the inconvenience and as a thanks for telling me.
Another time I put 2 of an item in a box because of really long delay in the item showing up in the boxes contents(you know when you drag an item to contents and it can take ages to appear, you wonder if you didnt infact do it so you drag again). I was very grateful when someone told me, its also very nice to know that there are people like this around, when you see scams and griefing going on so much these days it reaffirms your faith in people I think.

It goes the other way, too.

I remember once I was in a shop, and the owner had a necklace set for "20" instead of "200". I noticed it and IMd her, "Hi i was at your shop and <item name> was set for $20 and the rest were $200, just thought i`d let you know " The response was something like "Well i guess you got a discount then". No "Thank you" or anything, I cant help but think her response was said in a snotty tone. *Shrug* I didnt even buy the necklace either.

You clearly lost a lot of money, but became famous, even if for the wrong reasons. I looked at all the posts to see how many people that made a entry error when selling land... I did read one post whereby some poor sole entered 10.000L$ instead of 10000.00L$ and poof the land was swallowed by a bot for 10L$ OUCH.
Now we are all 'coming out', I did something similar, selling a product which was priced at 600L$, only to discover later that I'd set the contents to copy/trans/mod... I wondered why I only sold a few... I still shudder that somewhere in SL, someone is potentially making a fortune selling copies of my original.
My lesson was to get an alt and check it. I'm so paranoid, I run my alt from my other PC at the sametime, so I am 'there' to make sure (I still make my alt give the item back to me with no refund DOH LOL).

Jeez...enough to make you go OCD about selling stuff.
Now, I know that I sell things, because it either says it via dialog box, or it's listed on transaction history...but some of my stuff doesn't sell...I'm wondering if they are setup wrong...
Ah well...I'll give them all a once over.
Some of your stories are pretty crazy...just remember, sometimes freebies are a great booster for sales in the long run.

I feel for you! When I first started listing things on SLexchange, I left some items at L$0. Funny how fast they were selling LOL!
Here's another stoopid story: This guy buys one of my pools. He calls me to help him set it up a little while later. I tp over and start helping him. Something was wrong with the pool, can't remember what now. After spending 15-20 minutes trying to help the guy, I realised that this wasn't my pool! He had acquired another pool somewhere...that looked very much like mine (love them copycats ;p), except that that copied pool had an issue. And I never thought to look at the creator! Oh well, joke's on me LOL!

Oh man - I was just out house-shopping - wish I would have stopped by your place. I would have paid you anyway - I can't stand taking advantage of a situation like that. I'm the one in the checkout line at the grocery store that hands money back to the cashier when they make an error in counting change.
