Only one time I felt like chucking it all and abandoning SL- fortunately my neighbor at the time helped me to see reason. Been almost two years and I'm still here. Since the only way to quit RL is rather definite, I apply the same logic t SL... leave it be and it will clear it self. I know, sound rather Polyana - but I'm a glass half full sort. As for RL sucking at times- yeah honey, I'm sorry it does, and sadly we can't just log of for awhile or come back in an alt. Can't really give you much insight on how to deal with the downers there either- cause then I just hide in SL til I feel better. But- I will remind you about that line in Crocodile Dundee, when he is explaining that where he lived they didn't need a shrink- you just told a mate, and they would tell another, and before you knew every one knew and problem was over. 'Course, friends really shouldn't blab- but maybe sharing your burden with close peeps is enough to at least make it clearer for you. I find if I tell friends at times the bad stuff too, it helps me deal - then again, there are those that will tell you I talk too much as it is Good luck Rha

But I knew if I was able to log in, I would sneak in and never get away totally , which was what I needed at the time. Now, I wouldn't need that drastic a method I think, I've pretty much have a different perspective so that if it isn't fun, I'm not on.

But I knew if I was able to log in, I would sneak in and never get away totally , which was what I needed at the time. Now, I wouldn't need that drastic a method I think, I've pretty much have a different perspective so that if it isn't fun, I'm not on. Yes, I would love to get away for a while. But that's not a luxury I have. With a business the size it is, I have to be on to handle business, every day. With SL being as it is, I can't rely on anything working as it should, and I owe my customers my attention to the issues SL brings. But I try to keep in mind the words of the great Robert A. Heinlein: From: someone Do not confuse "duty" with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible. It is easier to deal with a footpad than it is with the leech who wants "just a few minutes of your time, please — this won't take long." Time is your total capital, and the minutes of your life are painfully few. If you allow yourself to fall into the vice of agreeing to such requests, they quickly snowball to the point where these parasites will use up 100 percent of your time — and squawk for more! So learn to say No — and to be rude about it when necessary. Otherwise you will not have time to carry out your duty, or to do your own work, and certainly no time for love and happiness. The termites will nibble away your life and leave none of it for you. (This rule does not mean that you must not do a favor for a friend, or even a stranger. But let the choice be yours. Don't do it because it is "expected" of you.)

From: Rhaorth Antonelli If only my childhood was as described in my OP
Maybe I long and desire for something I never had....and never will have
I dunno
sorry I started this thread, I just...
nm Sweetie, NOBODY had a childhood like that. Moments, yes. But have you ever noticed how often kids you see are unhappy? Crying, even? A child's disappointments and fears and misery may seem small to you and me...but to a kid, they are just as huge and awful as our grownup Bad Things are to us. Having said that, take your stress break any way you like...by being a kid again, by retail therapy, by retreating from SL and RL with a good book, or listening to lovely music, or whatever. For me, the solution generally involves chocolate.

SL is all about fun for me, and it's rarely let me down.
As for that rosy-colored lens view of childhood, it made me laugh. I wasn't exactly miserable as a child, but for the most part I didn't find other children very interesting and I couldn't wait to gain some control over my life. Childhood was something I had to wade through to get to the good stuff.
Adulthood feels really, really good. And that's said from the vantage point of my 50s.

Well I would hate to think that folks had a childhood like mine That would rip me apart, no one should ever have to endure what I went through as a child, no one!

From: Brenda Connolly SL is entertainmnet for me. If I am not enjoying it, I go do something else. Nothing to get stressed about. I am the same, though often I have passed the point of being stressed and into really (dis-)stressed before I recognise it. I am waiting for the day the "Meh" factor just washes over me and I don't really feel the stress any more - I would suspect it is really a myth but I have met surfers like this so I know it exists.

My approach is to move from adolescence to senility missing out on maturity. It's more a matter of determination than fortitude, I should say. EDIT- Chocolate is essential to ths process in my case.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli When SL gets tough and things get touchy, how many of you just want to toss in the towel and say the heck with it all? When you have those days, how do you manage to get back on track?
This is how I do it... (sure does drive it home as to why folks love to be a kid in SL)
(oldie but a goodie) RESIGNATION
I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year-old again.
I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant.
I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.
I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them.
I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day.
I want to return to a time when life was simple; When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care.
All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset.
I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good.
I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again.
I want to live simple again. I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.
I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.
So . . . here's my checkbook and my car-keys, my credit card bills and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, cause........ ......"Tag! You're it." Reminds me of an Evanescence song that is near and dear to my heart when I look at the world around me. "Imaginary" seems to come to mind, but often my head is swimming with goth music so hard to be sure.

When you have those days, how do you manage to get back on track? Go shopping with my girl, curl up on fresh laundry with my kitty friend, go dancing with my club owning friend, talk shop and brainstorm with my building and scripting friends, vent with my other friends, roleplay with distant friends, turn into a kid and go play on the swings (funny I do that IRL, well the swings part... mentally I never grew up) and if all that fails I buy a nice small plot build myself a little fortress, way up in the sky, and annilhilate anything (or anyone) that comes near....

Before my Mom's passing she used to ask me when I was down and stressed...."Are you going to let things conquer you, or are you going to conquer things?" She also told me that you do have complete control over how you think and feel........no matter what faces you in life. You can choose to face them in fear or can face them with courage. It works........it's not easy, but it works. And I know you are not the fearful type. God, I miss my Mom. Good luck Rha.

I want to draw a big circle in the dirt and play marbles again. Oh wait, I can, the marbles don't know I am not 8.
I am sorry for what you are going through. I get those feelings too, the last few months of my life have been hell on wheels. After I decide to finally crawl out of bed, I try and find something to laugh about. Like the time my daughter and I went fishing and couldnt find water. That's harder then heck to do when you live in Oregon, but we did it. No water. Then there was the time we went mushroom hunting. I came back with an empty sack and hers was full to the brim. Too bad she forgot to take the price tag off before she showed them to me.
Regardless of how bad things are for us now, we can still laugh until we cry. I love it.
