From: Abba Thiebaud That, frankly, is a matter of opinion, and therefore *could* be considered trolling. I'm not saying it is, but it could be. I personally don't agree with Broccoli, but I thought that first post by Broccoli was very well put, intelligent, and not attacking at all.
You forget for a moment, despite all the events scheduled, despite all the sales going on, and despite all the hype regarding Halloween, it's been scheduled for Wednesday, October 31, 2007 forever. And you also forget for a moment that LL has (for the last year that I've been a resi anyway) ALWAYS had Wednesdays set aside as a down day. Regardless of what Wednesday, there's always been a chance that your particular Wednesday may be the "one" LL chooses to use for down time. Those who schedule events on St. George's day are free to learn from this thread.
Given the above two facts, planners (good ones anyways) would have thought this far in advance and realized, "Hey, I should probably schedule this for after 12:00 pm SL time."
Excellent summary, thankyou. Another thing to remember is that whilst many people will want to celebrate halloween on the actual day (Wednesday) ... it's not always possible, and it's often the "nearest convenient Saturday" that people schedule for parties to any events. Certainly here in the UK anyway, I know lots of people do 4th July in the US on 'the day' but then again it's a national holiday for most so they can do that. Most people will be working on the 31st, I assume, unless they somehow can prove it's a "religious holiday" for their particular faith and get an exemption to have it as a day off (or take it as holiday). From: Dekka Raymaker Have you taken your meds today? I live in London UK, and I would be scared sh*tless to live where you do, you seem to know a lot of people who have terror struck into their hearts by various events you have an opinion on. Brixton Hill, not far off the South Circular if that makes any difference to you. Lovely place, shooting up the road just last week in Streatham. From: Dekka Raymaker It does effect people and LL should be made aware of that by any means necessary But why make an exception for this Wednesday. What about people who might have had things scheduled for Thursday that suddenly find their event screwed because LL change maintenance? As previously posted, people have known this was a wednesday for a long, long time. "By any means necessary", yes, make your opinion known. There's several threads here, and the blog. That's our avenues. Support is for help requests, not for complaining. Abuse of the support system can, and should, result in disciplinary action being taken against your account. Broccoli

"Maintenance will be over by 10am PST, 1pm EST, 6pm GMT - which leaves PLENTY of the day for those who wish to celebrate something."
Ignoring people in Japan, and all points east of evidently all-important US/Europe time... and that's assuming we don't have the fixit downtime, rolling restarts, cascading outages, etc., that many of these "upgrades" bring about. If that happens, it will be smack in the middle of our celebrations. Granted, you'll be home peering out the windows, muttering grumpily about those darn whippersnappers while other people are having fun, but hey, you enjoy our Hallmark Halloween the way you like, Ebeneezer.

This thread has been amusing.
Did someone put a razor in your candy as a kid, Broc?
Yeah, updates are planned for Weds. But LL has postponed updates before.
Regardless of your personal feelings about any major holiday, PLANNING downtime on a holiday is stupid. Especially in a social environment based on commerce.
I agree that flooding the support channels with "YOU GUYS ARE STUPID" isn't likely to make anyone at LL any smarter.
But it IS stupid.

I love how people's time zone chart seems to end somewhere the channel
11am PDT:
London: 7pm Paris: 8pm Moscow: 10pm Jerusalem: 8pm Turkey: 9pm
(oddities due to nations not having DST)
In, say, Tokyo, this outage will run from 10pm-3am. If someone would like to go tell the Japanese that it doesn't matter because they don't celebrate Halloween anyway, feel free. I think you'll find they differ. I've found some lovely Japanese Halloween avatars this week.
Planning an outage on a massively celebrated holiday just so that it squeaks in for the US and UK, while screwing most points east is an ethnocentric slight of equally massive proportions. Fuddy duddies not withstanding, most of us don't delight in the upsetting of holiday events, even if they are what some dour folks characterize as "hallmark holidays".
Why LL would be so crass when they claim to be so sensitive to cultural concerns, I have no idea.

From: Vye Graves Why LL would be so crass when they claim to be so sensitive to cultural concerns, I have no idea. Halloween has absolutely nothing to do with culture, or race for that matter (might as well chuck sexuality in whilst I'm at it). It's not discrimination, it's not insensitive, it's simply putting business needs above its customers, something the majority of companies do the majority of the time. Broccoli

Holidays... have nothing to do with... culture... mmmmkay.
In this case, though, you're right. Some people of all cultures will be celebrating Halloween in some way or another in SL, that is, those who are fortunate enough to live in time zones that exist in your and LL's mental image of the world.
Your argument continually is that this will be over in plenty of time for Halloween parties, so it is moot. I show you that in Japan, this is smack dab in the middle of those "night" hours you claim one is only allowed to have Halloween celebrations. Your response? Halloween has nothing to do with cultures.
So, doll, it's obvious your in "say the opposite more derisively" mode. Why bother? As you've said over and over, Halloween means nothing to you, so I guess you're just here to salt other people's wounds?

Ok so I have a question here.
Who will be attending real life halloween parties on Wednesday? Or will you simply have something on Saturday because it's more convenient?
If the latter ... why not do that in SL?
If the former... then you'll be at a real party and not a virtual one.
Problem solved.

Yes, definitely in love with you, Vye, for this and all you've said on this thread. My only addition is this: The entire point of SL is that you can do whatever you want (for the most part) whenever you want, forcing sunset, dark, daylight, etc. such that you don't have to wait for RL hours to match. That ability alone will enable thousands of Residents to enjoy significant fun in SL AND in RL, should they celebrate it. Further, many people have friends in (gasp) *times zones around the world!!!* and they'd like to be able to celebrate with those friends in SL. Shocking as it seems, Halloween will be a big deal for most of SL, if only for the interest of wandering around and seeing the decorations and costumes. To Lindens who planned this: pooh to you with knobs on.

it's just a game. it's going to be ok, really. take this time to shut your computer down for a few hours and go see if you can remember wut the sun looks like (or your pillow if it's night). or actually WORK and earn your wages. all time better spent. really, it's going to be ok. if you are having pre-shut-down withdrawals, you really need to take a break and reconnect with real life.

it isnt the end of the world and abusing live help isnt any answer...
sure, you are upset at what you perceive as a shortsighted lack of thought of the effect on your event...but honestly...christmas has fallen on a wednesday before and theres been updates...so going the "it's such a popular holiday" route doesn't wash.
- **edit** okay, so ll is closed christmas and thats not happened, but shows how much attention ive paid to updates anyway.**
i feel for you if your event suffers due to an update, but really your point is way too "chicken little" to get any response...

Being an active part of the community here (with a high post count) is in itself not a bad thing. Another forum I belong to, I joined in November 2003 and have about 15,000 posts there. Being active in a community means you are involved, and that you care about those you are playing with and the environment it provides. Broccoli

Well we're back to GMT this weekend so it should be 6pm as it says in the blog. Comparing Halloween to St George's day or July 4th is absurd. The English don't celebrate St George's day to any great degree although things have got livelier over the last few years, St Patrick's day attracts more parties and celebrations in England than St George's day does. I still don't understand why LL's maintenance can't take place on a Thursday for a change.

3ring - no research necessary - it's right next to your name.
Lexxi - no point other than it seemed amusing that someone was telling us to settle down about being online so much and to reconnect with RL, with that much time spent on the forum. Although, from my own activity, the amount one reads and the amount one posts are not at all related, so perhaps 3Ring has more of a RL than many.
Broccoli - being involved and caring about the community is precisely what's driving these rants about the poor choice of date!

If you've been in SL for any amount of time you know that Halloween is a pretty big deal around here. It was poor judgement to schedule downtime for that day. Period. No amount of contrarian, argumentative viewpoints change that.

If St. George is the patron saint of England, who's the patron saint of the US? Does each country have a patron saint? How about Saudi Arabia? Israel?
