Oh, by roleplay I do not mean pretending to be the same in real life. I mean the very art or act of displacing ourselves onto or through our 'avatars.'

Abigail - only the most dedicated 'roleplayers' even try to obscure *all* aspects of their personality. One could argue that in varying degrees all of SL is roleplay. _____________________

Sadly, the same could be said about RL. I have found, in being Immy for SL, that there are a lot of aspects of my personality obscured in my day to day life as well. Much of it is because of my real life appearance. (T_T) Yep, Eliot had it right in Prufrock. |

Leaving discussions of fetishes and psychological undertones aside for a moment...
I consider everybody in SL to be playing a role of some sort. For some it's closer to their RL character, for others it's different. Part of the joy of SL for most is being something other than you are in RL. So I have no problem with people continuing that roleplay when they visit our store - I don't expect them to suddenly "snap out of it" and become the same as their RL persona just because they want to buy something. In fact, depending on where I am, I can also assume a role. If I am being a regular salesperson in our Asian Market and I am wearing a kimono, and have my AO set to the Geisha-type movements, I will tend to talk more in keeping with that image, and that includes to customers. (It actually doesn't hinder the sales process at all, being deferential to the customer). At other times, I am more "Kaldi" (you'll know it when you see it) So within reason I don't mind people continuing to play their role when they visit us - and I will continue to play mine. I won't "play games" with them if I don't have time. I treat everyone pretty much the same. To me this is showing some respect towards the customer - an important part of doing business anywhere. If it gets to the point where it is wholly unproductive, then I will do the same as I do with someone who speaks languages that I have no clue about - we try to find a way to communicate as best we can. Usually, if they are doing something extreme and realise that I want to help, they will temper the "act" a little so that we can get the important business done. In the case of the extreme child-speak where no progress is being made, I would most definitely ask them (in a friendly way) to come back with one of their parents so that we can sort it out between adults. If they are roleplaying they should have no issue with this. _____________________
