Well, you can tell what my viewpoint is, I'm guessing. :-) Many people cannot abide flashing things next to their reading material, so why not find a nice still picture to use instead?

I know, I know. If I don't like it, move on. I do. Or to allow myself to read the writing of those who don't use such GIFs, I mute the person who uses the animated GIF. And that makes me sad.

If it bothers you to the extent that you mute the offending parties, I'd say the problem is yours alone. Are there really that many?

They drive me nuts, too.. Far too distracting.

Press the ESC key a few seconds after the page loads and it'll stop them.

edit: I don't think we're talking about ones like yours, Logan.. It's the ones that try to do 500fps of different colors that are really annoying.

Im personally highly offended by still pictures and feel a profile should be pure and pictureless. I dont want my eyeballs being spammed by your devil imagary so I think the OP is no better than the members with Animated GIFS.

Be gone.

Isn't there an option in User CP's that allows you to turn off viewing forum avatars and signatures?

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Question answered!

Thank you, Sindy!!! I never knew that, obviously. That completely solves the problem. Thank you!!! Now I can unmute the Flashers, which is vastly preferable to muting.

Zaphod, merely consider that browsers offer plug-ins whose sole purpose is to allow management of flashing things in the browser window. There are a lot of people who have difficulty reading while things flash or twitch. If you want to understand what it feels like, try reading by the light of a stroboscope.

Smoke, there is. It's even more draconian than muting and I hope I never have to use it.

One web pages says you can disable gif animations as follows:
From: someone

In Firefox - Type about:config and change the value of string image.animation_mode from normal to none.

In Internet Explorer - Tools -> Options -> Advance. Uncheck the box in Multimedia group that says "Play animations in web pages"

Its the colon after the word "Date" in "Join Date:" that gets my goat.
What's holding the upper dot up anyway?

If you have image block I guess you could just block the images one by one as you see ones that bother you.

You can just turn off inlining images as well (http://forums.secondlife.com/usercp.php - Edit Options, uncheck "Show Images";) and just have them show as a clickable link.

If they're relevant to the post then it's pretty obvious from the context and you can just look, if they're not relevant to the post then you don't miss anything by not seeing them.

I just use an adblock plugin to block the image. Problem solved.

I'm an adblock fan too. Slow moving ones are fine, if they aren't an ad. But, I loathe the ones that are purely designed to make my eyes twitch and possibly bleed.

This reminds me of the time I realized that my friend who I'd been working with for about 6 months was allergic to my perfume... I've been thinking I was being so cool every time I included a little animated .gif in a post. Glad to hear there's a remedy. :)

My view is a simple one. There are bigger things to concern me in the world than an animated gif.

Govindira,

So many people these days keep vigilant watch for things to be annoyed by, and then once found, demand that the annoyance be removed forthwith. The way you worded your OP kinda leaned that way.

If these flashy things present not an annoyance, but a disability to you, I can totally understand that and empathize.

I'm pleased that you've found a solution via other posters in this thread, and I apologize for being snarky.

Why do we have to have so much text cluttering up the nice blank screen? Could we all post a little less? The blue is so calming without all that nasty black :p

I agree, for my windows desktop, I use the Group Policy Editor to disable access to the desktop, giving me a totally blank blue desktop.

I have both avatars and signatures turned off in the control panel, and will use adblock to hide junk that makes it hard for me to read.

Animated gifs are like kids screaming and crying their lungs out at a store. Yeah, there's more important stuff in life to complain about, but they still make for an unpleasant experience.

I love smilies and animated gifs, after all the internet is supposed to be a multimedia experience :D They make me smile and in some cases laugh. How can that be a bad thing?
