On a Mac - CNTR-alt-shift-D (CRTL-shift- D brings up my dock) Just try them all, Client will eventually come up :D

Try Shift+alt+the apple key+D

(no...I don't know what the real name of "the apple key" is...just look on the keyboard and use the one with the apple and the crazy clover-leaf thingey)

I think she's joking...she's quirky like that. ;)

I did think the video tutorials might be of interest to people though, even if they don't cover this particular topic.

those tutorials of torley's are helpful if you can find them LOL

I wish they made things simplier

well if sideways was joking, it was rather ill timed considering the recent events in the forums, of which I have been part of

*shrug* maybe I am too damn sensitive

blech

meanwhile anyone who works with creating clothing or skins or anything that pertains to the avatar and textures please pop over to the textures forum, I need help.

Here's a nice tutorial on snapshot taking. Good work, Torley. Found it by going to Google and using "Second Life tutorial torley snapshot" as search terms.

Quiet Snapshots to Disk

If you get annoyed at the whirrrr-click! that happens whenever you take a snapshot and others complain that you sound like a tourist (it's happened to me!), you can disable that sound and animation. Go to Client menu > Quiet Snapshots to Disk — it does what it says! However, there is a bug (VWR-2448 on our Issue Tracker): it only affects File menu > Snapshot to Disk, and not File menu > Take Snapshot (where the Snapshot Preview palette comes up).

There's a workaround, tho: Client menu > Debug Settings, and in the top text field, enter "UISndSnapshot". In the bottom, erase the "3d09f582-3851-c0e0-f5ba-277ac5c73fb4" so it's blank. You'll still animate when snapshotting, but it'll be silent. If you ever want your snapshot sound back, just click "Reset to default".

I'm not sure if the last part quiets the sound for everyone or just the sound that you hear.

It got a lot more than the above snip on snapshotting. Good article.

I'd like to emphasize that, as mentioned in SuezanneC's post, you MUST use the File > Snapshot to Disk option if you enable 'Quiet Snapshots to Disk.'

That option does nothing for normal snapshots. A shortcut for Quiet Snapshot to Disk is CTRL+` (` is the key in the upper-left corner of your keyboard, usually under Esc).

When used with Snapshots to Disk (only) the 'Quiet Snapshots to Disk' option hides BOTH the gesture and the sound. You can take pics like crazy without anyone knowing.

Also, beware the 'High Res Snapshot' option! This affects snapshots to disk, and they're not kidding. They're HUGE (but also super useful for photoshopped portraits).

EDIT: Another way to stealthily take pics is to walk 20 meters from your target and then cam in to take the picture. You'll make the gesture/sound but your mark won't hear you. Some people just use the Print Screen feature on their PCs, but I think that's a pain. You always have to crop afterward, and there's the additional step of pasting into your picture editor and saving.

There's a way to change the animation that you see, I think, but I don't think it changes what other's see.

There's a section in the LSL wikis on ClientAssetKeys, "assets" being sounds, images, and animations that come with the the client, the secondlife.exe file or variant thereof that displays SL.

I got this from this old mirror of the old lsl wiki at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Internal_Animations.

snapshot eae8905b-271a-99e2-4c0e-31106afd100c avatar_snapshot.bvh

There's a text file in the Second Life program folders that will let you redefine that.

It's been a few years since I played with this file so I don't remember it offhand.

... time passes...

It's called viewerart.xml. It's in the app_settings folder.

On the release candidate version that I'm running at the moment it's
C:\Program Files\SecondLifeReleaseCandidate\app_settings\viewerart.xml

That lists a bunch of stuff that can be modified if you are the sort of person that wants to go to immense trouble for small benefit, with a high chance of messing up, and have to do it over and over for lots of upgrades and different versions of SL.

There's a line in there:
<avatar_snapshot.bvh value="eae8905b-271a-99e2-4c0e-31106afd100c"/>

Change the UUID in there to something harmless like 15468e00-3400-bb66-cecc-646d7c14458e

and I think that will change your snapshot animation to the standing_1 animation.

If you read my little note I don't really recommend doing this unless you actually enjoy this sort of thing. I'm pretty sure the changes you can make with this file are local - only you see the change, everyone else sees things normally. Still, if the animation is really interfering with your snapshot taking it might be worth it.

/me waves at Rhao!

I sure hope you don't think I've muted you, LOL! I've been inworld trying all these tips out. I'm afraid I'm just as unphotogenic here as in RL. Blah! I still have a fairly 'newbie' picture of me on my profile... You're right though, maybe I should have acknowledged your replies sooner. :o

As for Torley's tutorials, I subscribed to his Youtube videos so am able to access them whenever I need a refresher, (which is often).

That happens on almost every single thread I noticed. The question will be answered and then ten more people come along to say the same thing. I wouldn't take it personal. Just some very helpful people here.:)

All of Torley's tutorials are available on youtube. Just search for secondlife tutorial or even Torley.

Failing that, I've actually made the majority available inworld at Harbinger's Haven sandbox.

You should see the Q&A events I attend. It's like 10 helpers to 1 noobie and each question gets spammed with the same answers from at least half of us. I almost never miss the chance to say something silly. (^_^)y

I didn't read every word of every post. The fact that people were still posting inaccuracies is why I bothered posting. Not a big deal.

EDIT: Also, here's your cookie. (Hope you don't mind that I took a bite.)

Thank you all so much for your replies!

I have checked the quiet snapshot to disk and it didn't stop it from happening. I did stop the camera sound though.

Any other ideas?

From: Ann Launay
That should do it, actually...it works for me, in any case. Have you tried relogging since you changed it?

In the 11 months that I have been here, I have always had the "Quiet" option checked. It has never worked. The only way that I have ever been able to take a picture without that animation is if I'm doing some higher priority animation when I take the picture, like dancing. As for the sound, sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli
I tried searching kb for how to stop the animation and finally resorted to live help

this is the answer I got...

Kate: Rhaorth I'm being told that going to Client and turn on "quiet snapshots to disk" also turns off the animation
Kate: then use the snapshot to disk button, not the snapshot button

So I am thinking, that they go hand in hand, quiet snapshots to disk and snapshot to disk button...

try that and see if it helps

(snapshots to disk save them to your pc, you would have to upload them to SL afterwards

Yes, I normally use the snapshot to disk option. Still makes the sound and animation.

I pretty much always use the 'Snapshot to Disk' shortcut (Ctrl-`), so that may be why.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I will try that Control ~ ` heh. The ctrl` option. Maybe it will work. Of course if it works, I'll probably spend more time sitting somewhere not moving at parties. I'm just going to make a fake camera and hold it when I go to parties. That's better all around. Just didn't like the weird animation and annoying sound.
