Around my 3rd or 4th week in SL, I made my first Big Purchase, as dress that cost 500L, in one of the "couture" level stores. I was (and am) very happy with this dress. I had to contact the designer for a little help with the prim skirt, and she was very nice and I complimented her a lot on her work.

In that designer's same store was a gown. I wanted that gown. However I had already spent too much on the dress, so all I could do was moon over the gown. I took a snapshot of it to show people. I pondered it. The skirt part, in the ad on the wall, looked like mysterious browns with glowing embers and shifting light. I just knew this gown would be the gown to end all gowns.

Well I had pondered it long enough, and two days ago I went ahead and bought it, which meant that I was going to have two nice dresses (I can't afford to buy all of them!). I couldn't wait to try it on.

It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen (clothing-wise) in SL. It is irredeemably ugly; it's not a matter of getting it to fit right. Fitting perfectly it's still the ugliest dress I have ever seen. It somehow manages to make my skinny av look dumpy by eliminating her waist and making it look like her boobs sag low. That magical brown skirt? It looks like pale mud. The top is so awful I can't even say, "Well at least I can wear the top with jeans." No. No. I never want to see any part of this thing again.

700L.

Now, in the past I have not hesitated to contact the designer if there has been a technical issue with the outfit. But what would you do if you bought something like this and you knew the only possible thing you can do with it is throw it in the trash?

I am not sure about the designer you bought this dress from, but if you where one of my customers I would definitely want you to contact me about it. Everyone has their own taste so not everyone likes every dress.

The designers won't refund anything, even if it means s/he'll lose popularity; I bought a completely defective product from a store and the owner and staff members simply ignored me for the past month. They better know I'll be doing everything I can to make their popularity go down.
But the answer is simple, don't buy anything from anywhere other than Bare Rose or Discord, and maybe Luna's Boutique and DP YumYum. Their stuff are 100-150L per complete outfit, and are better quality than 99% of the designers out there. Whenever I look at stuff sold by other designers (names won't be mentioned here even though I really want to), with textures done in Paint a price tag that says something like 500L, and compare it to the quality done in Bare Rose, I can't help but laugh.

Then you pay a higher price for a slightly higher quality item, but also risk getting crap for a higher price. To me it's not really worth it and I'm perfectly happy with the stuff from those mentioned stores.

While I do find very little of the higher priced stuff to be worth it, there are a few good ones. There are also many many cheaper ones that are just as good or better -- many more than the few you give credit too.

Some designers will, and some designers won't. It's worth making a polite attempt to gain satisfaction; a lot of people are very, very nice.

I am trying to cultivate a different attitude when it comes to my inventory though. It's stuffed to the gills with freebies from my early days which, although I know I will never wear, I hang onto just in case they might "come in" LOL! Like in RL where you might save a crappy t-shirt to wear while gardening. I have huge folders with names like "not too horrible tops". They need to go!
Yes!! Ha!! I was pondering that very thing two weeks ago! I was saving "okay" t-shirts as well, as if I might need something to wear if everything else is in the wash. I began to notice that I really only want to wear a very few nice outfits in SL, and none of it's going to be in the wash. It's like a psychological shift in perspective had to be made. I had to realize that I was never going to log on SL and think, "Well, ok, today is the day I'm going to wear this t-shirt that isn't so great, but it'll do." What a riot. That's one reason I wanted this gown, because I can be totally dressed up every day in SL...

AK, If it is transfer I will trade with you or just buy it from you for what you paid.
Is anything relatively expensive in SL ever transferrable (serious question, not sarcasm)? Remember that skirt I posted about a few days ago....one reason I'm scared to buy it is because it's no-everything, even no copy. I have no copy shoes and jewelry, and even hair, which can make it a real challenge to create outfit folders. Anyway, I'm grateful for the offer, but this dress is no transfer.

Melita, I've only done one small in-store hunt. I've yet to really look into hunts, though I know I should. As for freebie stuff, when I first joined SL I had no one helping me, and there were miserable times spent wandering through outdoor freebie wastelands, the monotony broken only by the occasional non-English speaking newbie male hitting on me. I can't believe how much of that I was apparently willing to endure. I began to see the same tired stuff in every freebie warehouse. I got SICK of it. I have no idea where to go to get freebies that aren't the same tired junk.

What I really wanted when I bought my first lindens was to be able to leave those wastelands behind and actually purchase quality items. Now I hear there are freebies that are better quality than expensive stuff, and I am making the puzzled sad face. I certainly never found those particular freebies....

There are other interesting comments in this thread that I did not directly respond to, but I'm very grateful for the ideas and hints. I will be taking a snapshot and contacting the designer. The worst that can happen is that I'll be stuck with an ugly dress and a jaded attitude.

Right off the top of my head I know that Blaze still sells transfer/no copy dresses. But you are right, the majority seem to prefer no transfer and allow copy.

AK I have some freebie blogs for you. They do the hard part - sift through it all and post pix and links to it. You just pick and choose. :)

Ask the designer if they will model that skirt you are hesitant to buy. They might.

I can relate to your experience. I have seen outfits I have just had to have spent 1500L$ on them got them home tried them on and though that looks crap. What do I do? If i can give it away if not leave it in my inventory and maybe fine i can use parts of it . Like RL some times things just dont look the same on me as on the model

Ugh! I had those days too. I don't think I found my way to better stuff or the forums even til I was around at least 6 months old. At least you're ahead there.

If LL is to ever improve the first hour experience, they should include advice to run from anywhere that combines freebie and warehouse in the name. (Although the Gnubie Store does make up for it and is worth a wander through for good stuffs.)

Update:
After a busy weekend I just now had time to take a picture of The Dress. OK, this is what makes me mad. SL takes a rectangular photograph and then stretches it a little when it makes a square photograph in my inventory. Why??? If you take this dress pic and stretch it vertically the dress looks better!!!

If SL hasn't buggered up the way snapshots work again, you can choose the size of the pic before you take it. What you want is a square image. The exact number of pixels isn't important, as long as the horizontal and vertical numbers are the same. Play around with your snapshot settings a bit.

(I'd be more explicit, but I always shoot the whole screen, save it to disk, and crop it in Photoshop, then pay the 10L to upload the final image.)

Generalisation and one I cannot agree with. I refuse to have dissatisfied customers. It's as simple as that in my store.

One thing I don't like is how certain hair vendors will give you a demo that is a very pale color so that flaws aren't as easily seen. I'll buy the hair in a dark brown, then, and end up muttering wtf. So even demos aren't necessarily a guarantee.

That's a confusing comment, as I always see the flaws better/easier with pale colored hair vs. dark color hair. The lines of the prims "joining" together and like seem to stand out a mile away with pale hair, while remaining hidden more with dark. At least as I've seen.

I bought something from one of those stores you mention above this weekend. I don't want to be more specific, and I normally find them to be good. The item, while just under 300L (can't recall now, 175, 250?), looked like crap. All the prim parts looked like melted steel. Well, except for the collar. Which wouldn't/couldn't be fitted no matter what.

You can find crap even in low cost quality places.

And you can find wonderful, quality bargains in upscale stores, too. There are no generalizations about SL merchandise that you can apply universally.

Bare Rose is certainly good, and their stuff is amazingly priced. But there are tons of other great designers out there, and I don't mind at all paying some of them $L1,000 or more for a dress.

Maybe it's about time for another Cartel Shopping Trip. Save up your $L, AK, and come along with us!

Also remember as the old saying goes "There is no accounting for taste"

When we still had the house lot open it never failed to amaze me that the house I considered my ugliest build was my best seller and the one I considered my best build sold allof 3 copies in 2 years.

shrugs

go figure

Maybe that is what happened to the original vendor when they made their ad.

Would you like some shopping landmarks? I'll browse my inventory for less known ones if you wish.
