How Are They Getting In?

I HATE banlines, so my property is open, but my doors are locked and my teleporter only works if you are part of the group. But every day, I see from my visitor list maker that people have been in my house! How are other residents getting in?

Just curious.....

People can cam into your home.. select a chair and choose sit. That is all that is needed to come into your home. Locked doors are good for those who respect them.. but that is not always what happens.

If you cam inside of a house and right click sit on something inside, voila, you're in.
Not that I do this....ever! Really that's rude.

Meh...Mac beat me.

My guess? They're probably just camming into your house and sitting on something. That will bypass the locked doors and/or the transporter.

Two things..

1 your visitor list will have a range at which it will scan for agents - possibly it is scanning outside your house?

2 walls and doors are meaningless. All one has to do is move his/her camera inside your house and sit on something, and magically they're in.

Camming in and sitting on something like a chair, with a sit target. Or, rez a cube, sit on it and edit the cube into position.

It is possible to sit on a prim and slide it thru a wall. But it is also possible that your visitor list maker is set to a distance that is larger then just the interior of your house, so it is picking up people who are outside or flying by. If it is the commonly available freebie visitor detector you can edit the distance to reduce it in the script.

Another option is there are ways to rez an item (mystitool does this) that can be set on and you can literally move through solid items such as walls.

Turning build off on your land is a way to defeat that.. but most will never go through the trouble when they can simply cam/select/sit.

Welcome to SL.
So many ways it not even funny. Also you vistor counter may be counting people that just come within 96 meters so they may not even being paying attention to you. If you have any seats you can just cam into a place and sit there. There are all type of things that let you pass through walls.

wow all these replies when I thought I was going to be the first to respond. lol

I had always wondered whether the banlines could be circumvented by the cam-in-and-sit trick. I never attempted to verify it myself, out of respect for others' property. But now I know.

Edit: So to increase "privacy," one might need more than banlines, but some sort of script that did periodic scans for intruders and ejected them?

And your solution to the problem is a security device which can work inside your house and eject all the intruders.

Have you thought about using a security orb? If you get it set up right, it shouldn't be intrusive and it allows you to avoid those godawful banlines. No security system is perfect, but locked doors only keep out decent people.

I wear a llPushObject script that still works against walls... and push-restrictions... and script-restrictions. Actually... I've been making my own multi-tool while practicing scripting. That was the first script I got to work. (^_^)y

Invest in a decent security orb. If you are a private sim, be sure to read the covenant. Most will allow you to have one but you have to set it by the instructions of the covenant and will have to add the sim owner and probably their assistant. If you on mainland, you can set the to immediately boot someone off. That is the only way to solve your problem.

Also someone can pick a spot on the map and tp in. I had this happen a couple of weeks ago. They see a black square on the map (my roof) and click it for a tp destination.

Wildefire, I DO have a burning joint left in the ashtray on my deck; maybe that is what is attracting them. Haha. No SLURL for any of you guys. Find my "awesome place" on your own! LOL

All these answers were wonderful! My visitor list maker only works if it is touched, so I know they must have at least clicked on it even if they weren't actually in the house. You guys are so funny. I love the idea of riding an object into a house. What a concept! I admit I love to camera into other people's places, but I wouldn't dream of going in and snooping around (anymore). I used to do that when I was a newbie and I got ejected and yelled at once and learned my lesson. What a newb I was then!

Thanks everyone. Good suggestions. I knew I could count on ya'.

Your Pal, Cheekers.

If it just works inside your house that's ok, but if it works for all your land, please don't set it to immediately boot. Give us honest folks who accidentally cross onto your land a chance to leave. I hate being ejected when I fly or walk across a parcel where I had no idea I wasn't wanted, or a few times when i've been on a friend's parcel and accidentally crossed an unmarked property line. It's hard to tell. Just 10 seconds is all I need to be gone.

Ban lines will prevent the cam-in-and-sit trick. But ban lines in general only affect 50 M above the terrain surface, unless you are an individual who has explicitly been banned by name. And ban lines don't prevent clicking on stuff, buying from vendors, looking, etc...

If you want to keep strangers out of a specified volume of space, you need a security orb that will detect and eject them. Just make sure you configure it properly, so it doesn't TP home some innocent person walking near the house, but still outside your land!

There is only one real form of privacy in SL. Buy your own private island sim, and uncheck "Public Access". Then the only people who can enter or see your sim are those you add to the sim access list.

Why bother doing anything? If you're just seeing a list of people on your visitor list maker why don't you just get rid of the list maker? Have you ever seen a single person drop in on you while you were at home? It sounds like you don't see anyone. I'd rather have one less active scanner on the grid.

..visitor list maker only works if it is touched,

There you go, make you list maker into a trap, if they click it send them a message, in fact have it yell the message - avatar name "Don't touch things that don't belong to you. Private Property." and have the script eject and ban them.

An orb won't really keep out the determined though.

If your land is group-owned (just to make sure the script doesn't borrow your abilities from other groups - which only happens when you're actually in the sim): stand on a neighbouring parcel, rez a prim, set the appropriate sit target to put you inside of your house and sit on the prim.

Your orb will likely detect the presence of the intruder, but since they're not actually on the parcel as far as the sim is concerned your orb most likely won't work (can't unsit, can't push due to sitting, can't eject, can't teleport home).

If you ever run into someone used that method, just landban them and they'll go *poof*; or set your orb to llAddToBanList everyone it spots as an intruder, or simply use access restrictions since they do actually work as they should and aren't subject to sim lag either.

Bah! Am I the only one that doesnt mind folks coming around my place (the house, not the shop)?

The last time I checked my visitor list, within 1 week I had 45 people.

Dont care if they sit around & watch movies or annoy the neighbors.

And no- you wont find any naughty things there. Just aint my style! :)

As long as they don't try to drop in while I'm there and.. ahem... busy..., I don't really care.
