First you need to send Trout some dirty pictures.

/peaks into thread...

Who knew that was all it took to qualify?

/flips hair, strikes a pose, struts out of thread feeling quite professional herself ;)

I'm sorry but modeling school sounds sham-ish. Kind of like those real life modeling 'schools'. What exactly is there to learn when you're an av? What exactly are the tough criteria? You can BUY a model's figure in SL. You can customise your av any way the designer wishes. Maybe they will even help you with some of that if you're lucky.

Not all SL models do catwalk shows; (and the ones I've seen just stand there, or walk a regular walk a little bit) some perch on rotating platforms. You don't even always have to be at your computer during it. I don't see the difficulty level, here.

$10,000L? That's what, $40 USD? For an avatar modeling 'school'? Ridonkulous.

I wonder what the tricks are to make runway shows work. Site them high in the sky, far away from any build textures, and across four sim corners? Get the models to pre-bake in another sim and TP into view well in advance of each walk? Delay the show by 15 minutes and admonish the audience to arrive on-time... and in low-ARC-wear (an audience of fashionistas, no less  )? Even so, as best I can figure, this really shouldn't work well at all.

Runway in the sky
Clear cache and pre-bake your outfits
Low ARC hair
No attachments other than those required

And beyond that, I'm not at liberty to discuss in-house trade secrets.

Its every girls dream to walk the catwalk and be admired. Fortunately, SL makes it possible!!! Unfortunatly, SL makes it possible for everyone. The Market is floaded with want-to-be models and there is not a huge demand.

1. Be prepared to invest in you avatar. When your starting out you need several different skins, shapes, hair, makeup (hence the different skins), clothing, assessories, etc...

2. Be prepared to change your appearance often. Forget having a favorite look or shape. When I model I can be anything anytime.

3. Be prepared to take your own pictures. Its cheaper rather than paying 1000's of Lindens for something you just need to practise at. Take lots of pictures of yourself, Head shots, full body, swimsuit, nudes, Different skins, different shapes, color, Black and White, etc.... Join a photography group and ask questions. You may want to invest in a backdrop and lighting system (I did). Build a profolio and be prepared to hand it out on a moments notice, within a notecard. You may need to buy photoshop or PSP to do touchups

4. There are a lot of modeling agencies out there so maybe you want to freelance. That is how I started. Basically, I joined any paganent I could find. Cost range to join a paganent anywere for 20L to 500L. But the benefit is talking with the other girls. You will learn tricks about how to do a quick change by grouping skins, hair, clothing in one folder. What HUDS they are using or how to build your own and what types of walks they are using and where to get them. This is a far cheaper alternative than joining a Modeling School and I havnt meet anyone that wont give me a LM or a push in the right direction.

5. Be prepared for a lot of rejection. After all the time and money invested in SL Modeling, the fact of the matter is... were all beautiful. Sometimes I make the wrong discission on what to look like during an interview and I'm told that I'm not refined enough, or my skin is too light, or they don't see fashion sense in me. Take it all with a grain of salt and look for the next job. A lot of times its just a personality difference. Learn from it and walk away. Don't burn the bridge!

6. How to find a job? I usually look on the Secondlife forum - events - paganent. Everything is there for store modeling to modeling events. Go to them (or IM them) and look for the event planner (same person that posted the event) and ask questions on how you can participate.

7. Be preparaed to buy a new PC if yours does not have a FPS over 30 in a crowded SIM. No one likes to hire a model that can't move or falls off the stage. It is becoming a trend now to ask what your vid card is and how much RAM you have by a sponsor.

8. Its the old story, the more you put into it the more you will get out. Unfortunately, it will never pay the SL bills as you usually get "paid" by the products you fashion. I can count the paying jobs on one hand but I do have a lot of merchanise :)

Most of all, have Fun.

Follow these simple steps:

1.) Buy a 1000L "model" shape (no mod).

2.) Buy a 2000L "model" skin (again, no mod).

3.) Spend out the wazoo on various eyes, prim hairs, jewelry, AOs, and modeling poses.

4.) Join a Brazilian modeling group, which promises you fame, fortune, and lots of free designer clothes - not to mention that nifty "Top Model" tag.

5.) End up dancing at Club Zomgwtfbbq in an attempt to recoup the insane amounts of money you blew in your quest to become an SL model.

Actually, that begs the question: how DO you spend 3k on a date in SL? We talking buying new clothes for you and your lady friend, or tipping your hot air balloon operator? ;)

Or just catch me on a good day when I have L$ burning a hole in me pocket :p

Shapes should not run more than 1,000 total. Do NOT get no mod unless they have several versions included with the shape. At the very least you will need a "noassatall" shape version for system skirts. Good shapes can be had for 100 or less; price does not equal quality. You will need about 5 distincly different shapes tho, so help insure different skins will match up correctly.

Good skins run 1,000L$ and UP for each single makeup version. I would sugguest getting two or three different skin packages from different creators. Expect to pay 15,000L$ or more total.

Prim hair packs ... 750 per full "fat pack" sound about right? Budget 10,000L$ for hair.

Eyes ... ice blue, deep blue, violet, green, honey, hazel, brown, and grey .. 2,000L$
Prim lashes and (possiblly) twinkle 200L$ ...

Shoes! Despite what you may tell yourself, all you need is one style but in losts of colors. Simple pumps or maryjanes, no bling, fit and color match are what's inportant. You do not want the shoes to overpower what you will be modeling so boots, platforms and anything covered in studs or rhinestones are not for modeling. Stuill ... 2500L$ for shoes minimum.

Jelwery needs to be simple for much the same reasons as shoes. Necklace, earrings and braclets in gold, silver and pearl. 2,000L$ easily.

Stockings and manicures ... 2,500L$

AO and poses 5,000L$

add in a five outfits at 1,500L$ each and porfolio photos ... you can be a model for about 50,000L$. That's 185US$ more or less.

I don't know how how many fashion shows there are but I have yet to see one at all. But then I don't go looking for them either. Still, I would think the runway modeling gigs would be just as costly, cut throat and fickel as they are in RL.

If, on the other hand, you have one good AV and an eye for fashion, you could always just start a blog or flickr page (much like Ann does) and share some of your photos here in the undead thread :D

There is so much more to do in the fashion world then model! It seems that a lot of female avie's dream of being a model...I dreamt of it myself. But I have actually found myself well immersed into the fashion world without being a model. I do do a bit of modeling, but I am most well known as a journalist/blogger. I think I get even more respect then models do! So, if you really just want to get in to the SL fashion world, set your sights wider than just modeling!

And for all of you "what do you need to learn to be a model?" people...there is sooooo much to learn! I have not been to any school, but entering contests and having best friends that are models, and my fiancee is a model instructor...well that helps :-P

Okay, so what do they learn? I'm guessing that the industry is set up currently to indeed require a lot of knowledge on the part of models, but if models didn't work so cheaply, much of their work could be replaced by a flock of properly programmed bots.

Here's why: "Models" in SL are not beautiful because of some rare perfection in genetics, as in RL. Rather, they're beautiful because the RL person who creates the avatar has very good fashion sense. So, really, a model's role is to act as a sort of free-lance fashion consultant for all the designers who don't specify the entire presentation of their designs. If this fashion consultant role could be performed a day or so before the show or shoot, the actual time-consuming crap of performing the show or shoot could be handed off to a bot.

Why doesn't it work this way? I suspect that's for the same reason that third world countries don't benefit much from high tech automation: the cost of doing everything manually is so low that it just doesn't save anything. So, as long as the supply of models vastly exceeds the demand, our hypothetical bot-assisted modeling agency will never have margin for profit.

One skill that i haven't seen mentioned yet is the ability to edit attachments to best show off the item.

There's a world of difference between wearing an item and sometimes spending ages hand editing linked prims.

I dont know how old in world the op is but this is an important skill for anyone wanting to look good and some never learn it.

I guess this could be classed as learn to build but that is not an appealing topic to everyone, nor is scripting.
