Technet subscribers get microsoft's version of 'first look'. It's called Alpha Testing.

I don't think his post was about WIndows 7 really, more ranting about people with lower education and snobish against those that use a "lol" in a post...

btw. I have seen Professors doing that... (the "lol" thing)

now back to the 16th century please...

The Art Department doesn't count, even if they are the source of 90% of what makes dealing with the Financial Aid and Math Departments bearable, just don't let Public Safety notice... :o)

If anybody is planning on running SL on Windows 7, then don't...lol. Of all the games I have (which run sooo much smoother), SL is the only one that absolutely refuses to run at all. It will tell you that you have out of date hardware/drivers.
Just thought i'd post this just warn anybody thats thinking of switching to Windows 7 soon. I'm sure LL will have a W7 install sometime, but as for now, they don't..lol.
Cheers
I heard Fallout 3, Duke Nukem, WoW, GTA5 and COH won't run on it either, what games have you found it works good on, if SL is the only failure?
Maybe you need to invest in a decent computer :P

Windows 7 was in closed beta until today; some people have it legitimately. (Microsoft released it to open beta at CES.) The fact that the viewer won't run well on it is an interesting data point, but not much more right now. It's not surprising, really; Second Life uses OpenGL, and the Microsoft-provided video drivers for any version of Windows don't have competent OpenGL support. The proprietary drivers from ATI and NVidia do but they don't have any drivers ready for Windows 7 yet.

Basically, I expect that Second Life will work well on Windows 7 as soon as there is a reliable driver from the video card maker. That might not be the first driver release for Windows 7; one problem when Vista came out is that the drivers supported DirectX but not OpenGL. I think it took NVidia about 6 months from the release of Vista to get out a driver with fulling working OpenGL support.

Linden Lab probably has a test copy of Windows 7. But they're largely at the mercy of what the video card companies do.

I have it for testing purposes..its my line of work. I'm doing a presentation of windows 7 on monday, even. Anyway, just putting out the SL W7 info.

I am so waiting for Windows 7. I skipped Vista waiting for the real next version of Windows.

I would imagine being able to load up on RAM would make a difference for one thing. As far as I know, XP has a limit of about 4 G RAM which includes the RAM on the graphics card(s) and page file while the 64 bit Vista can go at least to 8 G (maybe more?).

A good 64bit Windows OS would suit me fine. Not smart enuf to use Linux but still I soldier on.

As long as windows 7 isn't OUT of beta and rc's, anything can be changed, tossed out, or put in the OS. So, on a beta you cannot predict anything at all. It's just a glimpse of what they have so far, nothing more, nothing less.

I did a test instal of the 'PB' beta version of Windoze 7 (build 7000) on a spare machine:

AMD Sempron 3000+, 1 GB RAM, 40gB HDD, ATI X1650 w/256mb.

My verdict: Slowest. Operating System. Ever. More like a screenshot of a desktop with an eye-candy slideshow. I lost my patience after an hour and wiped the disk. That machine is back humming along nicely with my 'volume license' version of XP-Pro.

It looks like Vista and acts like Vista. I may try the MS beta version that's coming out tomorrow but I'm not expecting any improvement.

FYI: Windoze 7 did actually accept the ATI Vista drivers so there's hope yet. If it's raw perfomance you want stick to Windoze 2000 or XP if you really need a few bells'n'whistles.

Protip: Stick to Windoze XP. If you need the eye-candy install Window Blinds.

Yeah, what Lyla said. I don't know how you got ahold of W7, but as it's not even in beta testing yet, it doesn't matter if it can run SL or not. At least give them time to bring it out to beta where you can legally be running it.

In short, your post doesn't matter, as it's actually an operating system which does not exist when you come down to practical terms. Stop using it and stick with something legal, you'll find the experience a whole lot better.

Some of us could well be MS Beta Testers. They have a smaller private Beta before the public Beta. I was a member of the Windows '98 Beta team for example.

Windows 7 public beta will be a free download tomorrow.

No indication that Microsoft is going to back down on the ribbon. :p

Well you installed a pirated copy (you openly admitted that) Why not wait for the real thing instead of one that may have been seeded from a computer with a virus...

It gave me the same error, but updating the video driver (Nvidia) through Windows Update took care of that. It (1.21.6 & the RC viewer) is running pretty well for me now.

I'm having issue too and it's the same issue I had when I beta tested Vista. My guess is that people who are having success with build 7000 are running Nvidia cards?

I am running an ATI 4670 with the Prerelease WDDM 1.1 drivers from ATI that I acquired from windows update. I also went and downloaded the most Windows 7 beta drivers from ATI's website and still no dice. Anyone having success with an ATI card?

Windows 7, hahahahahahahaha.

You don't think MS is going to spend all that time and money to just bypass what it really is, Vista dressed up.

A pig in a dress is still a pig! OINK!

it's the lack of opengl drivers that is causing you to be unable to play. Nvidia users just need to install the nvidia wddm 1.1 drivers and your good to go (tho I have noticed occasional texture corruption). ATI users most likely need to install the vista drivers if the new ones they are releasing do not include the opengl stuff yet.

Well I got Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 installed and now I got a bit of a problem. Second Life doesn't like to render. Doesn't crash, just doesn't render an image on the screen. Other games (both Direct3D and OpenGL) work fine with the latest WDDM drivers from nVidia (185.20), just SL gives me issues. Anyone else have this problem?

Did you get these from Nvidia or Windows update? That doesn't sound like the right version.

Edit: It's not. 179.23 is the version you should have. Maybe uninstall and reinstall through Microsoft update.

ATI drivers on Windows 7 beta 1 32-bit mode
01-12-2009 13:28
Now that Microsoft has opened up Windows 7 Beta to the general public, I downloaded the 32-bit version (from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx, not Pirate Bay) and installed it. The install initially used the default generic video drivers, which made graphics of any kind slow and ugly. But after downloading and installing updates from Microsoft, the OS now automagically uses ATI drivers and the graphics seem fast enough to support SL. I'll give SL a whirl on it later today.

My verdict: trying to run a O/S with more bells and whistles than Vista on one gig of ram, when Vista takes 2 minimum is trying to make it preform poorly so you can be chicken little or something.

My experience with Windows 7:

Downloaded the Beta on Saturday. Install went flawlessly - better that either XP or Vista. It recognized every piece of hardware on my box and installed workable drivers. Running Update installed device-specific drivers, especially for my Nvidia 8800 GTS (which obviously worked better).

The current SL and Hippo viewer work without any problem whatsoever - I've been on both for several hours without any crashes.

My opinion is that the Windows 7 beta, at it's current state, is much more stable that Vista was at this stage (actually maybe more than Vista's current state). I'm very optomistic about this OS.

I am running Windows 7 Beta build 7000.

I was surprised that it found all my drivers first try.

And yes, its legal, you can download the beta off of Microsofts website for the next 2 weeks for free.

Works for me
01-12-2009 17:45
Yep -- my Windows 7 Beta 1 32-bit version works with Second Life client 1.21.6. My ATI Radeon Xpress 200 is a bit slow for Second Life, but looks to me like Second Life on Windows 7 is about as fast as it ever was on XP. As I mentioned before, I did have to run Microsoft Update to get the non-generic drivers for my graphics card.

179.23 isn't any better. Also 179.23 is 2 months old and 20 revisions behind. 185.20 is the latest version and is specifically made for Windows 7 supporting WDDM 1.1. 179.23 was not made with Windows 7 in mind and is just a Vista driver. I think the issue stems from the fact I'm using the 64 bit Windows 7 as it runs fine under 32 bit as previous experiences (I used the pre-beta 6801 32bit build before this) and reports imply with the same version drivers.
