I just wonder if advertising a novel in Second Life would be an effective way of reaching potential customers. Presumably people who are in SL are here because they are NOT reading novels in their spare time. Various corporations set up sims in SL and apparently some have left again - not because there's anything wrong with SL so much as if you want to know about, say, Mecedes-Benz cars, you're more likely to try their website than look at 3D model cars in SL. Better to try a literary site which you can guarantee is visited by bookish people. I tend to ignore ads in Second Life, especially if they are about Real Life goods and services. Other people have told me they do the same.

I've searched for books in second life I'd probably buy from Amazon if they had a decent sim here and it was user friendly.

Lots and lots and lots of time And I've found books through SL (books in SL and books to check out elsewhere). I read and visit SL. I spend less time watching television (please do not see that as an anti-tv statement, I love television and movies and all that - I just spend less time paying attention to television and movies now - something had to give).

Personally I am not fond of RL advertising in SL, and would not buy anything advertised here. I basically ignore all those ads anyway. But I don't begrudge you trying to sell your work. But I'd suggest you be a bit less mercenary about it, a little less dismissive of SL users, and most importantly...Don't believe everything you read in the New York Times.

Its ironic that someone who wants to publicize a novel (which if any good is immersive) is actively dismissing Second Life residents for being immersed in a virtual world. Unless the OP is trying the combative grouch marketing style, I simply dont get it. ----- But to be nice, Ill go back to the Original Question - How about a small build designed to show the novel in a interactive way? One thing that is easy to do in Second Life, is stage Virtual Photographs A few scenes from the Book as a visual sell (much like creative Cover Art ) can help add interest. As well as some atractively placed Selections from the text as a Teaser. Perhaps some human interest about the Author and why hes trying to become a sucessful writer. ------ Basically Teleport to a Skybox that IS a Dust Jacket of the Book , in expanded detail. ------- You could easily do that on a simple 512.

Especially when it is a Sci Fi novel. It could be the next Snowthingie , or whatever.

I thought he said it "makes fun of positive thinking." Which, judging by his attitude here, seems like something he's highly qualified to do.

I am a writer and I own a bookstore on Book Island. We have many writers there and now, quite a few publishers also. You can buy books written in SL or RL...and you can find links to Amazon.com to buy more RL books.
Look us up - we've grown from just a few stores to a larger place and in the next couple of weeks are almost doubling in size!
On August 25th we celebrate the gothic novel by having a Goth fashion show - so come dressed in your favorite Goth/Gothic style. We also have a coffee bar/discussion area opening that is being manned by volunteer Librarians (so many literary types hung out at the Reference Desk they wanted to move us somewhere to allow the Librarians to do their job of helping newbies!)
So...write a book, sell a book - but don't expect SL to make you a millionaire...and if you go somewhere else where there are 'real' people, more power to you but SL is still going to be the best virtual world out there!

Hey cut the original poster guy some slack and stuff. He just wants his book to be famous without having to put any effort at all into it. You can just hope he didnt have the same attitude when he wrote the darn thing.
