Hello,

I have played a lot of pen and paper rpgs and quite a few computer rpgs, so I am curious about rpgs in SL. Are there any that people can recommend that are inexpensive? I am also curious as to what people think of the sl technology for rpgs, does it work well?

Thanks!

Doh, I should clarify that I mean roleplaying games, not roleplaying in the sense of naughty hijinks :)

Well.. the technology yeah, but the Gor lifestyle is way too skewed in SL in my opinion.. its all the bad, barely any of the good...

Anyway, in general I think that RP sims work well, but actual RPGs with combat, everything like that.. can't come close to measuring up to full RPGs like Everquest and WoW. WHile they can be pretty good in SL (And much more customized of course), I don't do them in SL. I have EQ2 for that if I want it.

I was just kidding around. It's a bit of a joke here. Mention Gor, get the thread locked. :)

Toxian city is an RPG I believe. Pretty popular I think.

Gor is a lifestyle essentially... its a type of slavery and bdsm that is described in many books, which take place on Gor, not Earth.

(Oh and if I piss off any gorean people with a bad explanation.. sorry. But I'm no expert =P)

I could see how SL could be the perfect blend of computer-y goodness with the creativity of tabletop, depending on the players. I'll check out Toxia, thanks! :)

It really depends on what you want for RP.

Combat-based RPGs imo are a bit wonky in SL. The engine isn't really set up for it. But Toxian is a good place to start. Also City of Lost Angels could be an option for you.

You won't find any WoW hunt-mobs-to-level type play.

But if you are looking for a community that RPs something (vampires, steampunk, elves, whatever), I'm sure you can find that easily enough.

From what I've seen before most rpg sims in SL are free to play. They usually have basic clothing for new people to wear. If you're thinking of fighting I think you do have to buy the weapons and huds required for combat. Does the technology work for rpgs? I think it does. There's really no other game environment that gives you the ability to make up any kind of rpg you want.

Is Toxian City the place we went to Hate? If it is, then I warn all that it can be very laggy.

Yes, but we were laggy elsewhere too. I've been there before without issue.

The I Am Legend RPG is getting a lot of praise.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Thanks for the offer Crunch! :) I think I am looking for a spooky, Cthulhu/Ravenloft/Silent Hill kind of thing. I might even check out some of the world of darkness stuff, though I'd rather hunt vampires than be one :)

ps: I check ed out the I am Legend thing, it is pretty neat but wayyy too laggy. I don't see SL as a very good platform for FPS type games.

Lost Angels just actually switched from its mainland situation to an all new island build and we are, quite simply, busier than ever.

CoLA is completely free to play and has, what is considered, one of the best game systems in Second Life and that costs nothing as well.

I of course, am biased so I'm only really sharing what other people tell me here rather than tooting my own horn.

Theres also Toxian City, another RPG in the same general genre but they have a pay to play model. Midian City, which is a slightly different genre in the same area, that has a pay to play model as well and uses a very simple and restrictive game system. Dark Life, which has always been relatively popular. Capture Role Play....umm...hrrm.

Well theres a ton of actual RPGs out there, some last a few months, others last a long time, City of Lost Angels has been around since September of 2006 and as I said just moved to its own island finally after a year on the mainland and appears to work for a lot of people, or at least the 2500 of them on my website.

I would highly recommend checking out all the options, many of the combat/RPG systems out there don't cost much to get started (its the keeping going that gets costly) so they're all worth a look.

Suzanna may have been modest so I'll blow a trumpet about City of Lost Angels or CoLA as it's widely known. It's IMHO one of the best if not 'the' best RPG sim in SL. Roleplay is the primary theme with many individual plotlines occurring within the city as well as city wide storylines as well. The roleplay is freestyle with few set rules that any new comer can quickly pick up. It is well staffed with GMs for any help or info you need though most other players will gladly help out.

The CoLA theme is a post apocalyptic city scape inhabited by humans, vampires, demons, lycans, nekos, supernaturals and various hybrids. Even though I mentioned it is primarily RP there is the excellent CCS system for metered combat to resolve conflict issues and it is quite simply the most advanced and best combat system in SL bar none and it's free. In addition there are many other CCS enabled sims so your character is able to enter those at the same strength and levels it would have in CoLA giving you the option of playing another character role in another sim and of course enjoy a different environment though the sheer back tingling eye candy of CoLA would be hard to beat.

I would strongly urge you to check it out along with others mentioned here and if you need further info CoLA has it's own website at the link below.

I'm a GM at Hogwarts Reborn, which is a Harry Potter RP sim that has one whole sim for RP, a decent sized amount of another for shopping/light RP, and there is currently a fundraiser on the way for another full sim. It has a lot of members, so if you're into Potter stuff, check out the new members kit (look up Wizard's Alley and its staring you in the face at the teleport landing point). We currently have a fully functioning Wizard's (Diagon) Alley, Knockoff (Knockturn) Alley, Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and a Quidditch field/league. There are also tons of classes in different timezones that student members can go to, just like in the books.

I looked at Toxian a few weeks back. You need a darkened room and A1 eyesight!!
I was only exploring so no comment of the RPG.

Add: Sometimes my screen scrolls all the way to the end of the thread ..... sometimes I read the date ... this time round .. neither :D

There is a group forum that appears to have been created to discuss RPG in SL.

/316/1.html

There had to have been a group in SL that created that forum.

Even if the forum and group are not real active currently there might be information to be had there.

Just as a clarification ... while Midian City offers a system, its use is purely optional. It is not required, nor is one required to "pay to play" in Midian City.

Instead, we place a strong emphasis on freeform text based interaction in our roleplay, much like the MUDs and MUCKS of old. In fact, many of our long time, hardcore roleplayers opt not to use the system at all, but instead prefer using their creativity and imagination to emote their every interaction, including combat ... which is freer and less restrictive that any game system could ever be.

I simply meant, as pay to play goes, you have to buy a system, you have to buy items that work with that system...which is accurate in regards to Midian City's combat/game system.

And while RPing every interaction can be freer and less restrictive than any game system can be, its also open to the myriad problems of meta-gaming and variabilities in player RP skill levels that come along with it. Midian though is, a great place and I've always said it was.
