I think he did the right thing, he needs some time away from the chaos and to get over having his RL invaded.

Emotions are running really high.

Ah if FIC just needs some time off, then I can understand that.

I'm not entirely sure why the forums had to close rather than simply banning the troublemakers.

It basically seems that somebody posted some material (spoof rap lyrics apparantly) that made an illegal threat against another Resident with regard to SLCC.

I guess I'm not tech-nerdy enough to understand what there is to fear from the Google search engine that necessitates taking a site down.

Objectionable, threatening posts were made on SC and Mother shut down the forum in order to have time (and peace) to remove the posts before they were archived by Google. The objectionable materials were then reposted on SL Universe, so Cristiano went through the same shutdown to purge and ban as needed.

If SC reopens, which Mother is saying is now a possibility, it will have to be with some moderation. We have shown, most unfortunately, that lack of moderation simply can't be sustained.

You could find the offending posts using Google, therefore whatever they say could be carried on.

SC lets a lot of questionable material slide, why was this any worse? Terrorism or death threats involved or what?

yes unfortunately due to the no moderation rule people who let themselves loose control easily will do it there which results in some cases death threats, stalking, releasing of information which should not be released and more.

Not my cup of tea I expect people to act as human beings and know right from wrong some people can't tell the difference /shrug

It would be unfortunate if this mess were to show up on these forums. I would have to present the heads of all those involved to LR on platters; I would hate to see LR ban anyone but I can't shirk my duties. Please excuse me, I need to find my riot shield.

I only read one thread there, where one or two brainless people were giving out private info on another resident like telephone number and rl address. Regardless of the person involved, it should be a no no.

I lurked there a bit a while back and I did not like the feel of that place one bit. It was too nasty, even for me.

if you are trying to run a web site and make it profitable you will want to use google's ad-sense and others that are available. If you subscribe to ad-sense then google will police your content, if they find stuff that is offensive they will pull your ad-sense account, meaning a huge chunk of revenue gone for a site like this.

I wonder if SL's legal eagles are checking other forums? A friend who's a moderator on a popular forum mentioned that the admin's were contacted by someone representing SL regarding some negative posts on there.

Linden Lab has made it clear that anything posted off LL's servers is outside their jurisdiction. For one thing, they don't want the task of policing other people's servers. Another issue is identity verification as LL has no way to confirm if the Aimee Weber in Second Life is the same Aimee Weber that is off posting furious lies, threats, Nazi propaganda, and scandalous photos of herself.

I'm not sure if the policy has changed but I doubt it. I would love to hear more about what happened with your friend.

I totally missed whatever it was that Mother had to shut the forums down for, but I tend to not read the drama threads anyway.

After reading what happened at SLU though, I believe I'll wait to see if moderation/banning is utilized if and when Mother opens them back up. Absolute trainwreck.

Well as only being a member of slu I kinda feel like my little world of SLU has been terrorized by this bulldozer or hurricane or something. I go to the forum as part of the usual coffee break rituals and i find this trainwreck of people calling each other names and that was the nice part. Suffice it to say that I kinda feel like the horde from WoW has come and taken over my homestead and is dancing on the tables and drinking my booze lol

LoL. My friend should ask the admins if it was really a lawyer or someone pretending to represent SL. They may not be reading this board, but at least one of their moderators is.

To each their own, Brenda, and some of that may have even been *when* you happened to lurk. There are people there that I would like to pillory, but there have been times for me - very difficult RL-issue times - where dozens of people were behind me with strong words of support and copious well wishes.

No, it isn't a forum for everyone. But it isn't an ugly, black pit either. In addition to the morons, it claims among it's members a very large number of witty, intelligent, and compassionate people.
