Worked for Sam Walton.

In fact, I'd be seriously worried if SL were the exclusive club of the elite--both socioeconomic and technological--for which it's has been widely criticized in the past. But how one couches its "populist" appeal, and to what audience, is kinda tricky: Investors want to hear about customer diversity; those customers, on the other hand, may aspire to something with more cachet.

Don't get me wrong. I think he may have described some users. But if he thinks that sums up *all* users, he would be very mistaken.

Take me for instance, I come from one of the most "happening" places in California, I drive a nice car, live in a nice apartment (because I was smart enough to see the great mortgage crisis coming), make what many would say is a more than decent salary from my white collar job. And I know hundred of people just like me in SL. We aren't all coming from oppressed countries or whatever. I just think his statement was in some ways derogatory toward his userbase.

Honestly, nothing. I can't imagine that a new CEO is going to come in and shake, rattle, and roll in his/her first few months.
Really? Now, I would think a new CEO would be charged with taking the company public in 18 months or so, market permitting. That would necessitate some pretty swift moves.

If I were the (un)lucky gal, here's what I would try to do:

1. Adjust corporate culture. Retire love machine and correlate bonuses with achievement. Try to focus company on "Improving things" rather than being relentlessly positive. Reward employees who notice problems and make suggestions for fixing them.

2. Improve grid stability. Develop more nuanced measurements of both "Uptime" (quantify access to grid services) and "active resident". Plan and invest money in improving resident access to services. Do post mortems at the executive level of successful new feature rollouts (Havok4) and unsuccessful ones.

3. Create modest but tangible success with corporations. I have my own vision for this, involving satellite subgrids for collaborative ventures. This, or any other meaningful corporate partnership program, probably involves capital investment and hiring people.

4. Lead the effort to standardize interoperability between grids. OWN this. This is a great way to solidify a role as the virtual community by which others are measured.

Yeah, those are great, but in 2 months? Not gonna happen. I could see the groundwork taking place, but I wouldn't think that the CEO will want to step on toes too much. He doesn't want to hear "But Phil used to do it THIS way..." too often.

They're rare enough as it is. Are we going to have to start breeding Lindens in captivity again?

Dang it, it's inbreeding that's the cause of the problems!

That, and parasitic infestations.

VERY derogatory, in my opinion. I do have time on my hands due to 5 back surgeries and disability that forced me to retire from nursing but I am by no means, uneducated, oppressed or here because I have nothing better to do. If thats how he regards the userbase, then hrmmm...how can people who are in such financial and political straits afford to pay his prices for sims and such? Maybe if we are a 'Wal-Mart' population you should look into discounting tier Mr. Rosedale.

That the paragraph about big cities was not in quotes in the published version tells me that it was probably a typical interview, with the bits put into the article bearing little resemblance to the whole of what he said.

I guess now I know why I've not heard anything on my resume ;-)

(I kid!)

They'd be lucky to get you Marianne, dear.

Looks like the Love Machine will survive just fine.

Yes, perhaps it was taken out of context. Still I can't imagine a context where it would mean anything but what it seems to mean.

You're all going to feel damn silly if it's revealed that I'm the new CEO.

Fractious. I have to say, it's accurate LOL. More accurate than the statement today.

No idea what they_will_ do.

Would be nice if they sat at home, with no Lindens around to influence them, make a non-Linden avatar and spend at least 90 days using SL like the rest of us do.

for all we know, they might be

"fractious user base" came from Adam Reuters, not Philip.

I would think that saying "But Phil used to do it THIS way..." too many times (or even once) to a new CEO would be a fast track to a pink slip in most corporate cultures.

Allow a 30 day free trial, like most other MMORPGs, then charge after that.

Hope not, but that sounds "about right"

In quotes, it was:

"Bad weather, oppressive regimes, poor economic conditions — that’s what makes an SL user.”

Yeah, we all know where we stand now.

I wonder if he will finally post to his blog with a "I didn't mean that" post?
Meh, likely not. He is so far removed from the user experience now I am amazed it took him this long to outright talk crap about us.

I'd love to see the rest of that paragraph and the line of conversation that got there.

Sort of like Obama's references to gun-toting bluecollar fundamentalists
