New CEO in weeks?

I've been checking Reuters daily, thinking that LL should get a new CEO in place before the June hi-tech press doldrums hit. It would be great timing, giving a new CEO some "honeymoon" press, and then 3 months of less attention while s/he changes things around.

http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/04/21/new-linden-ceo-could-be-named-within-weeks/

So, my question: given a new CEO appears before June 15, what do you think they will do in their first few months?

Allow a 30 day free trial, like most other MMORPGs, then charge after that.

Say "no more shinies... fix that dog" to the LL staff.

Layoff 20% of the workforce. Some management positions will be eliminated as well but with the 4thQ restructuring, most of those will be back in a different rolle. Usually with a higher salary, signing bonus and keep the severance package they received earlier.

/me has been through a few mergers / CEO changes before.

They're rare enough as it is. Are we going to have to start breeding Lindens in captivity again?

"We’re profitable. We have the luxury of waiting (for people to own better computer etc.) ....Linden Lab, whose backers include Benchmark Capital and Omidyar Network, does not disclose its revenues."

Building it on the backs of people paying absurd prices for land....IMO as long as 'real estate" is the primarily, big money "game" in SL, all the scams of RL, economy, which destroys RL economy, and creates the Rich/Poor divide, will control SL as well.

No idea what they_will_ do.

Would be nice if they sat at home, with no Lindens around to influence them, make a non-Linden avatar and spend at least 90 days using SL like the rest of us do.

I guess now I know why I've not heard anything on my resume ;-)

(I kid!)

That should be a prerequisite, not just for the CEO, but every LL employee.

Do you mean before or after it takes them a week to get off Orientation Island? :)

“The only thing that SL users have in common is that they have a lot of time.”

"Users in big cities such as New York or Los Angeles were least likely to spend time in Second Life, not only because they were busy but because they had less need to escape to an alternative, anonymous world," he said.

So in other words SL is a place for hick losers with lots of time on their hands and big interests taking advantage of them? Nice PR Rosedale. "Their world, your warped imagination, your Wal-Mart, Taco-Bell or welfare/disability/unemployment/minimum wage paycheck"

Dunno about this. Part of the reason why they want a new CEO is to grow the company - not the grid, the employee base - more quickly.

In my experience, the CEO change that occurs in a startup around 300 employees tends to focus more on moving key employees to smaller roles where their key expertise can be learned by newer folks, than getting rid of them. Although certainly there will be casualties, perhaps more than one at the executive level.

I imagine they will stock up on pens, a nice stapler, and a big box of paperclips to bend into interesting shapes. Oh, and some rubber bands can be fun too.

“Bad weather, oppressive regimes, poor economic conditions — that’s what makes an SL user.”

Ohhhkay... That shows just how much Philip is out of touch with his own creation.

I read it and thought .... Well on that basis there's going to be grillions of SL Users!

Yes, so SL in their view, between the lines is a great flytrap to gather as many losers together as possible, to skim off their few dollars using the ploy of playing with their dreams. Nice Utopianism said the Spider to the fly.

Honestly, nothing. I can't imagine that a new CEO is going to come in and shake, rattle, and roll in his/her first few months. S/he'll probably still be reading the health insurance booklet, taking tours, meeting employees, flying to Europe to meet those employees, having meetings with capitalists, etc.

Oh, and sending that sequined codpiece to the dry cleaner.

I thought that's what Philip wanted to do himself, after he got a CEO to run the place for him?

“You have to wait out the PC retirement cycle,” said Rosedale, who plans to step down as CEO to concentrate on product development and strategy.

So if Philip is going to concentrate on product development and strategy I don't think we will see any urgency in fixing what is messed up. He will call the shots in that respect, new CEO or not. I think we can expect more of the same.. new shinies and a trail of destruction.

Worked for Sam Walton.

In fact, I'd be seriously worried if SL were the exclusive club of the elite--both socioeconomic and technological--for which it's has been widely criticized in the past. But how one couches its "populist" appeal, and to what audience, is kinda tricky: Investors want to hear about customer diversity; those customers, on the other hand, may aspire to something with more cachet.

It will be "the exclusive club for the elite, (and scammer mercenaries)" to milk the non-elite. What else is new?
