One of my friends on here has a guy telling her that he can see her IP Address. She started another Avi just to get away from him, but is worried that if she goes back to her first name, he will be able to get it and do whatever he maybe able to do after that. Please help if anyone knows this answer. I'd like to know this myself to try and find a way to block it from happening to me.

If you start a media stream (music, web page) or if you click an object that opens a URL your avatar can be linked to your IP by the owner of these services.

My guess is this guy is just spouting hot air in an effort to intimidate people.

There is a roundabout way, if he manages the server that provides the music stream for the parcel and if you have your music playing then the IP address will show on the music server. However, connecting the IP address to specific avatars in SL would be something of a challenge I think.

In this case I would recommend just muting the guy and either just ignore him or go somewhere else. SL is a big place.

Every so often you get one of those asshats. "I can find out where you live, ooohhh".

I tell them to come on over, I'm not doing much besides cleaning my shotgun.

You mean the actual services itself or renter of the service.. Because I had rented a stream and I only got how many people were on it not IP addresses, maybe I just don't know... I really don't care about the IPs myself but I'd like to know how you get those.

He can't see her IP address. Period. You'd have to have Linden-level access and even then I'm not entirely certain all of them have such capabilities.

Whoever this guy is just an Internet tough guy. If she wants to mess with him, call his bluff and watch him fall on his face. He'll probably spout some empty threat and teleport away since he knows damn well there isn't anything meaningful he can do. If he does try anything else just mute and/or AR him.

Your IP Address =/ your street address. There isn't much you can do with an IP address. You can ban the IP address from a website or game, and I guess LL can do it with SL and these forums. They can find your ISP and possibly a rough location, but even that isn't reliable. The last time I stayed in a hotel, my IP from my room resolved to Georgia, and I was in Washington, 3500 miles away.

Plus, IP's can be spoofed very easily, so someone doing that can't be traced or banned by their IP at all.

If you run your own music url, they can see IPs connected, ppls never believe that.
It's not rocket science, noticing ppls connecting as they join in listening or teleport in w/ play streaming or are given a url and connect.

This...or tell them, come on over Brenda is not doing much, other than cleaning her shotgun.

I do not even know Brenda and the latter always works for me.

If you look at someone's web tab and their url is on a page they host or includes an image on a page they host I think they can get your IP from that. I think that would be true for web pages displayed on prims as well.

Same thing for images in the forum posts or signatures, if you have images turned on here, anyone who wants to can get your IP by hosting an image that's posted here, assuming the image gets displayed on your browser.

"host" meaning you have a static IP, not dynamic on your home computer functioning as a server and not using a hosting service or third part upload site though.

I am not sure what you mean by the second. If you host an image here, you would get a list of IP hits to your site without being able to tell which belonged to who wouldn't you ?

Despite our recent duct tapping dog, wanna be kidnapper run a muck SL user,
most ppls are bluffing and hone right into ppls fears.
They flex a good game on the keyboards, but are almost always full of um poo irl.
Tell your friend to buck up and blow that person off and enjoy their reg account.
If they get msged have them say "And?" and "whatever!" and *Mute* and AR where as applied ...a firewall helps.

It really is. When you do it, is like a scary, yet thrilling sensation, because Brenda might really be in the other room and you just don't know it...in moments she might call you from her cell and tell you....and you would be like omg, Brenda is in the other room ! and then, then...

I have read these forums for too long I think.

Had thought about the details of it. They could send you a PM with an image in it. If you read the message with images turned on, they get your IP. They can tell if you are online here, and what thread you are looking at, at http://forums.secondlife.com/online.php .

There's some kind of brouhaha about something like this going on a third party SL related forum, which is what brings it to mind.

Back in the old days the IP and username of everyone that posted in the wiki ( the old wiki, not the current one) was included in every wiki post, edit, etc.

Is that a 12 gauge in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Dynamic IP addresses don't change all that often, so it is possible for someone to host at home and get IP addresses that way. And depending on the hosting service, you may or may not get logs of connections from them. So I'm not really sure what your point is.

The IP/location lookups are often a few miles out, but doing a traceroute on the IP can sometimes reveal the exact town as part of the domain in one or more of the final hops. That's the case with my cable connection. Given some of the psychos out there this is a little too close for comfort!

Can confirm that. Last time I looked it shows up in the server stats as Mozilla.
