is this for second life photos or real life photos?
Oh I see, clever way to get people to come to your sim. All the photocontest I see is a bunch of female avatar faces photos. What contest.. who is prettier... If you see any real honest to god contest for photographers (rl) let me know.... |

It says win 'up to L$100,000'. That definition would encompass a prize of L$1, wouldn't it?
Anyway, I'm off to take a look to see what it's all about. _____________________

usually 1L to vote and those who enter, end up paying an entry fee, AND paying others to vote for them sad indeed There is a very great variety in how they are run, the rules and what is charged for. Many are free to enter, many are free to vote. The ones that are pay to vote you can pay what you like mostly, sometimes there is a minimum charge to vote. How do I know? I create and sell such contest systems in large nubmers I might add considering the price and as part of my support program I know exactly who has ever bought what system and generally know from helping them how they are running them. These contests are insanely popular because it brings people to together socially and gives them a common talking point. It gives the clubs that use them a new source of revenue and people come to frequent their clubs. New friends are made and old acquaintances are renewed. All whilst voting, waiting to vote or looking to see how others are doing. Popularity contests have been "popular" since the dawn of people, there is nothing wrong with them if it is out in the open, transparent and on show. It gives people something to do and people love to compete. The popularity contests that are problematic are the ones behind closed doors, of which few know the rules and you can never be sure of how you stand. That is what people confuse with the bit of fun that people are having here. |

You are very wrong indeed in your assessment of these contests, and I might say extremely judgemental when you seem to know so little about them. The popularity contests that are problematic are the ones behind closed doors, of which few know the rules and you can never be sure of how you stand. That is what people confuse with the bit of fun that people are having here. well the ones I have seen (and I have seen at least 10 different ones, from friends asking me to vote for them) are.... I pay to vote, minimum 1L but can pay more to up their rank, and they told me they had to pay to enter, usually 500L so judgmental, yes, as I can only judge on the ones I have seen are they yours, no idea, as I had no idea you made them if yours are free to enter, and free to vote, then good for you not sure why you even felt the need to attack me though, as I did nothing more than anyone else in this thread and that was voice my opinion (on a spam thread no less) (and no less judgmental than you are of me, and you know so little about me. And don't even claim to think you know me, based on what you have seen in the forums, and/or SL) _____________________

People do it because they wish to, it is part of being a social thing. People are having fun and you call them sad, each to their own I say and I suggest you attend to your own business and leave others to theirs. |

The popularity contests that are problematic are the ones behind closed doors, of which few know the rules and you can never be sure of how you stand. That is what people confuse with the bit of fun that people are having here. I have really only seen a few of these, one was a 'designer's contest' I was invited to join, I forget the entry fee but it was $10L per vote 'and get all your friends to vote for you!!' which pretty much gave me a jaded view of this type of contest. (I didn't join it) I think that like everything else, someone has a good idea and creates a fun thing to do like you have described, and there are people out there who will find a way to exploit it for their own benefit...and those who run across them under those circumstances would tend to see them all in a bad light, for that, I apologize. It's sort of like legitimate advertisers getting plunked into the same pile as adfarmers, I guess. I didn't mean to cast aspersions on any contests done for fun, and not done to line the contest givers pockets. _____________________

Let's see now. The OP posts an obvious advertisement for a contest and the next 9 replies are either chiding or derogatory in some fashion. Then Rha posts her somewhat chiding or dergotatory comment and we get a couple posters jump all over her.............so should one think that maybe there is a little picking going on in her direction?
I would say so. And for my comment on the original topic. It's not only in the wrong forum but photo contests are a dime a dozen in SL. They are generally a small group of "contest raiders" that go around to all the contests, enter, vote for themselves with a dozen alts, get all their friends to get all their alts to vote and, more often than not, run away with the loot. The contest boards, no matter how configurable they are contribute heavily to this type of scam.......so, I'm not impressed by the poster here who makes them. |

It's sort of like legitimate advertisers getting plunked into the same pile as adfarmers, I guess. I didn't mean to cast aspersions on any contests done for fun, and not done to line the contest givers pockets. Why do people want to pay for it? Some come to an arrangement with the people who have entered to get a cut of the money they win, for some L$10 is a small price to show their friends they care about them enough to help them win, there are many reasons but the only thing that matters is that they are willing to do so for their own reasons. It is also unfair to call out the club owners for doing this, they provide a venue, prizes for the winners, the contest provides everyone with something to talk about, hence the social aspect I alluded to earlier. It fills clubs etc. There is nothing wrong with them charging money to vote. It is mostly a small amount per person anyway, the same amount that would go in a tip jar for being in a venue. Why do people like the contests? They want to win money, or they want to be the most popular, the most glamorous, the most XXXXX. The drive to be that for 10 seconds is enough to make some people go to extraordinary lengths. Why else do people take part in beauty pagaents or any contest in SL or RL that is based upon other people's opinion of you? Hell, we even choose our leaders in this fashion. Some people like them and some people don't. I think those who like them should be able to engage in them without others calling them "sad indeed" though. |
