This was happening very regularily from about mid-August (JIRA has my comment dated 25/08/2007) but has calmed down considerably using a combination of:

Second Life Release 1.8.3 (5)
Nicholaz Edition BE-r
Nvidia v163.69 for Vista 32-bit (dated 18/09/2007)

e6600 Core2
2x8600GTS

I don't know how or why it has anything to do with it, but I got the freezing up constantly when moving the camera. I have a outdated PC 3GHz P4HT, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6800 GS 256MB VRAM... anyway the screen freezes were driving me up the wall when panning around, I couldn't hardly get anything accomplished when building, so I tried something.. I forget why I tried it, but it seems to work. In client preferences the freezing happened a lot when I had the VRAM set to 256MB, to utilize the entire memory capacity of my graphics card. I set that setting one step down to 128MB and the client freezes when panning became nearly non-existant. I also noticed a slight improvement when moving around in crowded areas, my frame-rates don't seem to dip nearly as low anymore.

When I return the setting to 256MB, the freezes and pauses, sputters and stutters, etc.. all come back and become unbearable. Returning the setting back to 128MB once again fixes nearly all of it.

Like I said, I don't know how or why it works that way, but it seems to fix it for me for the most part. Perhaps it can help others out willing to try it, at least it's worth a try.

WOOT ! Solution found (for me anyway): I downloaded the latest bleeding edge Nicholaz viewer BE-s from
http://www.blueflash.cc/users/nicholaz/BleedingEdge/.
I also upgraded to the latest Nvidia drivers, 163.71. Then I went to one of the laggiest places on the grid (which shall remain nameless) and tried to freeze up the client. I could not freeze it up. The Nicholaz client would pause at times when I violently swiveled in mouselook but never completely froze up. C'est un miracle !

Same exact thing used to happen to me on my laptop, but not on my PC, exact same client version but different video cards, the laptop had a video card over specs, and the desktop under specs, go figure, I ended up putting a 256 meg card in my laptop now all is better..

I would say its a compatibility issue with the installed cleint and the video card your using

Steve (aka Satori) where did you find the new Nvidia drivers? My latest is from Nov 2006; are there more recent ones out there for Windows XP?

If you are from a country other than the USA, you can find the correct link very easily on that page. :) Hope that helps.

I have only rarely had this problem but suddenly it's happening all the time. I think it's ridiculous to think "oh, I better swivel slowly or I'll freeze" every time I try to move my camera. This is a very new problem that has started happening to me and it began about the same time I started having problems with my a/o that I mentioned in another thread. Nothing changed on my pc.

I don't want to have to switch to the Nicholaz Viewer. I actually like the communications window.

Same here since a while back. And has been like that in the last 2-3 updatesfor me. So you're not alone for sure.

Yep. And it's a crapshoot. Sometimes it doesn't come back.

Happens for me since way before Voice
I tend to think it happens while changing the LOD of lots of prims, as once the viewer unfreezes I notice LOD has changed on many prims

Come on folks you all know this is a user problem and is no way related to the Second Life platform. Just clear your cache and update your drivers and all will be fine.

Well, like Egon, I'm ATI graphics here. I checked out the Jira, two months of comments, even Nicholaz and a Linden but no vote so I assume you're being sarcastic Susie?

edit: Sorry Susie, selective blindness missed the smiley LOL

Yeah, never used to crash after my first 3 weeks here, hardly ever freeze too. then when 1.18.3.+ came along it happens all the time.

Actually its not happening now, but may be because my super dupa fast spec mac blew up on Saturday and now I'm using world war 1 technology to connet to SL, now when I turn, I click the left or right arrows, go make a cuppa tea, and by the time I get back I might be facing the right direction.

I had to set up a old powermac G3 with just SL on it for me to even get into SL. Now if a lot of people try SL with something similar to my current set up, god only knows why they stay!
