From: Windsweptgold Wopat I do not use an alternate viewer but a few friends do. I was rather surprised when someone i had only just met started telling me that i was a premium member, that i had L$ they could tell where i was ( i do not have it that they can TP to me ) I have to wonder why would anyone need to know i am a premium member or that i have L$? Seems many of these new viewers have things one can live without out *shrug* One mans spam is another man's very important special offers. Emerald has a LOT of features, and they don't get in the way. Some people like to know if the person who just tp'd into their shop is the type to spend, or cause trouble and the built in radar in Emerald gives you a quick at a glance indication of that. I can only think of one thing offhand that Emerald doesn't do, that another viewer does--and it's something most people don't know about and can't use anyway. (Projections in Boy Lane's Shadow Viewer) It's also very stable. I can't remember the last time it crashed on me. From: TundraFire Nightfire You don't need an alternate viewer for avatar info like premium membership and location. Your profile says whether or not you have payment info on file. That usually means you're a premium member, and if you are, you probably have a few Ls. You can find avatar's names now on the mini map and TP over by using the world map. True. But with the emerald viewer, one click brings up a list of everyone around me with a lot of information such as how old they are and what they are doing and how close they are. A double click of a name inside my draw distance puts my camera there, and another click will tp me right to them. And the one click tp works even if they're outside of my draw distance.

Count me as another Emerald fan, especially the Optimized version for newer computers. Its rock solid.
My main criteria is how good the viewer is for filming and on my computer the Emerald look is richer and films better.
I donate when I use an alternate viewer btw. I want to support those who take the time to make our SL better.
Disclaimer: I have no connection with anyone who makes Emerald except to bother them when I ask a question on their forum.

I did download it and like it very much. Don't want to jinx myself but I stayed inworld for 4 hours last night without the Nvidia 'Driver stopped responding and has recovered' crash. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Emerald viewer. I was wondering about the radar, I haven't tried that yet, but I've been using the Mysti radar; is there a way to turn off Mysti radar, without getting rid of the whole Mysti HUD? I still like many of the Mysti tools that are on that HUD. Do you all use those arrows on the Emerald screen for movement, and for camera, or still use your keyboard's arrows?

i downloaded it last night myself..i actually decided to try the optimized viewer..my system is border line old..It still runs better than the Regular SL viewer.. It was getting to where i couldn't be on the ground in a lot of places i loved to go..even at my new home in costa ricca estates i had to stay above the clouds.. So it's nice to be able to move around a lot easier now on the ground i love all the goodies too and the extras on the build tools

From: Clarissa Lowell Windsweptgold: Really? People can map you, see if you have money and what level of membership you have, with certain viewers? Not sure I like that either, at least the first two things. It's an exaggeration. "Can map you" is a standard feature in 1.23, you can hover over minimap dots and see who is there. Some viewers, like Emerald, have a slightly fancier version of this, it shows the same names in list form. You can press a button and draw a beacon to them. The tracking only works in mini map range, so it's really nothing sinister. The same feature can show if the resident has payment info on file, used, etc., it's nothing more than the same information that is in the profile. It doesn't tell you if the other avatar actually has money, that information isn't available (some users may be confused on that point because a dollar sign is used for the payment info icon).

Yes, you can turn off the radar in the MystiTool menu. I think it's "av scan". I tried Emerald last night. This thing ROCKS.

It was easy, Sable, even for me; no WAY are you more tech challenged than I am.......Everything came over, pretty much as I had it set in preferences, except I had to reset my home point. It logged me in, the first time, at my last location, but that was no bother. Just went home and reset the log in location. And remember, you don't have to delete/remove your current SL viewer. Just leave it there for a security blanket, so you know you can go right back to it if something happens with Emerald.

From: sable Valentine @ Treasure, Thank you for the reassurance. Over the past several months i've used several third party viewers including Kirsten, Coolview, Rainbow, Cool SL View, Snowglobe. Until last night I was a Snowglobe fan ....UNTIL I downloaded and tested Emerald. Very very nice. I have no issues recommending it. Some of the other barebones viewers have an increased FPS rate and faster rezzing but the slight decrease in speed (for me anyways) with Emerald is worth all the toys and functionality (to many to list). I can't speak from experience (yet) on stability having only used it one day BUT from all of the above comments it sounds like this is a no-brainer decision! I still don't know what alot of the "emerald" settings mean in the Preferences so if there is a nice link explaining the implications of checking off or on any of these settings it would be nice. see you all in world!

I'd like a little users manual for Emerald, too. Especially how to use the encrypted IM features.
Three of the coolest bits so far: - see who is looking at you (the little camera targeting crosses come with names attached) - The "Visit This Location" button on the login screen. Go see some of those intriguing places! - The Worn tab in inventory

I very much like the TP to avatar feature on the radar. I use that a lot. And the particle beams, of course.. I can play with those for hours.

From: Lindal Kidd I'd like a little users manual for Emerald, too. Especially how to use the encrypted IM features. Best I can tell, the only thing this will buy you is that the IM text will be encrypted when you send it. If the person you are talking to is also using Emerald with the OTR enabled then what they send you will be encrypted across the network. If both of you using the OTR, you can also use the 'validate' function that will supposedly help verify that who you think you are talking to really is that person -- however, best I could tell from testing, all it will do is verify that I am talking to avatar-x, which I already knew -- it cannot really validate who is at the keyboard. Also, if you save your logs, your IMs are not encrypted there. From: Lindal Kidd see who is looking at you (the little camera targeting crosses come with names attached) As an Emerald user, I can set my prefs to NOT broadcast this info and then you will not see my name with the cross-hairs I like the 'double-click autopilot' (double click a spot and automatically walk there) and the double-click TP (double click a spot and TP there).

The IM encryption thing is really there to keep Lindens and operators of other grids from peering into your conversations.

Just downloaded and installed Emerald yesterday. I was online for about three hours or so. Seemed to handle itself well on my computer, although I wasn't one who had a huge number of problems with the default LL viewer. Overall, it did seem quicker and I do like its features, although it was lacking in documentation for many of them.

I've been working on a User's Manual, but its a long way from being done: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User%27s_Manualhttps://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User%27s_ManualAnyone who knows enough is welcome to add a "Differences" page for alternate viewers, that's something I had planned, but not got that far, just doing the official viewer is enough work for now.

Are their any builders that use Emerald? I work with itty bitty camming of prims, I need good control and no disappearing prims or other fun stuff some bugs have caused. Just curious on builders opinions.
