At SLCC, I saw Snowglobe in action, during a couple of presentations. It seemed crashy and there were plenty of 'Ooops' and 'relogs' as the typist recovered after multiple crashing.

How is Emerald better than the SL viewers? Or, is it? Where do you get it if you want to try it?

Snowglobe crash rates are a known problem that is being looked at.

Emerald has extra features that are not available in the regular viewer. It is stable and I have been using it exclusively for a few months now.

*I third that... Emerald is by far the best viewer now, i was a huge Nicholas fan, but the support they provide with Emerald can't be beat. Has issue? Send them message, they has fix asap! LL should take lessons :)

Actually, I think we'll have a better chance of winning the lottery than figuring out the information from the Lindens.

Curious about the Emerald Viewer and all the features?

Ok, am sold and will install it tonight, give it a try. One question, I read the info pages, and regarding 'Voice' it says "I wouldn't touch this if I were you". What does that mean? Does the viewer support voice?

I actually love SnowGlobe and still use it sometimes. I do however use the Emerald viewer the most these days because of all the extra features built right in. A friend of mine even commented that he has managed to eliminate a few HUDs cuz of some built in Emerald features.

It does support voice and I've had no problems using voice on it. The "don't touch this" comment in the online info refers to an option in the extra preferences Emerald gives. It looks as though you have the option to change which voice server you connect to, so unless you have the name of an alternate voice server I guess any change you make will break voice.

It does, you will need to install the 'proprietary' files also. There are two files to install but is easy and right now- two options as to which emerald you use. Same, just one is supposedly faster but old machines cannot handle it, it says on their website.

I've had pretty good luck with Snowglobe...no crashing, anyway. But it has a problem with textures. Sometimes, a texture pulled from inventory, or passed by a friend, won't open on the screen at all.

I did forget one of my big reasons for going back to SnowGlobe sometimes. If I am doing something where I want to snap lots of pics quickly - therefore using the 'Ctrl ~' shortcut, I use snowglobe cuz the Emerald viewer, like LL's latest, cuts off part of the pic when doing that.

I am NOT computer savvy. So, my question is can you have more than 1 viewer on your computer? I just have LL's "viewer" and have read comments on this or that viewer but leery of installing one simply because I don't want to screw up anything.

You can have every viewer that's out installed. I have 6 - 3 versions from Linden Lab, and 3 alternate viewers. They all work fine with living on the same computer.

Treasure, just try it.

It is the kind of thing where "you think you know, but have know idea".

Emerald is just dreamy.

I don't know if I'd go that far, Bri. ;)

But I've been using Emerald for the past few days and am very happy with it.

For the non-computer-savvy, it is just as easy to set up as the main viewer, but it does require two steps since the proprietary stuff (like voice) can't be in the same download file as the rest of the stuff because of licenses. So you download/install the viewer, then download and install the other file. Easy-peasy. :)

Thanks, Jerboa, and Amara for this, cause, this is the kind of thing (like Sable) that I REALLY need to know. lol "Things to know before you go".

Yeah, I am sort of a viewer whore, maintaining many versions of many different viewers. I even install each LL version in a different folder so that updates do not overlay them and I can easily revert back. I currently have 15 viewers installed, 4 of which are LL viewers.

I just downloaded the Emerald Viewer, and I really like it. There are a couple of HUDs I won't be needing now because of all the additional features. Very nice viewer!

Back up your chat and IM log archives though, before you install alternatives.

Pep (I have heard stories of them being wiped.)

It wasn't Emerald's fault - other than I was so happy with it- figured I didn't need the others again... my SLife - poof! :(

I wasn't worried about the IM or chat logs, but I was a bit uneasy when it cleared my cache when I logged on.

No need to be, its just getting rid of the old and making a new one. The same thing LL tell you to do 99% of the time when you ask for support, even if it has nothing to do with it.

I do not use an alternate viewer but a few friends do. I was rather surprised when someone i had only just met started telling me that i was a premium member, that i had L$ they could tell where i was ( i do not have it that they can TP to me ) I have to wonder why would anyone need to know i am a premium member or that i have L$? Seems many of these new viewers have things one can live without out

Windsweptgold: Really? People can map you, see if you have money and what level of membership you have, with certain viewers? Not sure I like that either, at least the first two things.

You don't need an alternate viewer for avatar info like premium membership and location. Your profile says whether or not you have payment info on file. That usually means you're a premium member, and if you are, you probably have a few Ls. You can find avatar's names now on the mini map and TP over by using the world map.
