Out of curiosity I looked myself up on Google and there's over a page of references! They include my Flickr album and stuff I've put on SL profiles plus one or two mentions of me made by other people. No problem, I always like being in the limelight , but I was surprised how much could be found out. I looked up some of my acquaintances and some of them had lots of entries too.

I get daily reports from Google on my SL name and Store name, so I can keep track of what people are saying about me. Vain perhaps, but Information is Power. There are a lot of things that Google picks up, blog posts, blog comments, even forum threads. And of course SL's New search is opened up to the internet as well, so can be and is indexed by search engines. I'm proud to say my RL name get's nary a single hit. But my SL name, 3 pages or more.

From: Conifer Dada Out of curiosity I looked myself up on Google and there's over a page of references! I Google my RL stuff regularly. The less I get, the better. So far, I get a big fat *zilch*. I love it. Google my old pen name, "Ghosty Twofish" (with the quotes), and get 88,300 results. Not too shabby. "Ghosty Kips" only gets 177 results. Well, I'm just getting started.

A page and half for my SL name. My RL name came up with 10 pages but absolutely none of it was for me, but all other people with my name -- and that is exactly how I want that search to be.

I do every now and then when I get bored enough . The weirdest result by far is still http://center.spoke.com/info/p8lJpJB/KittyBarnett which claims I've worked for LL since 2006 .

Well, saying one has 'a page', '10 pages' et cetera of results is meaningless because no one knows how many results per page you're set to have. Two pages beats 10 if my two pages have 100 results each, and your ten pages have ten results apeice.
How many total results? That's the real measure.

Only one accurate hit for my RL name, and a gazillion for my SL name. Just the way I like it. It is so hard to maintain privacy in RL any more, that it takes a lot of effort to succeed.

My RL name is a couple hits about stunningly boring things I have done and that's it. Trout Recreant has some interesting stuff, though. I've been blogged! Yay me. That makes me famous, right?
Actually, it turns out I'm pretty boring.

I never did it before, but when doing it just now I yielded a couple if expected work related hits for my real name, for my SL name, 2 SLU threads, a bunch of not me stuff, and this: http://www.wordsofpassion.com/novel1.htm

Amusing. Googled "Ceera Murakami" and got 6 pages of links. Pretty much all actually related to things I had posted or people who were citing me as a reference source. A few from a gaming forum where I use the same name, and from a technical forum where I use the same name. No false hits, that I could tell, though some of it was dated...
Whereas in the first 6 pages of results for my RL name, only two links were actually related to my Player...

There are a couple of people called Flo Moran, but none of them are from my SL. They're just RL people who happen to be called Flo Moran. What a coincidence. Also, I searched my RL name on google and this is just freaky now: Someone has the same, exact name (spelled exactly the same) as me on that facebook site. Oh wow, now that's an even bigger coincidence. Now, if people I know search my name, they'll think I have a facebook account :\
That's just great...oh well, at least he has pictures of himself so they'll quickly see it's not me.

I'll have to remember to try this when I get home. The last time I googled my real life name, there were several results that weren't workplace friendly, but they probably refer to someone else with my name.
The first time I googled my real name (back in the early pre-IPO days of Google), I found someone with my name that was also in grad school in the same major as me, working on a related thesis to the one I was supposed to be doing, at a university very close to one that I almost went to. And his webpage had a very similar sense of humor to mine. It was kinda freaky.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. (but I'd sell the naming rights to my RL for the right price)

What is scarey to me is the google maps. In my area they have photographs of the streets (not google earth, these are actual photos), you can see into my neighbors window from their picture.... I do not like that at all. Sure the street corners or lights is a good idea, but 360 degree and down the street you can zoom. I am not happy and have written a few letters. Check it out see if your street is on there...
