Before going through all that....please try to uninstall Quicktime fully...restart pc....install latest version of quicktime direct from thier site...then reinstall SL.
More then likely the install of the Easyshare prog installed an older version of Quicktime wothout even bothering to check if you were on the most up to date one...thus making SL inoperable.

Would a quicktime problem keep you from getting to the login page?
There's no "before doing all that", it's all done, including uninstalling quicktime.
I have now tried the login command switch, which if I remember correctly is -login firstname lastname password , and am still getting the same result.

yes. Also the other clue to this is in the earlier post by you. You point out that the Easy share prog had gradients...this is also another issue caused by old version/incompatible quicktime versions causing undesirable effects on photo viewing software...been there done that

Also maybe take a look at the graphics card manufacturer's control panel, to make sure EasyShare didn't "help" with some of those settings.

*huggles her Cannon camera* No software needed for it and thus, it doesn't screw up my windows. That's my job alone, thank you very much.
Suezanne, you'd be amazed at what SL is buried in program-wise. Seriously outdated video drivers will cause not only visual 'glitches' but you won't be able to upload either. So, it wouldn't surprise me if an older version of Quicktime would cause you to be unable to login to SL.

That occurs a lot for me.. I use one work arround..
I don't remember correctly where (i am in office, cant check) but go to the directory application data/users and find a folder called Second Life.. rename it to other name (to not loose chat logs).. when starting SL it will act as the first time you logged and a new directory will be created..
There are some config files in it that and i think it got messed sometmes.. i rename the whole directory just couse im lazy to find wich file is corrupted..

I'd ended up with both quicktime and quicktime alternative installed. The uninstall for both of these hung up, with no error messages, requiring stopping the programs through task manager.
I ran the Gleary registry repair utility, and then installed quicktime alternative, and rebooted. I spent hours from the time I started the EasyShare installation until finally ending up with no EasyShare and the same quicktime alternativeI had to start with. I think there is some value to the EasyShare software, but it was pretty aggravating, and forcing qt updates pretty much makes it undesirable to me.
Second Life will now run again.
I am not getting logged out with proper speed now, though, when I try to log in after logging out I get the "Login failed. The system is logging you out ...." message, but that presumably is a problem on LL's end of things.
I think that the Avast antivirus program is adding some delay to the SL start process that my former antivirus AVG did not. The little A on the Avast icon in the system tray rotates a lot more than I'd like it to. I don't find the options I'd like to find in Avast for what to scan and when. I also don't find an option to not use the rotation effect. I don't want animated icons, just scan the thing invisibly unless a virus is found, please.
I read a report from someone saying that their Canon camera was a better video camera than the Flip.
Thanks for the advice re quicktime.

recently had many freezing issues esp. when flying . I ran virus scans search services ansd closed everything non-essential, de-fragged, the whole route.... still the problem still continued. Re-loaded sl clent, still frozen within minutes of log-on. Then I reloaded older client viewer from here http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/03/the-new-viewer-a-well-oiled-machine/. Still some lag on flying but hella better here . Btw did you add secondlife.com to the trusted list in Advast?
