Ive discovered quite a few inventory items have vanished.
Ive tried the cache business without luck. Im wondering how many other people lost inventory stuff whether they got their items back and whether the items were returned on their own or whether people had to submit a ticket as I did today.
Im also wondering if submitting the ticket did any good and whether Lindens techs managed to do anything.

By 'cache business,' do you mean clearing it, perhaps several times, or have you tried deleting the entire folder? C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Application Data\SecondLife

C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Application Data\SecondLife I assumed the instructions meant to clear my cache through the edit menu which I did... was this incorrect ?

Not incorrect, no, but sometimes a single cache clear isn't sufficient. Doing it several times may bring back your missing items, but deleting the folder I mentioned is a quicker way to remove the entire cache and have it rebuild.
Um, but did you mean Preferences, instead of edit menu?

It would also help if you could be a bit more specific on what actually happened . Different symptoms will have different things to try. "It was there last time I looked, but now it's gone", or "The folder is empty, and all of my other folders are empty too", or "I had it rezzed it, got it returned but it never came back", or "I'm getting 'Missing from database", etc. (A good way to see if you're gaining inventory between 'clear cache and relog' sessions is to write down the number of items after they're finished fetching. If it keeps increasing between relogs - and you're not adding to your inventory yourself - then it's worth to keep on going. If it's always the same number between relogs then at least you'll know. Try different sims too, sims like Hahne which are SF-based full water sims can make a difference)

Delete teh whole folder ..
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\SecondLife
Usually has up to 8 or more folders in that SecondLife folder group.
you will have to set up all your preferences again .. ..
I select all the folders but .. user_settings ..
this usually does teh trick .. and still keeps all your preffs ..
If that does'nt work .. Delete teh lot.
P.S. to teh last post .. Delete the whole "Secondlife" Folder ..
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\ "SecondLife"
but see above to maybe save your user_settings.

Patience counts for a lot in SL ... If you have cleared your cache to reset your inventory, if you sit still in a quiet sim, it can take about half an hour to reload 6000 items. If you have 12,000 items I'm guessing an hour plus. Also the inventory load can stall so it doesn't say "fetching" anymore, but you don't have your expected item count. Just wait a couple of minutes to let the cache sort itself out. Then log out, wait a couple of minutes, re-login, and type something in the search field again to kick off the inventory load again. It should eventually find the missing items, though again this can easily take over 10 minutes. In theory you might have to do the log out and relog trick a few times if you have thousands of items and the inventory load keeps stalling.
Well it works for me anyway.

Also still interested in the answer to Kitty's question (post # 6). There are many varieties of inventory loss.
And Ann is right, pull out any logs you want to a completely unrelated folder and delete the entire SecondLife folder in Application Data. You also may want to delete as much as you can out of C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp. Then uninstall, reboot, and reinstall SL.
Curiosity question: are you seeing packet loss when you are in the normal SL places you hang out in?

Yes, I noticed I was missing about 6k items a few days ago. Logged off, cleared cache, deleted the Second Life folder from my Application Data folder in my Documents and Settings folder, uninstalled SL, reinstalled SL, rebooted, defragged, cleandisked, spybotted, adawared, rebooted again, and finally sent in a support ticket when none of that worked. The support ticket was replied to with a form letter with instructions telling me to do what I'd already done. Some of the items came back a day later, but I'm specifically missing a huge folder full of thousands of skin demos. L$1 isn't much of an expenditure for one set of skin demos, but when you buy hundreds or thousands of skin demos and use them for work purposes (fashion blogging, matching makeup to specific clothing items, reviews, etc.) it adds up. My next move is to contact Kona Linden directly and hope for the best.

I lost the folder where I keep all my vendors and sales-related stuff in my inventory. Fortunately I was able to recover the important stuff by pulling the items out of of my vendors. It was a close call.

If you rez or buy things when you are getting packet loss, you may get inventory loss or not receive the item. Is your network bandwidth set high? (Edit/preferences/network/bandwidth). You can just play with the slider ... the change takes place immediately .. until your red bar turns green The theory is that you want to set it a bit lower than your actual link download speed (if you are using broadband, you can measure this with one of the tools here http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest).

Thanks for the suggestion, but tried that too. No effect, nor did turning all graphics options way down. As I posted in the "slowdown" thread ..... it's just a whole range of new problems I've been having recently. Almost glad to hear I'm not the only one ETA: I'm not seeing any inventory loss BTW, apart from a landmark to my home which I lose on a regular basis.

I'm not sure what counts as a slow enough for a big red bar, but I do know that the connection from the UK means you get a big red bar fairly often no matter what you do with any of the bandwidth settings. And afaik, it shouldn't matter, the internet and SL are both supposed to be able to cope with missing, requesting and resending packets. So basically it slows things down, but shouldn't be a cause for inventory loss.
