If, by some chance, this bill gets passed, it will almost certainly be thrown out in the courts. Getting that law declared unconstitutional should be, as we say in the business, "so easy I could phone it in."
That is, of course, an exaggeration, an attorney would be expected to work hard and argue the case based on the very many precedents. Earlier, Viktoria posted a link to a news story about the CBLDF victory over the Internet Censorship Law in SC. This was decided by a Federal District Court, the same court that would consider the bill we are discussing. I have no doubt that the 4th circuit would also consider the law unconstitutional.

From: Kraelen Redgrave What is wrong with kids using content filtering these days? Many online games and forums have optional profanity filters. Perhaps a better law would be to enforce the use of said filters for minors. What's so hard about proper parenting and not stuffing little billy into a padded cocoon of 'for the children' knee jerk reactions... After all we do that the poor kid will die of a heart attack as soon as he hits that mystical magical age of 18 and is suddenly ripped from the protection and made to see all the stuff that his parents hid from him. Far better to parent and not hide the world from the kid, actually help them learn and understand what's out there.

From: Ee Maculate Don't people have better things to do with their time? Some have other things to do that are just as bad or even worse. In my city we are having a special election this week to determine if all local government business should be conducted only in English - that is, no forms or signs translated into other languages (even though they now currently are translated). This has nothing to do with language - it is open rudeness toward a growing immigrant population in our area (some may be illegal immigrants yes, but not all). The election itself is costing us 350 thousand tax dollars. I'm going to grab the popcorn and see what happens. If it passes I will fully expect all the officious swaggering redneck creeps in office, including policemen, to use correct English grammar from now on, and I will be monitoring their statements with great interest. To bring this back around to SL somehow - how wonderful that this on line community gets along as well as it does and for the most part overcomes cultural differences.

Wow. Just wow. I guess South Carolina no longer wishes to be a part of the United States. OK by me if we just let 'em go. Anyone else object? Either that, or a bunch of legislators have decided they'd rather not keep their jobs. About all I can think to say is this: http://scifigeeks.net/sounds/7-words.wavAnyway, there's no way such a law would ever hold up in court. Five years in jail for saying the wrong word. Please.

I just talked to a contact I have on the staff in the SC legislature. She said that the bill was very unlikely to be reported out of committee and will likely simply die due to lack of support. It was introduced as a feel-good measure by one person in a very conservative district who only wants to claim credit for introducing it.
That is just one person's opinion, but she is well connected; it is probably correct.

Mary Much like the various game laws Jack Thompson helped with... they wound up getting to teh floor and voted on because of the 'for the children' brigade. None wanted to be on record as voting against such a measure

It's really a non issue. That same idiot has been submitting that same bill every year he as been in office and every year it is eimmediately rejected by commitee.
Any idiot rep can submit any stupid thing they want, it doesn't mean it'll become law or ever will.
And yet he keeps getting reelected...

I live in South Carolina. With the vast amount of religious groups here, i don't see anything standing in it's way from passing(but i could be wrong. i am new to SC). I don't swear in public my self so I should be safe lol. I was in the store the other day and this girl was on her cell phone saying "F" this and "F" that and "F" that mother"F"er, just as loud as she could and didn't care about any ones kids and families standing right there. Some people just dont have manners and lol. I moved from Oklahoma and currently on their books it is illegal To Swear in front of Women and children, which has been a law for a long time. There has been many rock bands who have been hauled off to jail and hit with some pretty stiff fines for swearing during their concerts. People in the nearby neighborhood could hear them so someone complained I guess. I dunno, the law doesn't bother me. Manners should be used in public I think and, think about others around us. I guess that's why I run PG venues lol.. Some politician probly got stuck at a stop light and his kids were forced to listen to some nasty gangsta rap .. and said. WE NEED LAWS! lol'
EDIT: One band that was hauled off and fined in Oklahoma made up the fines by selling T-shirts that said "Tulsa police Suck!" In the front and back. Those T's were a number 1 seller lol'

Don't be fooled thinking this can't be passed. yesterday a city managment in the netherland readopted a general local ordament making it iligal to curse inside their city limits, funny thing is that this same thing was revoked last year becasue it can't be upheld the christian parties wanted it back for symbolic reasons. there are at least 3 more cities in the netherlands with simular rules all in our bible belt.
obviusly nobody cares and the police don't have the time to do anything with those rules.

I gotta have somewhere to move back to so I can get outta southeast TN. Let's keep Greenville, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach. Georgia can have the rest. !
