Hey Guys, Ever since I joined second life, i've yearned for a place to play with other musicians casually. Actually play, not just virtual sounds. I usually play over voice chat.
So my idea is to create an island made specifically for musicians to get together and jam. If there isn't one already, I think it would be a great new addition to SL and bring in alot of new subscribers.
If you too share my vision, contact whoever it is that can get this done and encourage it!

This is really not possible at the moment. Can you imagine the delays involved? A 250ms delay on a single guitar in the studio might sound awesome.
Now imagine a whole second or more between each musician and then try to sync over the WWW and "get it together" in SL ?

yeah i see your point. But what about somewhere to meet up and take turns playing? you know, like a jam circle? No problems with that. maybe some celebs might even show up and jam, and you wouldn't even know it!
anyway I think it would be great. tell me what you think guys

It Cannot work unless you all show up in the same house.
Thinkabout it . You would all have to play to a click track and even then it would have to be mixed down and streamed to SL as a single stream.
With the current technology it can't possibly work.
Sad but true.
If you mean play a single stream (Mixed vocal and guitar/keys) then yes it would work.

Good luck!.

yes it has been established that playing simultaneously over voice chat would not work, too much lag. but musicians could take turns playing over voice chat easily and effectively. the sound quality is pretty good, i've tried it. I don't have the knowledge of how things work as far as new lands, but I just think it would be a cool thing to try.

From: Emi Connaught It Cannot work unless you all show up in the same house. Not true. You can use NinJam. Virtual Live Band use it to great effect. I've not been able to get NinJam to work for me but there's plenty of folks out there using it. http://www.ninjam.com/And don't even think about jamming using SL voice. Been there, done that and got the t-shirt. Interesting as a possible quickie one-off gimmick but definitely not for serious work.

There is also eJamming, which is in beta and free while in beta. For the collaboration to be heard by others on the sim besides the musicians, it would still take someone to capture the collaboration and feed it to a server, which could feed it to the sim, but then the musicians collaborating would need to just listen via their software collaboration and not in SL as the time delay would be a killer I bet. Lofty goal, albeit an interesting one...

I may have missunderstood. The OP might wish for people with an already mixed stream to collaborate in a "list" of performances.

Sure I could send a click to somone in Taiwan and they could add a bass or percussion track and email it back to me.
I could add guitar and vocal and email it to the US.
Eventually we would end up with a composition.
then what?
Could this ever be conceived "live" online with the technology we have?
Not this year.

OK.
If I play a note on any instrument . NOW
You have to either be in the same building to react (jam)
lag is a factor to be taken into account wether transatlantic telephone or internet ?
Satelites may be cool but there is a delay.

Alright. To reiterate, I think it would cool if there was an island designated for people who play instruments together. For example:
A group of people sitting around a fire, all with voice chat. One person plays something, a song or a riff or whatever, and people say what they think. Next person plays, people critique him, etc...
I know there are hangout spots, but I'm talking about a spot designated specifically for musicians. got me?

It would also be a fun place for those non musically-inclined folk to just hang out and listen to some music

Reid we do it all the time search Open mic.. now we all use shoutcast servers not voice voice is 8bit mono ...YUCK! and yes you can do jams two ways in real time. 1st is NinJam, although this adds a measure of music for each musician to hear so real time is a measure delayed as each musician plays (if I have understood it right) 2nd and what I have done as well as many of the live musicians in SL (Max and Chronic) is to piggyback the stream. here is a real time (ok theres a 1-15 second delay before the listener hears it but thats with any streaming media) say I play my guitar do chords and sing part 1 the other musician listens to my shoutcast and plays along with me in real time and sings etc. then proceeds to re broadcast using a different shoutcast stream. also check out SLMC forums http://slmc.myfastforum.org/ great info on music in SL (as well as many musicians and venues)

Was'nt this post to help someone. = OP? It might have been if it were accurate but it wasn't. If you want proof, go and check out Virtual Live Band. For those who wanting to learn about playing live in Second Life as a solo performer or as a member of a ninjam act with multiple performers, you can find out quite a bit at http://slmc.myfastforum.org/ Yes, you CAN jam in the SL virtual world with musicians in other places, even other countries. There are five people in Virtual Live Band and they're in at least three different countries. They've been performing in SL for close on two years and it's extraordinary to me that no-one outside of SL music circles has ever heard of them.
