Well i'll help.

To a lot of the questions, my answer is yes, to the rest, the answer is no.

I'll gladly help but I charge for research consultancy. I can accept Paypal, bank transfer or if you wish you can just buy my stuff.

Let me know which of those payment methods you'd like to opt for.

Use Google. Try SL+fashion. or second life + fashion. It is hundreds of blogs about SL fashion. Maybe one of the bloggers will meet you inworld and answer your questions. You can also find my flickr in my signature, but I don't bother to reply. It is new surveys every week.

Perhaps you would answer a question? What is the purpose of this survey. Are you an aspiring designer, are you looking to market to SL users, or is this another "school project".

Those questions lead me to believe that you aren't doing this for an assignment, but to build a business in SL.

If that's the case, you're going about this all wrong.

Resident Answers is not a survey forum. Creating a survey of this nature is like sticking your hand in a bowl of piranha. Only more painful. It doesn't help that many of your questions have already been asked (and answered) in this forum. Your Google-fu must be really weak. The ones that haven't been answered can be answered with a Duh.

No I miss the too small changing booths, the long rows at the counter in busy times and walking through cold and rainy weather from store to store.

From: Coco Karfield
Would you like to dress differently in Real Life? Would you want it to be more like it is in Second Life?

Despite the appearances of the OP, I'll answer, only because I'm a fashion whore. Answers in CAPS:

- Do you buy clothes in SL?
YES

- How important is dress/appearance to you?
VERY

- Does your appearance in Second Life resemble your appearence in Real Life?
SOMEWHAT.

- Do you dress differently in Second Life? To what extent and why?
IT'S EASIER TO WEAR MUCH MORE EXTRAVAGANT ATTIRE IN SL THAN RL.

- Does Second Life offer you more possibilities in dressing yourself?
YES. IT'S EASIER TO AFFORD PERIOD PIECES AND EXTRAVAGANCE.

- Is it more fun in Second Life?
NOT NECESSARILY MORE FUN BUT EASIER. SOMETIMES MORE FUN.

- Would you like to dress differently in Real Life? Would you want it to be more like it is in Second Life?
IF I HAD THE FINANCIAL BACKING, YES, I WOULD WEAR MORE OF WHAT I DO IN SL, BUT IN RL.

- Dou you modify your dress for different occasions, as for example:
* Working? Shopping?
SOMETIMES. I WILL WEAR SHIRTSLEEVES AND A WAISTCOAT WHEN WORKING RATHER THAN A COMPLETE ENSEMBLE. SHOPPING -- NO.

* Partying?
NOT REALLY. I COME AS I AM AND I'M USUALLY ATTIRED NICELY.

* Sporting?
WHAT? GREEDY GREEDY, GOLF, BOATING, QUIDDITCH... WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?

* Spare time/Occasions with no specific purpose?
YOU DON'T GET OUT MUCH, DO YOU?

- Does your appearance cope with who you are?
I'VE NEVER ASKED IT.

- Do you have a distinct style or do you try out all sorts of things?
YES. READ MY BLOG: http://www.sge-sl.com/elric_anatine/

- In SL, are there subcultures, certain groups that are recognizable by their style of clothes?
WHAT DO YOU THINK? OF COURSE THERE ARE.

- To what extent is imitation of dress important? And differentiation?
I REALLY THINK YOU NEED TO WORK ON YOUR QUESTIONS.

Hi guys,

I'm doing some research on fashion and the way people dress in Second Life. I was wondering if you would like to help me, and answer some of my questions.

Mostly I make my clothes but I do buy other fashion items (shoes skins hair etc)

- How important is dress/appearance to you?
Very, I like my av to look good, clothes to match the shoes etc

- Does your appearance in Second Life resemble your appearence in Real Life?
If you turn back the hands of time to when I was young and slender :)

- Do you dress differently in Second Life? To what extent and why?
Personally, I like to wear mostly just ordinary things, but I know some love the fantasy clothes, it takes all kinds in SL!

- Does Second Life offer you more possibilities in dressing yourself?
Yes, I can afford designer gowns in SL :D

- Is it more fun in Second Life?
fashionwise, yes.

- Would you like to dress differently in Real Life? Would you want it to be more like it is in Second Life?
If I could turn back time hehe

- Dou you modify your dress for different occasions, as for example:
* Working? Shopping? Yes
* Partying? Yes
* Sporting? Yes
* Spare time/Occasions with no specific purpose? Yes
I change my clothes every time I go anywhere.

- Does your appearance cope with who you are?
I'm not sure I understand the question.

- Do you have a distinct style or do you try out all sorts of things?
Yes my style is 'ordinary' mostly :) Ordinary and 'biker' but not the kind of biker that would have gotten a train pulled on me IRL haha

- In SL, are there subcultures, certain groups that are recognizable by their style of clothes? of course

- To what extent is imitation of dress important? And differentiation?
Live and let live, I don't care what others wear, only what I wear. Well I care what the shoppers who like 'ordinary' clothes wear :D

If you're a student on a school project, get your ass inworld and find out what people wear. Just head to a club and you'll figure it out pretty quick.

If you're an aspiring clothing maker who wants to start a business, you're surveying the wrong people.

Here's what I did to start my clothing shop: I made stuff I wanted to wear, put some of it out for sale and advertised it, and sold some stuff. Not rocket science, surely.

Best of luck.

I think if you'd bothered to read the questions, you would have noticed that that's not what's being asked. I imagine some could be helpful to strategic business planning, but the questions certainly don't seem the sort of questions that a beginning clothes designer would ask. Nor are they the sort of questions that could be answered merely by observing what people wear in world.

Oh good lord . . .

Talk about getting a skewed view of how people dress in SL!

Bored enough to answer this.

- Do you buy clothes in SL?
I bought a pair of boots once.
- How important is dress/appearance to you?
It isn't. I change things on suggestion and will wear what someone wants to see me in.
- Does your appearance in Second Life resemble your appearence in Real Life
A fair bit.
- Do you dress differently in Second Life? To what extent and why?
In both I tend to be a T-shirt and jeans sort of person.
- Does Second Life offer you more possibilities in dressing yourself?
The tattoos come off in Second Life.
- Is it more fun in Second Life?
The getting dressed or being undressed part?
- Would you like to dress differently in Real Life? Would you want it to be more like it is in Second Life?
Nope, don't care about my appearance, only dress up when it is expected of me for an occasion or work.
- Dou you modify your dress for different occasions, as for example:
* Working?
If I am hosting an event ... yeah I am expected to be in the theme I set. ... I do tend to base the theme on what I am wearing though ... but don't tell anyone. When doing security, I don't change.
Shopping?
This one boggles my mind.
* Partying?
Despite it being a popularity contest, I will get into theme IF I have the items. I will not get them just for the event. (Okay, once I did go and get an nun's habit.)
* Sporting?
I wore a life jacket when kayaking ... it was free when I clicked on the craft.
* Spare time/Occasions with no specific purpose?
Nope.
- Does your appearance cope with who you are?
Do you mean reflect? I guess it does display my apathy.
- Do you have a distinct style or do you try out all sorts of things?
It depends on whether I am making a new AV and in a changing mood or not. As said before, normally in T-shirt and jeans.
- In SL, are there subcultures, certain groups that are recognizable by their style of clothes?
I know of a security group that have a uniform. Yeah, sort of. The conformist Barbie dolls do all tend to look a like.
- To what extent is imitation of dress important? And differentiation?
Not important at all. I wouldn't care one way or another. Jeans and a T-shirt means no items to adjust i.e. prims. It is a lazy way to be.

- Does your appearance cope with who you are?
In Second Life, yes. In real life it's the other way around.

- To what extent is imitation of dress important? And differentiation?
I did a long list of snarky answers to the entire survey. Now that I feel better, there is no need for me to be rude and post them. This last question deserves a serious answer however. It's something I haven't considered before.

We are all just pixels. Our personalities shine through the pixels, but really there are only so many combinations of shapes and skins one can have. From a distance, I have to admit a lot of people look alike. I even have a little trouble keeping some of our long time forum regulars apart in my mind - especially the redheads, Mo, Lindal, Lil, and several others. (I do know the difference, ladies. I just have to stop and think about it for a second.)

So, yes of course differentiation of dress is vital. More often than not it is fashion taste rather than physical appearance that identifies a person to me. It becomes even more important with the ability to change skins or hair color at the drop of a hat.

I know I shouldn't encourage these people, but what the hell.

- Do you buy clothes in SL?
Yes

- How important is dress/appearance to you?
Playing with different looks is a big part of what keeps me in SL

- Does your appearance in Second Life resemble your appearence in Real Life?
Hardly ever

- Do you dress differently in Second Life?
Usually

- To what extent and why?
Often *very* differently.
You really haven't seen much of SL, have you? Put simply, because I can wear clothes as casual, skimpy, elaborate, bizarre, formal, non-existant or fetishy as I like, almost anywhere I like, without having to worry about the price, discomfort, weather or chance of being arrested.

- Does Second Life offer you more possibilities in dressing yourself?
I refer you to my previous answer

- Is it more fun in Second Life?
Yup

- Would you like to dress differently in Real Life? Would you want it to be more like it is in Second Life?
Yes and yes... assuming I looked as good

- Dou you modify your dress for different occasions, as for example:
* Working? Shopping? ...sometimes
* Partying? ...usually
* Sporting? ...there are sports?
* Spare time/Occasions with no specific purpose? ...occasionally

- Does your appearance cope with who you are?
You might want to rephrase that question. In English perhaps.

- Do you have a distinct style or do you try out all sorts of things?
All sorts

- In SL, are there subcultures, certain groups that are recognizable by their style of clothes?
Yes

- To what extent is imitation of dress important?
Imitation how? Designers imitating RL styles? Brands? Fabrics? It's important for me that clothes look real, but generally I don't want RL designer logos on my clothes.

And differentiation?
Again, not sure what you mean.

Well, what WAS being asked?

She didn't say WHY she wanted to know these things. Do you think you know? Sredni's assumption that she wants to start a business is a fair one. It passed through my mind as well.

I'm the one with a .45 on her hip.

Seriously, though, Weston, you have a point here. My partner Cindi looks a lot like me (or more truthfully, I look a lot like her...she gave me some help tweaking my shape). When we dress alike and wear the same skin and hair, we pass for identical twins.

I mean, if *I* have trouble telling us apart when we're all cuddled up together, it's no wonder that other people do.

Part of this is the limitations of SL. The avatar mesh, and the fact that many people wear the same skins and hair. Part is, I think, that there is very often a likeness among beautiful women. We all work towards some common zeitgeist ideal of beauty, and end up looking like each other. You can see extremes of this in chorus lines, for example. Women who are both beautiful AND unique are very rare.

I think I'm going to start wearing green hair more often.

But is that a knee-jerk reaction to all surveys concerning SL commerce? Or is there something about the questions there that seem like the sort of questions a new store owner would ask? Why would someone thinking of opening a business in SL ask if people dress the same as they do in RL? Obviously some do, some don't, but it really doesn't give direction on what to make.
