I always love your way of thinking. When can you organize this?

I'll make a few calls.

I can see someone innocently TP'ing to my place, going inside, because I am lax about locking the doors, and even walking into a room when I'm in it. But when he stands there, ignoring my greetings or requests to leave, as has happened, it becomes Eject, Eject, Eject.

I sell and install a security system that is designed to only protect the inside of a house.. not outside the house... leaving the land outside and the air above the house freely open.

I totally disagree with this. How ever is a new resident, who's just teleported to the mainland for the first time and signed up because he/she heard about the groovy thing called Second Life where the content is all user created and you can explore and do all kids of stuff, supposed to know where they are and aren't allowed to go? The only clue they get is a forest of banlines and security orb warnings -- how welcoming and fascinating! Unlike RL, there are no roads so that they can cruise through neighborhoods to look without tresapassing. There are no signs telling them where they can and cannot go. There are no gated areas with sentries checking admittance. How ever is anybody to distinguish what is "ok" and what isn't?

...meanwhile, anyone wanting to stalk another person can just cam into your house and take snapshots without your even knowing. There is no privacy in SL and anyone thinking that ban lines or security orbs will give them privacy is deluding theirself. Get real here guys!

Personality and common sense?

I do remember stumbling into what I realized much, much later was a private home when I was new, but then only because it was basically an open roofed area next to a Linden road. Other than that I just stuck to Search / Places and by the time I started to randomly wander around I had already learned to tell private from public.

1) There is nothing so uncommon as "common sense."

2) You make assumptions based on the culture you were raised in - SL has a worldwide user base. Nothing is private in SL as long as any one of us can alt-cam right on in.

Some time ago I saw a post here about a security bee Hive. I went there and got it, actually is a good device, it will make everyone unwanted leave in a hurry :) , and don´t send people up in the air, just a hive of wasps chasing them till they leave the limits you set.

And its fun to watch too, you can turn it on just when you need more privacy, or keep it on, people can fly by your land, just can´t stay, have fun :)

But just remember that if everybody used an orb then exploring Second Life would become pointless because we would have to constantly keep moving.

Albert knows!

2k I hate to say it but some people just don't get the point. Locked, doors and blacked out windows are just as enticing to bypass as open doors and windows. I only switch mine full on when I don't want to be disturbed, hell my message says "The owner of this land does not wish to be disturbed at this time, please move along and come back later.", I also have it set to switch off when I am not home.

lol! I love the thought of watching people flee while insects dive bomb them! I'm going to have to check that out, May not buy it, but I'm dying to see what it looks like!

Some people have an odd notion of privacy - demanding an absolute privacy not even available in RL or declaring htere is none at all. You think the FBI can't "cam" in your house if it really wants to - and bug your phone and open your mail and in generaol carry on worse than any peeping tom in SL can? Get real about your notion of privacy - at least come up with a version of it that can exist!

In fact, privacy is relative. You can have more or less of it, even if you cannot have perfection. Locked doors and tinted windows convey a clear message to anyone civilized enough to have a computer, no matter what their culture. Most people, in my experience, respect them. That gives some privacy. Skyboxes cut down on the number of would-be visitors too. That gives a certain measure of privacy as well. Alas, not enough. So, ban lines and security orbs, and such. They add a greater measure of privacy. I suppose private, unlisted islands are as good as it gets, but obviously are not within everyone's budget.

There are a number of JIRA proposals that could do a lot to further enhance SL privacy, and people should vote for them. Go to SVC-241 and vote for it, and consider all the privacy proposals linked to it as well (it is a meta-proposal, rounding up the related JIRAs), and vote for them.

Privacy in SL can't be perfect, but it can be better. Just like in RL.

I bought a security orb from Zor Zeddmore, but unfortunately it kept hassling my legitimate neighbours. Fortunately, they were nice enough not to get angry with me :)

The "support group" for it appears to be non-existent - when I posted a message to it I got an automated response saying no one else was on the group, and IMs and notecards to the creator have gone unanswered, so I guess he's moved on from SL.

I replaced it with an Omega one, and that works a treat. Their customer support seems good too.

I hate ban lines - I don't mind people flying over my property or even walking through it, I just don't want them coming into the house uninvited. I have a 30 second warning, so people will only get ejected if they outstay that time - and 30 secs is plenty of time to walk through or fly over my little patch of land.

I hate them too. Absolutely will not use them. I was flying around today, checking out some land in other areas, and ran into a few security orbs which gave you 60 seconds, and had very nice warning messages. Quite polite in fact. I had landmarked those plots, so maybe I should take another flight around and purposely fly into those areas again to see what brand orb they were. 60 seconds, would be pretty good, because my bedroom is on the second floor, and I assume someone would most likely take that long to get up there, spending some time on the ground floor poking around before they realized there was a 2nd floor. And, it is the 2nd floor, which concerns me the most.

Ok, I've been one of those people who really hasn't wanted to protect my property. No ban lines, no orbs, nada.

But lately, for some reason, I've had a flurry of people flying into my property for no apparent reason. I've been living here for months, and never saw a single soul land anywhere near here by accident. Now, they are landing like fleas.

Still, I'm patient. Even the other day, when some newbie kept walking around my land. She said she was having trouble TP'ing, so I was patient with her, but she kept coming back, so I began to be suspect.

Tonight was the final straw. I'm in the bedroom, with "He Who Will Not Be Named In the Forum" (even though half of you know who it is). Just hanging out, talking (get your dirty minds out of the gutter). Some skeleton looking guy walks in, nonchalently and stands in front of us. Just stands there. Looking.

I tell the guy, "GET OUT". But, of course, he does not. He probably thinks he's about to get a free show.

I say to said HWWNBNITF, in private IM "WTF?" He didn't even notice the guy there, he was so deep into talking to me. I'm like, there is some skeleton looking guy standing right over the bed! Leave it to us women, to notice when there is a creepy guy in the bedroom that doesn't belong there!

He quickly ejects and bans him.

Ok fine, that takes care of that.

But the jerk IM's me and wants to know, why we ejected him! Duh! I'm like, you walked into our bedroom! He says "oh, I did it by mistake!" I'm like "no, you don't walk into people's bedrooms "by mistake"; that was on purpose. You had to walk up a flight of stairs and walk through and OPEN door and clearly saw us laying in bed!" Etc. I enjoyed a little bit of a shake down with him.

Anyway, I've decided, enough is enough. No more unknowns walking in on me. I'm not looking for something to harm people, just something to gently tap them on the shoulder and say "please move on" ;)

Any suggestions?

Get some Drones which shoot blazing rockets which will first burn them with fire then shoot their butts into deep space finsihed off by a ban. Fire stays on them for a good while and bodies are terribly deformed until they re-log again. This is the perfect shoulder tapping item you need.

Works for me.

I've never had a problem with security orbs before but two of my neighbors recently got some that look like black futuristic fighter jets. There's two on each property and they zip all over the place. They stay on their property but I'd rather have spinning signs next door than these annoying things. They are driving me crazy. Of course, they never have to deal with them since they turn them off those very very rare moments they ever log in.

I recommend hippoSECURE by HippoTech. Copiable, and can network together to cover a large area and share access lists. And with incredible support. The last two revisions were because of requests I made to improve the system. And you can define rectangular areas.

Yes, that makes sense. We're not allowed ban lines on Barefoot Beach (it's part of the covenant), for which I'm grateful. The politeness or otherwise is up to the user, of course - my message is very polite making it obvious that it's private property but they're welcome to pass through (or over). The default message is a little brusque, so I changed it :)
