You can find rally cheap land rentals. They are usually mainland and surrounded with poorly made homes and banlines. But if you use a skybox you see none of it. Look for rental boxes sitting on a bare patch of land.

Umm, you get plenty of exercise when you're squatting somewhere and the owner shows up and chases you out with a stick....?

Okay, maybe "benefits" isn't the right word. But still, you meet more people and they aren't ALL carrying sticks, y'know.

so true...

i usually run up against the torch and pitchfork crowd myself...

I'm sorry but I find the idea of squatting - annoying - Personaly I have no need for a sand box...

i, too, am sorry, but there was just SOMEthing about this that stood out and left me laughing...

Just go up in the sky so you are not taking up the sandbox space below for those who are actually building.

Also some sandboxes frown on temp-homes so try and get a feel for the place.

On the one hand, sandbox owners are of course free to make whatever rules they want, so if the sandbox rules say no temporary homes or no sky builds then that should be respected, and if you are asked to take it down you should politely comply.

On the other hand, if it's a BIG sandbox, I really can't see a problem. Check in the about land tab to see how many spare prims there are first. If there's loads (and there usually are in the big places) then even a 108 skybox is not going to make much of a difference to anybody else using it, and who is to say you are not editing it? Just clear up when you go, and leave a tip if you feel a bit guilty.

It's certainly not as annoying as the people who drop hair or jewellery in a sandbox and leave it there when they log out.

I've often rezzed structures in public sandboxes, usuallly less than 200 prims and all things I'd previously built myself. I have no qualms or guilt about doing this as I see it as a perfectly legitimate use of a sandbox. The 15,000 prim limit in sandboxes only seems to get used up when griefers deliberately rezz lots of things.

You could also consider logging into the Beta Grid, and getting your friends to do so too, and rezz the skybox in one of the sandboxes there, which tend to be much less busy and the sweeping seems to be less regular - I had a sky platform above one sandbox on the Beta for several days before it was cleared.

I would upgrade to a premium account, but I'm disabled and therefore unable to afford the monthly fees. Luckily I can afford to buy a few Lindens every so often.

I'm starting to see there are a number of us disabled folks on SL; sometimes we just don't want to talk much about it. Nice to meet you and I'm open to chat anytime. :)

Never underestimate the benefits of remaining homeless. You get out more often and meet more people.

Honestly this is quite true. No one "needs" anything really to enjoy SL. And as for a home, I've gone periods of time without one and would find little special places I'd set a lm to and go there to relax or open boxes, etc. (I've found that the bottom of a Linden ocean is a GREAT place to dress. ;) )

This ^^

There are varying amounts of time among the public sandboxes between the returns. I personally go to sandboxes associated with schools. They generally have very nice sandboxes...I have yet to run into griefers and at least 3 hours before items are returned, if not more.

I rez my Mysti skybox, take it up around 800m or so, put walls around it and build. I've often spent at least 3 hours building. The Mysti skybox with the walls is something like 30 or so prims I think.

So, the opinion I got from the OP was she just wanted a private place to put up a small structure and chat with a few friends. If she went to a nice sandbox with the 8 prim free skybox I have, went up into the air and visited with her friends for a few hours, I honestly don't see the difference.

OP, if you're still reading this and would like the 8 prim home I mentioned, please let me know and I will send you a lm or take you there as well as show you some decent sandboxes.

I know what it's like being disabled and having to watch every penny. At some point perhaps you'll find something in SL that you enjoy where you could earn in-world lindens and not have to use your own money for SL things. It's been a long time since I put any RL money into SL.

Oh, I have had some horrendous experiences trying on clothes and skins on the sea bed. A lone green dot in the middle of the ocean can be a sitting duck for a griefer!

Safe places to change are, IMHO, just about the most difficult facility to find if you don't own land and that was THE reason I bought my first plot (although there are a few around - NCI has changing rooms, and so do some stores).

I agree about the sociability thing though. It's very easy to turn into a bit of a hermit when you have your own place.

There are LOTS of changing rooms places available now. Just saying. :)

Type in 'changing room' you will find several and most are very nicely situated.

The FC hangout also has two different portable changing rooms available on the freebie shelves, that people can rez in sandboxes or whatever.

There are very inexpensive rentals that are available, too, based on the "changing room" design. Generally they're big enough to change in and rent for around $50L a week. I rented one for a while until I decided to own land. I liked the fact I had privacy and could lock the door.

Well I did say, make sure it's okay with the sandbox...

I also recommend using as low prim a setup as possible.

One sandbox I go to, will even take apart builds or return them, if the person isn't there a while, if the place is near prim limit or crowded.

But, other sandboxes are nearly empty at times, and/or may not mind, if the privilege isn't abused. (Prim squatting, i.e. building a house to live in on unoccupied land, isn't the same thing, imo.)

Tundra would you send me the LMs to such places? It would be handy for the future, if someone asks for just such a thing. Thank you in advance.

I'm not advocating squatting; I'm saying taking a low-prim skybox up in a public sandbox to visit with a few friends for an hour or so doesn't seem any difference than me taking my higher-primed Mystibox up to build for the same time frame.

I've often sat and thought about what to build and planned it out...what's the difference. Are there "building police" running amuk now?
