Does this Age Verification actually verify things?

Forgive me, but I'm confused: is age verification now part of the regular client, or is it still in some beta phase?

In terms of age verification - you can now do this via the account page. LL is calling this "in beta", but then LL also call SL "in beta".

The ability to restrict parcels/estates to age verified accounts only is in the RC and Windlight viewers only. However when this is set the restriction takes effect for everyone regardless of which client you are using - those using the regular client and not age verified will get a could not open ageverify.xml (or something like that) error message on attempting to enter such a parcel/estate, whereas those using the RC or windlight client will get a "you need to age verify, go to this web page to do so" (well, something like that) message.

We had a Q&A with the product manager responsible for age verification last week and someone raised that point:

Mmmm, well when LL keep closing the related jira issues as "won't fix" they aren't going to get a lot of feedback!

However, as age verifcation is still in beta, LL aren't yet (as far as I know) deleting or taking other action against adult material on unrestricted land. Whether the height of ban lines is an issue is entirely dependent on what LL's policy on adult material above the ban lines will be.

If they start deleting such material from skyboxes on the basis they are not being protected by the age verification restriction - then it *will* become a major issue.

And don't forget, that any attempt *to* increase the hieght will lead to a backlash from the aviatars who will complain they have to age verify just to fly in SL without hitting ban lines every few yards.

the ban based on age verification has to be 768 meters high

or else its basically useless.

Sounds like they are just using the 50m standard banline block, right?

they will get the reverse of their intended effect if they force people to move their sex stuff to ground level.

Having it all in skyboxes, like now, keeps a LOT of sexual themed stuff out of the eyes of casual SL tourists.

I understand that Havoc 4 implementation will allow builds higher than 750m.

Maybe if it were impossible for a non-age-verified avatar to get to an altitude greater than 750m, then all sorts of access issues would disappear.

It would allow land-owners to have both restricted and non-restricted content on their land.

That would also allow people with PG plots to have adult skyboxes.
Anything above 750 in a PG sim would be classed as M, thus preventing the (age-verified) thought police from intruding with the intention of being shocked.

For the UK - well they will have a complete but out of date copy of the electoral roll (names and addresses) from around 2001 when there was not opt out; an up to date but incomplete copy of the electoral roll (from which 40% of the population have opted out); unless they've been to ones behind all the recent government fiascos over losing data in the post, they will not have national security numbers or driving license numbers (apart from a smattering that they've bought from companies that a few peopleyou may have given these to in the past); they may have passport numbers.

If they have passport numbers they're not getting them from the UK passport office, I've asked about this. I doubt very much whether they have much of the data they are asking for, if they did have this info they wouldn't need full numbers.

I didn't like this idea in concierge beta, but then I could verify with name, address and date of birth. Now that it's being implemented and is pretty damn toothless in assisting land owners, as well as not allowing people to see this info in profiles or use LSL calls for security systems, it seems even more of a silly idea.

I still can't verify with either drivers license or SSn. Maybe I should try putting in some made up stuff to see if it goes through then.

I thought at one time they were going to offer to verify sex as well. Did this get dropped?

Yes, too many people would have tried to verify as "Yes Please".
