From: grid status Viewer 1.23.5 Mandatory Update Available We recently made several changes to the Second Life servers to address a potential security issue. To take advantage of the recent server upgrades and ensure that Second Life functions as you expect, we have released a new version of the Second Life Viewer.
Residents using the Official and Release Candidate versions of the 1.23.4 Viewer are required to update to version 1.23.5. Those of you still using version 1.22.11 will be offered version 1.23.5 as an optional update. If you choose to remain on 1.22.11, you may notice changes in the way notecard editing behaves. If you use a viewer not created by Linden Lab, you may also see changes in the way notecard editing behaves. To avoid any potential confusion caused by these behavioral changes, we strongly recommend that you immediately update to the new 1.23.5 Second Life Viewer.
We apologize for any inconvenience this update may cause. I guess they closed the notecard hole.

God, I hate mandatory updates! I always end up having to use LL's featureless viewer until either CoolSL or Greenlife can catch up! Blech!
And Greenlife *just* released an update to their 1.23.4 viewer.... sheesh!

the "Notecard Hole" was the one that let the NeilLife viewer create transferrable notecards containing no-transfer objects.

Viewer 1.23.5 Mandatory Update Available
10-15-2009 12:37
I like the idea of the "Viewer 1.23.5 Mandatory Update" being "Available".
It sort of raises the possibility of a mandatory update *not* being available.

Times like these make me glad I use an old viewer. It may not be the latest and greatest, but I know what it does and don't worry about surprises.

So I guess this knocks out all of the alternative viewers for a few days. For Emerald its probably a good thing - gives them a chance to fix some of those nasty bugs.
Kind of annoyed that this isn't a real mandatory upgrade. The Zindra Alliance has been pushing for one of those, with good reason, for a while...

From: Argent Stonecutter the "Notecard Hole" was the one that let the NeilLife viewer create transferrable notecards containing no-transfer objects. I thought you could only put full-perms objects into notecards anyway. Clearly I was mistaken, but I know I've frequently had to change the perms on something I'd forgotten in an object's inventory before I've been able to put it into a card.

OK - I would appreciate it if the link to the new mandatory viewer would work on the login screen. (RC) *sigh*

From: Innula Zenovka I thought you could only put full-perms objects into notecards anyway. Apparently that depended on the client cooperating.

Clearly I was mistaken, but I know I've frequently had to change the perms on something I'd forgotten in an object's inventory before I've been able to put it into a card. I think the exploit was to use a modified client to engineer a notecard that had the UUID of a protected object in it. The result was to break the permissions - perhaps on the logic basis of "Well if it's in a notecard it must have full permissions." The object was never "put into" the notecard as one would normally do.

Log-in failed?
10-15-2009 17:14
Never has this happened to me! I installed the "required" SL viewer today and haven't seen SL since! My account can't log-on till such & such a time? ( SL time) Funny...this error was stating a time that was far in the past- not once, but several times! I dropped my premium account because of this crap, and now I think it's about time to say good-bye to SL! Why do they keep messing up something right when it starts to work? Sorry people, I just needed to vent!
