No fly: It's to remind us to crank up the viewing distance and cam-shop from the landing point. :p

Unfortunately that does not work. Many items will not rez until you are physically within 20 or 30 meters.

Shopping by cam in a large store or mall sim is the best way to miss A LOT of things.

Why do so many designers / store owners seem to feel the need to redesign the store layout so often? Is it just that creative instinct that pushes them? I go crazy so often when I go back to a store and all of a sudden cannot find anything. In some cases the new design is really hard to navigate / fly around / cam around, and the store loses my business.

While I am asking questions about store design, what is the reasoning behind not allowing flying in a store? I can maybe understand in some sim settings, but in a store?

Since I am not "in the biz", I may just be missing something. If you are a store owner and redo the layout of your store frequently, I really would like your reasoning.

In most instances other than genuine expansion or adding additional business units...its to compensate in other areas that their business model might be lacking....e.g marketing.
They have this belief that moving things around or updating buildings etc will some how improve sales in the future. It's an illusion!

The same can be said of Malls and changing layouts & builds....as a vendor that rents in such Malls, I have rarely seen an improvement in sales after a re-design.

No fly on a large commerical complex, is just about one of the dumbest things i have come across! In small shops, small parcels (up to 8192sqm) that's fine......but when you see whole Sim that is no fly, that's really just silly! Most people don't have the patience to walk a SIM's worth of shops or mall.....the ones furthest away from main landing point suffer.

I've not run into the 'No Fly Zone' much so far. If the store is huge? Yes, that can be annoying at times. All they'd have to do is post a sign saying 'due to past griefing of our customers, we have been forced to make the premises a NO FLY ZONE. We do regret the inconvenience to all of our customers and hope you understand'.
I tend to avoid stores where the owner posts daft things like that (because that *is* daft), or runs copybot protectors, or sells stuff no-mod for no good reason, because my immediate reaction is "if this person is so clueless/arrogant/obtuse what is their customer support going to be like?".

Especially after a few experiences that reinforced this assumption.

As for me, its mainly while expanding the range of products for sale. The more variations on 1 product, the more it justifies its own department, for example. So I will replace some stuff to make that possible. Eventually most items will have their own department, as the collection grows and grows.

Really rebuilding I do not do anymore, after my last move I got a very nice building from the estate manager, entirely not the style I was used to. But after some modifications to optimize the floor space, I was pretty pleased, and even added a floor.

As for no-fly, that is just weird. My main goal is to make it easy for people to find what they like. So they can fly, walk, or use the teleporters to get around.

Yep, there is one particular outside mall that has no fly...I refuse to tp there.

Since i am a Faun currently, i hoof it :) literally.

I never engage admin flight in a no fly zone unless while attempting to teleport I have fallen through the floor of some build several hundreds of meters in the sky.

I like walking, it increases my immersion and causes me to focus on many things i would normally have over looked. When i get tired of walking, i simply teleport and return to that sim a different time when I am in the mood to walk and explore more. But knowing a sim or store is NO FLY, never stops me from going there....i can after all "hoof it". :D

I keep wanting to come up with some really clever pun about being a fly on the mall/wall... but it's not coming.

I thought it was to remind me to turn my Admin options back on if they had gotten turned off for some reason -- like relogging.

Avanced > View Admin Options > Fly :)
Yes, my Admin options are always on -- so that I fly anywhere as well as for a few other reasons. I just thought I would toss the question out there thinking that maybe on some off chance someone might actually have a good reason for such.

From: Lance Corrimal
there's one reason for "no fly" that i can think of...
store owner lives on the same parcel of land, either the store's on the ground and home is in a skybox, or vice versa... and the store owner doesn't want to get interrupted by customers while having buttsex.
Yeah, but if I really wanted to watch it, there are easy ways around the No Fly option.

I think stores should always have pose stands or other obvious seats at regular intervals around the store (ETD is great this way). That way, folks on low-performance computers can cam-sit their way around a store, even if there's a crowd present. Walking or flying can be painfully slow at times, particularly for the laptop users.

I also think the forums should sponsor an award for the Most Puzzling Store. HPMD is rather puzzling, now that they've expanded. 3D Dimensions also evokes a ponder or two.

Popularity contests.

No thanks.

SL has enough of those + LL's Showcases.

I am totally confused whenever I go to Armidi...and if you are looking for a particular hair at Gurl6, it's impossible without going through each one, I can't figure out a rhyme or reason/pattern to that place :(

About CopyBot protectors: This has probably been asked a million times and I just never paid attention: Why, o why, do experienced SL merchants who simply must know better persist in having these things around? I've stumbled on multiple examples lately, at established and respected stores. I mean, WTF?

There's just no way that these merchants are clueless enough to think it's actually doing anything to CopyBot, and I presume it's not just a talisman to ward-off the Ebil Spirit of CopyBot. Is there some other kind of magical thinking at work, such as the merchant hoping that by invoking the name of CopyBot it will put some fear in would-be content thieves? (I should think quite the opposite.) Or perhaps they hope that in the minds of prospective customers it will bestow some cachet of extra crunchy Intellectual Property goodness on all the wares to be had there? (And that this will somehow outweigh the aura of musty despair they're spamming around the joint?)

Or are they simply completely insane?

(Sorry I missed this reply earlier.) Yes, that's true, and although turning up draw distance may *help*, there are some weird rules I've never understood about how small objects within the draw distance are nonetheless omitted from the interest list (or something like that--anyway, they just don't show up).

But TBH, I very rarely "shop" in any normal meaning of that term. Mostly I just find the coordinates of the thing I want to look at in All search, then try to focus my cam somewhere near where I think that must be on the Map, and hope for the best. Sometimes I end up having to trudge through the store anyway, but I'm not a very patient shopper, so I often trample unrezzed prims and avatars. I figure it adds an invigorating commercial frenzy to other shoppers' experience when I mow them down, but I don't charge for that service. ;)

Some of those things are actually WORN by people.

Others may be coming from a prim with a sensor up to 96m away from you. Might have NOTHING to do with the store.. and everything to do with the paranoid neighbors
