From: Desmond Shang I'll dare an opinion, if I may... First, get rid of the rento boxes. While it's important to show what's available, it's more important to show that you won't look like a ghost town. Lots of empty rento's = sad experience. Got a customer? Show them around personally. Add a rento when they are ready, in a subtle place. Did you know that Caledon uses rento's too? They are in the streetlamps, as addresses - the "RENT ME!!!" instead portrayed as "No. 5" or "No. 13" with a subtle 'Available' written on it if empty (which is rare). Totally changes the mood of a place, if it doesn't look SL-abandoned. Second, start a group for your sim and let the people talk in groupchat. It's a great way to let a community establish itself. Third, if you have empty spots, put some stuff there. Make it fun! Last, show your enthusiasm to all involved. It's infectious, and people will want to be a part of it. It's the dawn of your area, and the best days of your region are soon to come. Great advice as usual. /me runs off to put rento's in his palm trees.

always open to opinions, I personally like having rental boxes, anywhere I go, so that I can see at a glance if there is available space.
I do agree though it gives it a ghost town feel, but for now I will leave them.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli always open to opinions, I personally like having rental boxes, anywhere I go, so that I can see at a glance if there is available space. But Des' idea is really nice - if you put it in streetlamps/lanterns, it would look really cool. It's just a matter of taste.
I do agree though it gives it a ghost town feel, but for now I will leave them. I feel the same way, Rhaorth - I prefer to see what is available instead of having to guess. You could make them more discreet - maybe resize them a little. It is expected that a new place is going to have a lot of rental boxes. FYI, I would never rent any place at 6/wk. 4/wk is still pushing it. Why? Because I always weigh it against the value of owning land outright and yours is significantly higher. And if it's stacked upon another building, you have to share media.

That's why I could never figure out why you kept saying you rent in Caledon, but never could figure out how to rent. You have them hidden. And yes, it doesn't matter that I didn't understand, because you have a wait list piled to the moon, but still . . .. I can't comment on Movix until I can visit it, which will probably not be until Saturday. Looks interesting.

The design and carryout is exquisite - one can see the degree of effort and blood you poured into it - I myself also would not choose to live there - only because I would prefer the wide open vistas and cultivated gentility that a city does not embody. It is excellent work, and as with all art - there are fans and critics. It is a fantastic job, just not one I would choose for me. Now, do let me know if you choose to create a Maxfield Parrish universe...

I think the city is great and even rented a trailer. However, I am a prim hog. I found I didn't have enough prims to decorate like I wanted. But I have that problem everywhere I rent from, lol. It is a wonderfuly designed city though. Love the train.

Have you considered making it an RP sim? Say something Cyberpunk or equally dark to fit the decor? Try getting more businesses in first. Someone on the way to a club would be more inclined to wander the neighborhood. Any time I'm shopping, I examine the stores around where I am. (I find interesting things that way)
Also, are you doing a "first week free"? Many landlords seem to be offering this.

It looks nicely done, but I'm a Vixen who likes trees and open countryside. I personally wouldn't be interested in an urban setting, even for my rented store locations.
Looks like a great place for some kinds of roleplaying, however.

thought about free time or something but not sure what would work best.
as for making it RP, anyone as I mentioned earlier, can RP there, however I will not force it to be RP, that way anyone can feel comfortable coming there.
just be warned ya never know when a gang member might be around the next corner or a bum on the street. hehe
(I mentioned no campers, that doesn't mean that ppl can not come and be bums sitting on the corner, asking for spare change LOL)
I will not kick someone out that does that, unless they go to the point of harassing ppl, but simply sitting there or standing and asking for loose change when someone walks by is ok

Gee, reminds me of Detroit! And, as my grandfather said, "If I owned Hell and Detroit, I'd live in Hell and rent Detroit." Personally, I'd rather live in a tiki hut on the beach.
Still, very cool build.
I think I had a sleazy encounter in that motel. Or was that RL?

Hey, a nice green park would be cool. Another idea: How would you like to have a musical instrument store? I have a lot of low-prim musical instruments I made and distribute for free. I'd be happy to set up a little shop, with all the stuff free or $1 if you like or perhaps $2 and we can split proceeds. I would not be in it for the money, just the fun of it, so I wouldn't pay rent and of course I'd move out any time (or you could nuke it without notice). IM me or post back if you're interested. Maybe I could make an old ethnic av to suit the purpose!

lear that might work, I will im you in game as for a park, who knows what I will do
someone mentioned a carnival type thing so I decided why the heck not, and went ahead and built the carousel and a circular type swing thing.
they came out kinda cute
I was not about to buy them, those carnival ride things are expensive.
wanted to do a ferris wheel, but the physics confuses me, because I think it needs scripting to have the prims react to one another and I am a scriptard.
so if anyone here knows how to make a ferris wheel, or thinks they know a solution to how to make one, please contact me
(the part that I am stuck at, is how to make it spin with the seats following the wheel, but the seats not spin upside down, instead they do like a real ferris wheel seat and stay upright all through the spin)

I went by the other day and found the build to be extremely well done. Have you had any type of event or grand opening of the sim by any chance? Doing maybe themed events a couple of times in the hobo area, letting people see that there is this type of a city out there and that RP is optional. If someone was so inclined they could start an RP group to use the sim as their RP area and start from there. Making it clear that RP is optional, but having a group that feels that is their RP city is a good way to get the place to be 'living.' Again it is a fantastic build! I went through some of the buildings to check out the single room apartments (almost missed the bathrooms lol) and I am impressed with it all Rentals and such are down right now though, it could take a bit of time to get it all up and running. Good luck with it!!

thanks ashlynn as mentioned before some of the stuff is from the free urban blight project stuff, those trashy slum flats with the bathrooms are part of it. from the creator of those I got a lot of tips on how to texture for that type of thing, so been doing a little here little there
the thing I guess I like the most is the train hehe, it is fun to ride the train.
I anxiously await ppl to rent stores so I can shop there too

Was sitting here thinking about it and I think my worry about renting a shop space is that my own clothing and furniture wouldnt fit with the theme of the sim. Are you wanting the stores to do that, maintain the area feel with their items or is it open for any designers and themes? Maybe something that makes sure to mention that (a notecard from the rent box etc) would help in that regard, in case you arent there to answer questions

oh gosh no, anyone can rent as long as they are within SL guidelines (nothing that would be flagged as adult as I will not be flagging it as adult) and no freebies unless it is stated in their store if they are selling freebies, that they are indeed freebies and can be obtained free in other places (I have seen that and I like when ppl do that)
sometimes I buy things that are openly said to be freebies, cuz it saves me the trouble of looking elsewhere for it hehe and I do not feel cheated if they say openly it is a freebie (but will not pay more than 10L for a freebie)

Beautiful Build!! when i saw the pictures i was reminded of the Englewood area off 63rd street where i grew up in Chicago! well one person suggested making it an RP sim. and once You get the traffic, the stores will follow. don't be disheartened!! Keep up the good work!!

Looks cool, though I have my own land, I really like the way the apartments are already postered etc, but 5 prim allowance seems pointless.Hmm perhaps you need some RP'ers to start using it somehow. It would really be cool for those running RP to beable to use places like this for sessions even, perhaps to build traffic for you too

I would have happily rented there if I didn't already have a sizeable chunk of my own land. Back when I was renting I always wanted a more city themed housing area. I've lived in cities the majority of my life and I feel really comfortable in them.
As a former shop owner- I would have wanted a keystone shop before investing in shop space- a store with fairly respectable natural traffic home based or at least with a major outlet in the sim to draw customers to the area. Lots of little shops are nifty- but I could never count on my own brand name drawing in a crowd- so I had to leech off crowds that were already there. Something to reassure me that I'd at least have those first critical 5 seconds with a variety of customers already in a buying mood.
Good idea that I ran into today was a treasure hunt that was being run on the Accessories by Eolande sim. Lots of the shops in the build contributed and they hid 50 freebies around the area and challenged people to find them all. I enjoyed it at the grand opening with the tropical theme, I loved it with todays pirate theme a month or so later. I wound up spending time in all of the shops on the sim and, while I wasn't in a position to purchase today, I spent more time looking for rum bottles in all the different shops than I usually do if I'm just flying through a sim with a keystone shop and I know where to look when I'm in the position to purchase again. If you can get a few smaller shops on board to do a big event with freebies , you'll probably get a big boost to not only your traffic numbers, but also your rentals.
