I just bought a new sim... People are already using it quite a bit...
Any idea how long it takes for Sl to start computing traffic?

one day... each day the traffic shows results for the day before
as for when it will show the first report, your guess is as good as mine traffic is a convoluted mess, and even the lindens can not quite explain it... besides eventually (I hope) it will either be gone, or will be nearly meaningless _____________________

Avatars have a set amount of points given to them. These points get distributed evenly to every parcel they spent more then so many minutes in during the 24 hour cycle. How long they spend in each one has no bearing on the distribution, it is always even. |

If you're unfortunate to be on a sim where traffic is broke then it could be 4 days before you see any changes.

Let's see if I understand what you said: Hypothetically on a certain day I spend 23hrs 30 minutes in SimA and 30 minutes in SimB. Are you saying that both sims will receive equal credit for traffic from my activities on that day? _____________________

Are you saying that both sims will receive equal credit for traffic from my activities on that day? Yes, exactly. EDIT: I'm sure you realize this and just wrote it wrong. But for the benefit of those reading. Sims have no traffic system. Traffic only affects individual parcels. |

Actually, I didn't think of that when I wrote previously... but, yea I guess down inside I did know that. Thanks for the graceful out - very classy of you! _____________________

Yes, exactly. EDIT: I'm sure you realize this and just wrote it wrong. But for the benefit of those reading. Sims have no traffic system. Traffic only affects individual parcels. If that's the case, then what was the point behind the bot farms that were such a pain in everyone's ass? Why not log all those bots on, then log them off instead of leaving them camped out at the bottom of a lake or in a skybox or whatever? It seems that would have had the same effect without the negative ramifications, as long as the bots don't ever leave the parcel, thus splitting their points. _____________________

I have asked the same thing many times, I don't think anyone really has an answer. Maybe they just don't care. Or maybe they don't know how traffic works. Or rather it could just be easier to leave them on, rather then logging them out and back on at strategic times. |

from the wiki
(From Cory Linden at a Town Hall on 12/03/04): Every user gets a set number of traffic points to give out during the 24 hours between midnight and midnight. Any parcel of land that the user spends more than 5 sequential minutes on gets counted as a place that they spent time. [Separate] parcels owned by the resident (or group) are counted as if they were the same parcel. The user's points are then evenly divided between those parcels. So, if I was online for 1 hour and spent 20 minutes on resident A's parcel and 40 minutes on resident B's parcel, resident A would get 33% of my points and resident B would get 66%. Alternately, if I only spent 5 minutes online and spent all of it on resident A's land, she would receive all of my points. Now I dunno if this is how it still works, or not... this is the only formula that can be found about traffic. maybe the reason no one knows exactly how it works, is due to the fact that if we did, MORE ppl would be gaming it.. (again, please note, this is from the wiki, please do not tell me I am incorrect, or such, as this is not my theory, this is from the wiki) KK? Thanks _____________________

To the best of my knowledge, the "points divided by percentage of time over 5 minutes" formula hasn't been true since dwell payments were removed in mid-2006. Traffic has been simply a point per avatar per minute for the last 2 years. That's why keeping bots logged in 24/7 made sense. That wiki article stands as the definitive source, and all kinds of people have referred to it over the years, but sadly it's just wrong.
Someone who actually runs bots and tracks their resulting traffic (paging Phil! ), please feel free to correct me if I'm off base here as regards the most current implementation.edit: OMG I found a corroborating source, an official one even! http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Traffic _____________________

Traffic is a mysterious force which has the potential for much good for many people, unfortunately it has a dark side too. There is much power in the dark side and those who have fallen prey to its temptations resort to war on those who believe in balance. They employ bot armies to combat them with in order to reign supreme and crush all opposition. Be wary of the the dark side of Traffic young sim owner!

If Lindens get rid of traffic...
07-16-2008 20:15
...then they'll kill malls and camping industries with a single stroke. How can I possibly know where to place a store without traffic counts to know how likely it is that my store will be seen? I can map while I'm there to look for bots. Mostly they're easy to find; so I'll know if the mall has bogus traffic.
I pay for camping. It boosts my traffic. I'd stop immediately if traffic was removed. I just don't see the Linden folks doing that. _____________________

Can I give a cautious "Yay!" here? ![]() I'll give a more enthusiastic one. I don't visit malls unless there's absolutely no way around it, and then it's get in, get out ASAP...I don't stroll around to see what else is there. And if I tp into a place with more than a couple of camping spots, I leave immediately. _____________________

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

As does the sim scanner on my neighbours parcel. 80 avatars spending 20 minutes each day generates about 1600 traffic (dwell) points. |

You know, camping isn't all that bad... I think I'm helping newbies with my 3 camping spots. I hope I'm not discouraging people from shopping at my store just by having camping. I would think they'd stay for the quality of the merchandise...
